Five for Friday {July 31, 2009}

...The weekend rolls in, a respite for some from the grind of the week, a start of a new round for others. Mid-summer air hangs heavy and warm, the world like rich cocoa, our nerves often a little frazzled, and yet we know that summer is gift too precious to truly bewail. Embrace this season while it’s still smiling on us with celebrations of gentle beauty and glistening light...

I must thank you everyone who wished my husband and I well over the past week. I’m very happy to report that darling husband is doing a bit better. My health has its good moments and it’s not so wonderful ones, as I have a number of serious chronic illnesses, but I am doing somewhat better than I was last Friday, too, which is terrific – summer weekends are so precious, I don’t want to miss out on more of them than absolutely necessary.

I truly hope that you’re all doing splendidly, and wish you a deeply wonderful, relaxing, sunshine filled weekend!

  4. I'm glad to hear that your husband is dong better. While it can be rewarding to dote on the ones you love, its never fun to worry about them or see them in pain.

On another note, those saddle shoes are amazing and the upside down cake is making my mouth water. I've been meaning to bake lately, but its just been so darned hot!

  5. Wonderful post, as always! I love that Dolce Mia and the saddle shoes! I loved saddle shoes when I was younger. I even found a pair that were a rip off of them in my school colors that I wore a lot in high school :-)

You have a fantabulous weekend!!! get better :-)

  13. Wow! I just loved this post - the text, the pics etc. The packaging of the lotion above is divine. I'd love to see it on my dressing table. And I haven't had pineapple upside down cake in years but now I am craving it. It definitely is a retro dessert, right? I wonder if we could bring it back like cupcakes ;) BTW, I've linked you! Hope you don't mind.

  19. @ Crystal Ball, I think so too! The high heat of summer always makes me crave tropical flavours like pineapple, and this would fit the bill perfectly.

@ Gingeyginge, I think so, too! I want a pair in every colour they offer, but the pink are my absolute faves :D

@ Nora & Lola, thank you, sweet dears! Hop on by my pad in your saddle shoes and I'll whip you up a pineapple upside down cake plus a Jell-o salad, for added 50s kitsch charm :)

@ Kelly Anne, thank you very much for your caring words, honey. (I here you there, my indoor thermostat says it's 33+ right now, I think dinner is going to be something cold tonight - or at least room temp! ;D)

@ Kathie, those shoes sound really cool! My high school colours were yellow and purple, so I doubt they would have worked too well as saddle shoes (lol, the image of such a thing makes me thinking of bowling shoes :P).

@ The Glamorous Housewife, that is awesome! I actually had a pair that were strikingly similar as a child. My grandma bought them for me (possibly from the States) and I wore them until they were almost in tatters. Undoubtedly the best shoes of my childhood! :)

@ Dustjacket Attic, thank you deeply, my dear friend. Your words mean a great deal to me. This blog is such a cathartic outlet for me actually, and I feel really blessed to have both it and my wonderful blogging friends in my life. Thank you again very much.

@ Lizzy, thanks, sweetie! I wish any room in my house was 1/100th as glorious and gorgeous as that one is :D If you don't dig pineapple, you can make that same kind of cake (at least when baked in the oven) with canned peach slices/halves as well. It's really scrumptious that way, too! :)

@ Trains and Sewing Machines, good call! I could certainly see "Baby" wearing these.

@ Keith, thank you so much, my friend. I really appreciate your caring words.

@ Amanda, thank you, sweetie! I think we really need to bring saddle shoes back! I would love to be able to readily find them in shops these days! :)

@ Cait, thank you very much, honey. What lovely scent was the lotion you bought? Right now I'm using an organic lotion that's chai tea flavour, it's so fantastic, rich and spicy, but not overpowering at all. (Thank you again, lots of love to you, too!)

@ ana b., thank you so much, my dear. You're absolutely right, it is a very retro/vintage dessert! Right up there with baked Alaska, Peach Melba, and chiffon cake :) I think you're right, this tasty, easy to make dessert is long overdue for a comeback! (Thank you very much for linking to me, I don't mind in the least, I'm very touched that you did so.)

@ Crystal, thank you very much. I have such a weakness for gorgeous chandeliers, they are like luxurious jewelry for your ceiling, and that one is certainly a gorgeous example of just how amazing these lightening fixtures can be.

@ Thistle Cove Farm, awww, thank you for letting me know I inspired your weekend dessert choice. I bet your cake will be/was amazing! :)

@ Bucca, I do, too, they are such a marvelous and out of the ordinary design touch.

@ Bee and Rose, thank you so much! I'm head-over-heels for those shoes, too! :)

@ GypsyFox, thank you very much, my lovely friend.

Many thanks to you each for your awesome comments. It truly warms my heart to hear from you each.

Have a bright, beautiful week, everyone!
    ♥ Jessica
