August is a bold time of the year - brazen, some might even say. As a general rule, it's summer's last great stance, and indeed, is the final full month of the season. It's hot, fun, and full of rich, captivating, beautiful colours, amongst which gold, blue, dusty brown, and black always spring to mind for me.

They make me think of everything from dips in the lake when it's a sultry 35C at 11pm to evenings spent watching stars pirouette across the heavens to the colours of the sand and sagebrush strew hills that flank our town.

I love August and its intoxicating heat. I use it to nap, to talk walks, to wear my favourite sundresses, and to simply sit quietly and do nothing sometimes, in the great tradition of summers and porches everywhere.

August might feel like it flies by in the blink of an eye, but its rarely rushed and it loves to take the wheel, dictating, happily I might add, how you spend a good chunk of it. Thankfully, most of us so want to soak up every last ounce of sunshine while it’s still here, so that’s rarely a negative thing.

Stores are already starting to make room on their shelves for Halloween decorations and while I adore fall and its wonderful holidays with an unending passion, I am nowhere near getting my rake, plastic pumpkins, or Thanksgiving recipes out of storage yet.

Nope, no siree, no way. Right here, right now, I just want to watch the sun set over Okanagan Lake every night in a captivating, alluring, soulful palette that rather resembles the one featured here in this month's edition of Flickr Favourites. Coincidence? Just between you and I, not in the slightest! :)

  1. I am the same - I use August to wear sundresses, as much as possible before I am back in those winter woollies :/ I love July but by August I can really feel the impending doom of summer's end. Suddenly I am making the most of each day as I feel time running out.

    1. Exactly!!! All the while, feeling more and more pulled towards autumn and its countless beautiful elements and seasonal perks. Still, I'm grateful that summer is here for a while longer and am not shooing it out the door in the slightest.

Thank you for your lovely comment here today and for all of the ones that you've enriched my blog with lately. I truly appreciate them!

      Big hugs,
      ♥ Jessica

  2. Oooh, can we all vote on which of those forties outfits we wish we had in our wardrobe? I vote for the coveralls with the flowers on the pockets! I love to read your musings about nature.

    1. Thank you very much, dear Piper. Yes, ma'am, by all means vote away! It's a tie for me between those overalls and the dark blue ones with the matching jacket - how amazing would that outfit be for those brief, fleeting "between season" days as summer morphs into early fall?

      Wishing you a fantastic weekend!

  3. Sounds like a lovely time of year there, can't believe that Halloween stuff is already appearing! Here in Australia Halloween isn't that big so we won't see any of that until later in October.

    1. It's not getting here fast enough for my Halloween loving tastes, at least in our small town - in fact, the little bit I am aware of on the shelves already, is in the nearby larger city of Kelowna. We should start to get some here around the first week of September though and I'm going to do the rounds and see what gets put out first! :) (I live/breath/eat/sleep Halloween 365 days a year!)

Thank you for your lovely comment, Amber. I hope that you've having a great weekend!

  4. Hooray for August - usually one of my favourite months because it's the most likely to have some summery weather here. It's not doing too badly so far! Hoping for something really warm soon though... If only I had a gold swimsuit - never knew I needed one until I saw that photo ;)

    1. Isn't that sublime? I think the other gal's is silver and they look so amazing together! I'm surprised more of the repro/vintage style clothing companies don't put out metallic mid-century style suits. I could see them selling like hotcakes!

Wishing you a beautiful Sunday and week ahead!

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Kate, that is so wonderfully nice of you to say. Dreaming up colour palettes and/or highlighting fabulous existing ones is a true passion of mine so it always means a lot when someone picks up on as much.

  8. You know, I hadn't thought about it before, but that is really a bewitching color palette that you mention! I've never thought of combining gold, royal blue, black, and brown before, but I think I'd like to give it a try, now that I've seen them all together. You're always giving me new ideas.
I love that second photo - how beautiful is that dress? And there's something so dreamy and thoughtful about her expression, perfect for the mood of summer giving way to fall.

    1. Thank you ever so much, my sweet friend! I adore your use of the word "bewitching" here as I fell that really sums up this palette, and August in general, so very well.

It warms my heart to know that I help to inspire you and hope that I can continue to for a very long time to come. The inspiration is entirely mutual, I should add - I've had the creative juices start flowing many, many times from your wonderful blog.

      Have an awesome week!

  9. Nope, nosirie, no way, not going to give up summer yet! I'm tired of the never ending heat yet I do not want the golden days and freedom to end. That last picture especially is perfect for August, sitting around in bathing suits with friends, relaxing a day away.

  10. Oh, Jess, what a lovely collection. I especially loved the stribed jersey dress, which I could easily find space for in my wardrobe (and believe me, it is full!), and the tic-tac-toe cake. I have to remember that idea. :) I am so glad to hear you are sometimes just doing nothing, which I think is very good for you and which you should make a habbit. I am behind with your blog, I have been busy enjoying life and the lovely summery weather in Denmark. Finally, we have got nice weather, so I have been outside in my garden reading and working on my needlework. No internet, which puts me far behind, but believe me, bad weather will soon be here again and keep inside with my iPad. ;) Wishing you a lovely day, dear. :)

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Sanne. It's great that your'e finally getting some fabulous seasonal weather on your end. Funnily enough, though there have been some mega warm days this summer, we've also had some lackluster weather and a touch more rain than usual, too. Hmmm - strange indeed! Thankfully the last few days have been gloriously pretty (and sunny!), so I'm not complaining in the slightest and hope that the seasonal splendor from Mother Nature will continue for a long time for both of us.

Tons of hugs & happy wishes for this new week,
      ♥ Jessica

    1. It's marvelous that your DH will be taking a breather from work this month. I'm secretly hoping, especially since we've both been working our respective tails off this summer (and whole year in general) that maybe Tony and I could each take at least a couple days off, tack them on a weekend, and get in some much needed R&R come autumn time.

Tons of hugs & happy Monday wishes,

    1. Aren't they flat out awesome? As summer slowly starts to wind down, my mind is thinking to my fall/winter wardrobe already and I definitely wouldn't say no to a pair of those fab trousers!

My August is going really well so far for the most part, thank you so much for asking. I hope that same rings true for you also, my sweet friend.

      Tons of hugs,
