Photography by Tony Cangiano

Autumn, I have said before - and always felt - is my own personal new year. Of course I celebrate the changing of the calendar guards at the stroke of midnight on January 1st, like most folks, but in terms of what feels like the natural start of the year to me, it has been early fall for my entire life.

I believe in going with our inborn inclinations like this and joyfully welcome autumn as a time of renewal, bolstered energy, goal setting, decluttering, introspective thought and, yes, despite many things coming to a end around this time of the year, even a rebirth of sorts.

My birthday is in July, but I often think of the years of my life as beginning anew each time around in the fall. Today, as we kick off this most gorgeous of jewel toned seasons again, that is very much the case for me.

I also, in viewing these recently captured photos, notice that I look older. I don't say this as a complaint in the slightest (getting older always beats the alternative!), simply as an observation. I've been photographed heavily for a few years now and its fascinating to look back and see subtle signs of (further) age appear on the scene from one season - be it autumn or any of the other three - to the time it rolls around next.

Naturally, to greet this sparkling new autumn, a seasonally inspired outfit was in order. I reached for some familiar staples (the mid-century vintage skirt, bags, gloves, and hat - though I'm sure if this hat, which I've owned for a number of years, has appeared here before or not) and added this gorgeous, very vintage appropriate leaf sweater, which I thrifted several months ago and have been champing at the bit to sport it ever since (those who follow my YouTube channel may recognize it from this recent video featuring examples of vintage appropriate clothing from my own wardrobe).

I love the background and light colours in these images, which were taken at a beautiful woodland nature park in the nearby city of Kelowna (the Robert Frost worthy two paths diverging in the woods behind me in some of them only adds to it appeal to me). Though the leaves had not sprung into full on autumn splendor yet, there were subtle tinges of ripe pear yellow and coppery brown that let one know instantly that they would be doing so in a matter of days.

Connecting with, and spending time in, nature is incredibly important for me and I always love to greet the seasons by making sure to do so, so I couldn't be happier that my shoot for today’s vintage outfit post took place in a majestic forest setting like this.

Years roll on, the seasons pass like two ships in the night, one gradually morphing into the next, and we age. This is the natural cycle and pattern of life. Unchanged since time immemorial.

Am I older? You bet, and I don't mind at all. For each year brings with it new wisdom, new gifts, new lessons, new friends, new memories, and at the same time, the return of old favourites, like autumn itself and many beautiful joys that call this enchanting season home.

    1. You are so very kind, dear Serena. Thank you so much!!! Again, I have no qualms with aging (and thank the universe with every fiber of my being that I get to be here on earth and do so), I just find it fascinating to notice sometimes when I see more signs of doing so in my face and/or body. I'm sure that when I look back on these very photos in even just three or four years, I'll feel like I looked much younger now than I do at that point in time (I see it all the time when I look at snaps from even just 2012 or '13 these days).

Many hugs & joyful start of autumn wishes,

  2. Dear Jessica,
I must say I do not think you look older at all, you look your lovely beautiful self as ever! I absolutely LOVE your sweater, those colours look terrific on you. I love being outdoors and experiencing nature, I believe it strengthens the link we have with the universe (and it has a calming influence on me, which can only be a good thing!) Jenny xx

    1. Very wisely said, dear Jenny. I couldn't possibly agree more and am deeply troubled sometimes by how many folks no longer get to do so (connect with nature and tap into its calming, soothing, inspiring, healing powers). I feel so blessed to live in the part of the world - and country itself - that I do and try never to take the nature that all around us here for granted.

Many hugs & sincere thanks for your beautiful comment,

  4. That's such an unusual - and cute - top! As ever, featured in an immaculately-styled outfit. I adore the blue gloves! It's interesting you say that about looking older - as someone who's been following along for I guess the past year now, it's not something I've observed, but then again, perhaps I wouldn't as I'm not you :) I certainly do notice the same in my own photos, even in the short three years I've been writing my blog. Although how much of that is due to some very dodgy photography in the early days is anyone's guess ;) x

    1. That's very sweet of you to say, dear gal. Objectively, I see less of a difference in age between this point last year and the same two to four years ago. I'll sometimes see a snap of myself from an older post here and almost get caught off guard by how young I think I look in comparison. That's natural though and I don't see aging, especially at this still relatively young point in my life, as anything that really gives me cause to worry or that I have an issue with. I'll happily trade a few more subtle signs of how old I am for the countless benefits that come with being this age. Wisdom, more confidence, (being in) a good place career wise, having a small home of our own, no longer feeling like a kid that almost no one takes seriously, and so and so on. Those are the points that matter, not fine lines, wider cheeks (my face just keeps widening subtly as I age, even when my weight remains the same - oh well!), or a few more wrinkles.

It's really neat that you've noticed your own aging process through your blog, too. I think that fashion bloggers and others who routinely share photos of themselves online are in a relatively unique position to do so in a way that would have been almost unheard of for non-celebs or models prior to the days of digital cameras and the web.

Huge hugs & joyful start of autumn wishes!

    1. *Blush* Thank you very much, dear Helen. My natural waist is relatively small, but because I'm short and have a curvy hourglass shape, and also due to wearing layers at times, sometimes it gets hidden or not shown in its true size by various outfits. That doesn't phase me at all, but it is nice to let my figure shine through a bit more in curve hugging ensemble like this one at least every once in a while.

I hope that you're doing well and having a great first week of autumn!

      Big hugs,

    1. Agreed on all counts, my dear. I am floored by how quickly the past year has flown by. At this precise time last year we were on our wonderful two week long vacation to Vancouver Island. I swear, I think I can even remember what I was wearing on this date last year - it's the recent in my mind.

I don't mind that I look older either. It's great to have more than three decades of life - and experience - under my belt to know that, all things willing, I still have a nice stretch of time ahead of me as well. I'm really enjoying my 30s and look forward to what this autumn and the coming year (from this point onward, I mean) hold in store for me.

    1. You're so sweet, dear Shelia. It's slaying me that I'm not on the Island right now. That's life though - sometimes my work takes priority, sometimes Tony's does, and sometimes we can both get away and have a holiday like last year (no vacations are in the cards for us this year). This time it's Tony's and that's totally okay, but I do wish I was there enjoying Expo this week with you all the same. Fingers firmly crossed that it's able to happen next year!

  8. The print of this sweater is so perfectly 40's! I can't think of anything better than fall leaves and bows! So perfectly fall and feminine. Such great colors in this ensemble, I would have never thought to pull the teal from the sweater for the gloves but it looks so lovely. Great hat too, I have had a red velvet hat in my favorites list on etsy for a while now and you may just push me over the edge into buying it!

    1. Agreed massively!!! This print is so quintessentially 1940s, whereas the slightly dolman sleeve-esque arms is wonderfully 50s (one say that style in the 40s, too, but not as often, IMO), so it's a great piece to sport with looks from the 40s clear on through to the early 60s even.

Thank you very much for your awesomely nice comment and compliments. Pulling a shade from a pattern to use for my choice of glove color is one of my favourite elements of vintage styling. I tried a few other colours here (black, red, white, etc) and none worked as well as these dusty teal ones (which, funnily enough, were last seen here as part of an outfit that essentially kicked off the summer - full circle or what! :)).

Tons of hugs & bliss early autumn wishes!

I have never been more comfortable with myself in my life, and I'm happy about it! :) Yes I do look older than I was before, but since when that's a bad thing? :) And you look beautiful - I don't think you look older by the way :) :) Your skin looks fantastic as well!

    1. That is such a wise way to look at things and really sums up how I feel about aging, too. In the past two years in particular, I feel like I've grown massively as a person and that I am so much more comfortable in my own skin (there's no way I could have started posting videos on YouTube, for example, if I wasn't). I love being in my 30s and am trying to embrace and celebrate all of the perks of this great period of my life.

Thank you so much!!! I think that fall is the kindest season to my perpetually dry and endlessly sensitive skin. It doesn't dry it out as much as summer and (especially) winter does, so that's another point in favour of this season for me. :)

      Oodles of hugs,

  12. I've never really understood people who freak out about getting older, as my Nan used to say it's the one thing you really can't do anything about! Personally I find Autumn a time for reflection and as I really don't do heat, a welcome chance to feel at ease in the temperatures so I feel more active and motivated.

    1. I can see both sides of the coin, but as touched on here, it doesn't really phase me and I think that there are so many perks to aging, especially once you've gotten beyond the very earliest of decades and have (hopefully) grown more confident and self-assured as a person. I wouldn't trade looking 18 or 20 again for the life lessons and wisdom that aging has brought my way and those sorts of things trump looking a touch older any day of the week!

So true!!! Autumn and winter are often my perk times of productivity throughout the year and I am certain that their cooler temps are a big part of the reason (naturally being indoors more often during those seasons helps, too).

Wishing you an absolutely fantastic autumn, dear lady!

And thank you, lovely lady, for the splendidly nice comment and compliments you shared with me here. It's awesome that you're a big fan of red, too. I wear it often, but do try to mix things up to keep its frequent presence on my blog interesting and fresh feeling. The mere fact that it, like many colours, can play a different roll in each season certainly helps there. In this case, it calls to mind the red of falling maple leaves, candy apples, and even this month's upcoming blood moon (which I'm so excited for!).

Thank you again! I hope that this autumn is one of the nicest and most enjoyable ever for you!

  16. Well what a lovely outfit to herald Autumn in! It's particularly inspiring as I've just returned from Spain and had been thinking of bikinis and such, and hadn't put any thought into what I wanted to wear for Autumn, so this will help get me started. I think our faces change, for sure, but I'm not sure that to others it would be seen as 'aging', our faces just simply start to look a little different from time to time. I look back at a few photos from the early blog days and notice I had slightly chubby cheeks in some, which makes me laugh now. I think all we can do is hope to grow into ourselves more? Anyway, I look forward to catching up on your other posts, and thank you so much for your heartfelt words of congratulations on my recent wedding xx

    1. That's a very insightful way to look at things and I completely agree. I think that for me personally, my mother is a great example of what you were discussing. Though objectively I know she's far older than when I was a child, her natural youthfulness partnered with how often I've seen her over the years means that she often still looks so young in my eyes. I think that's a beautiful thing and hope that there's someone out there (Tony perhaps) who views my own aging the same way.

We do definitely grow into ourselves more as we age and that is a brilliant thing to say the least. Sure, it would be great to have the skin (and hair, in my case) of a 18 year old again, but I wouldn't trade a supermodel's body for the wisdom and experience that time has granted me as I've aged.

You're very welcome! I'm so elated for you both and can't wait to see and hear more about the exciting things that have been transpiring in your life lately, darling gal.

  17. Okay so I am pretty JEALOUS that you get the experience the beauty that is fall, with all of the brilliant brightly colored leaves...*sigh*. You always look timeless - I think that's the beauty of wearing vintage/vintage inspired, no one can tell what age you are because they are either too distracted by what you're wearing, or its the fact that vintage looks are so youthful and elegant that you don't look dated the way one might when wearing modern trends that quickly disappear with each season.

    1. Superb points, sweet Harlow - and important reminder to all of us who wear vintage if we do start feeling like we can see our age (not that such is a bad thing of course, but it does affect each of us differently). I think that's a huge part of the reason why women in their 30s and older often looks so remarkably elegant and agelessly beautiful in the mid-twentieth century. Their impeccable sense of style and ability to make the most of their figures helped to give them not so much a young look, but a timeless one and that is something that sadly is often lacking from 21st century fashion.

Thank you very much for your excellent comment and absolutely lovely compliments.

Getting older is a bittersweet thing. But once we adopt the point of view, like you have so graciously displayed here, of rolling with it, enjoying it, and recognizing it as normal and fun, life becomes so much better.

Separating the two has never even crossed my mind and I wouldn't dare try to do so. Each would lose something great, IMO, if I did. I'm also a big fan of fall, although I haven't gone quite as crazy in the run up as I did last year. I think I've been a bit more in the moment with summer than I typically am. I may have to get a pumpkin spice latte soon, though. I semi-ironically got one last year, and they're not bad.

Thrift stores rarely offer up much in the way of true mid-century garments or accessories for me any more, but they are amongst my best sources for vintage appropriate ones and that alone is reason enough for me to frequent them often. They, like gloves, add so very much to an outfit and can serve the practical purpose of helping you stay a bit warmer, too. I'll always hold out hope that the wearing of gorgeous hats comes back in a big way, but doubt, objectively, that it will, given the continual causalization of mainstream fashion.

  26. You look splendid! Perhaps you have a Celt or two somewhere in their ancestry - didn't Samhain mark the start/end of the year for them?

I have hit the point where there are things about ageing I'm definitely not happy with (facial hair WFT?!), but some that are good. As a flipside of becoming invisible, as middle-aged ladies seem to, I'm able to walk home from my dance class after dark with rather more confidence than I ever did in my youth.

    1. Thank you very much, wonderfully lovely lady! I do indeed have some British blood (via one of my paternal great-grandma's) and love to think that it stretches back to the Celts. Indeed! Samhain was the start of the new year and is still seen as such by many Pagans/witches/Wiccans and other practitioners of earth based spiritual paths to this day.

I utterly love how my confidence grows as I age, too. It was something I battled majorly as a youngster, and probably always will to a degree in some spheres, but I've seen it improve in leaps and bounds in recent years and the benefits of such throughout my life and career have been fantastic.

I hope that you're doing well and having a marvelous start of fall. Canadian Thanksgiving is coming up here next Monday and I'm really looking forward to it!

      Big hugs,
      ♥ Jessica

  29. What a lovely autumn outfit, I really love the shirt/sweater with the leaves. And I love the colours you have paired it with. The simple black skirt is just perfect for this. I didn't notice you look older, dear. What I noticed is that your face look kind of worried, is something bothering you? You are always welcome to mail your thoughts to me if something is nagging you. But I do believe that Tony is there for you too. You might also just be tired, I just noticed. And it is none of my business, I know. I am 20 autumns older than you, you know, and I can tell you that I always look forward to the seasons changing, to decorating to the seasons or holidays. I love that autumn has come to Denmark now. Sunday we sat drinking coffee outside without a cardigan, Tuesday it was stormy and 10 C lower, like somebody hit the autumn button. I hope everything is ok at your end. I have book marked your Halloween post, which is a real treat I will spend a lot of time enjoying. Wishing you a lovely day, dear. :) XOXO

    1. Hi sweet Sanne, thank you very much for your lovely, caring comment. No, I swear, nothing major was weighing on my mind them or now. It's possible, as you suggested, that I was tired that day - I frequently am, as I get so little sleep in general due to my health - but honest to goodness, nothing was troubling me and I was actually in great spirits that day, in no small part thanks to the fact that it we were doing the first fall fashion shoot of this year. I sincerely appreciate your concern though and wouldn't hesitate to reach out to you if something was troubling me.

How lovely that you got treated to an autumn storm! It's quite rare to see lightning here during the fall and winter, though rain and of course snow are no strangers. :) I hope that you guys are having a lovely autumn so far. We certainly are, with one of the season's highlights - Canadian Thanksgiving - coming up in just a few days time.

Thank you again for being such a sweet, thoughtful soul and also for each and every awesome blog comment you send my way.

      Giant hugs,
      ♥ Jessica
