Summer might seem like a somewhat strange name to assign today's vintage fashionista, nestled as her appearance is smack dab in the polar opposite season, but there's a logic behind her moniker. You see, today, January 10th, just happens to be - what I loving refer to as - my halfer day, aka, my half birthday. In precisely six months time, I'll turn thirty years old, a point which I'm thoroughly exciting about and eagerly looking forward to.

That said, I'm not in an epic rush to way good-bye to my twenties quite yet and am happy to celebrate these last six months of that pivotal, important decade in my life. Unlike real birthdays, today doesn't involve a tasty cake (unless I decided to bake one :)), a party or any presents, though I do like to think of the very day as a kind of gift unto itself.

One's half birthday is a great time to stop and reflect on what you've achieved, experienced and enjoyed over the past six month, as well as what you hope and plan that next six have up their sleeve for you. And while it might not entail a full on fete, that doesn't mean you can't still whip out some of your favourite party attire, like our stylish girl, Summer, did, and toast the future all the same.

Before we clink glasses however, the idea of a cake is sounding mighty tempting right about now. Hmm, perhaps this half-birthday gal should make a beeline for the kitchen and whip on into existence. Christmas is behind us once more, Valentine's Day won't fall for more than a month still, and Easter is ages away, and since I rarely eat sugary treats, it seems like a good enough reason to be to indulge in one this January. Swing on by, if you fancy a slice, too. :)

Have a fabulous Friday and fun filled, sweet-as-birthday-cake-frosting weekend, my dears!

  1. Happy half year birthday you youngin'!

I do my best to forget birthdays. Once you pass 45 and are edging ever-so-close to 50 you simply cannot be bothered, although my Mom insists I should be celebrating each and every one.

How I love those gloves and shoes! I think my hands are a size 7 though and I know for a fact I could only walk 2 feet in those shoes. Why do the prettiest shoes have to be the hardest to wear?

    Enjoy your day : )

    bisous

  2. That blue coat is just gorgeous! I have a set of crystal earring and necklace that belonged to my Great Aunt that I wear at every event that I think she would have liked to have gone to. She bought the set when she lived in Brooklyn NY in the 1940's.

    Blessings

    1. Thank you very much, dear Hayley! I don't think it's strange at all. Me and my siblings all enjoyed doing it as youngsters, as did a few of my friends. What day of the year is your half-birthday?

  6. Those green heels would be perfect for St. Patrick's Day...a day this household never lets slip by uncelebrated. It's a day of Irish music and the tasty traditional meal of corned beef, carrots, cabbage, and mashed potatoes - pass the butter for those vegetables, please.

I just love that green and blue plaid dress! And those gloves would go nicely with it, too.

Have a great Friday, dear Jessica!

  8. The 30s are a great decade, you still have quite a bit of youth and also a great deal of wisdom:) The 40s are when the wrinkles start to begin:)) I love the plaid dress you shared. I was actually looking at plaid dresses this morning but haven't pulled the trigger on one. It's hard to think about summer in the middle of this cold but it is the best time to buy summer dresses when there is less competition:)

    1. So true! I sometimes find it's harder to shop for clothing in general in the winter. You're typically outside way less often, the weather rarely cooperates when you want to take outfit photos, and being cold just sort of craps your mood at times, plus after all the expenses of Christmas, it's not the time of the year when I usually add a lot to my wardrobe. Come the first signs of spring though, the gloves are off (literally, if we're talking snow gloves! :)) and once yard sale season kicks in, I'm eager as ever to start stocking my wardrobe with new (old) summer pieces once more.

Big hugs & tons of happy weekend wishes,

    1. Thank you very much, dear Ann! It really is a dazzling hair bloom, I agree. It looks a bit like chiffon or nylon scarf and a hydrangea plant had a baby. :)

      Wishing you a marvelous weekend!

  10. HOLY SMOKES! I have that set of aurora borealis beads/earrings! I actually have two sets! My Mom gave me hers and my grandma's for my first wedding (yes, first wedding.). Mom's first serious boyfriend, Sammy, gave them a pair each as a special gift in the 1956/57. :) I need to dig them out and wear them with something special.

  11. I remember being absolutely terrified to hit 30. But 40 went much smoother. :) Please don't worry about 30 as I did, it's not worth the energy.

    1. Fear not, dear Betsy, I am super excited to hit 30! More so than I was to turn 20 even. Yes, it means I'm getting older, but we all are in our own way, and I'm soooo ready to be done with my 20s. They were a roller coaster from the get to and though things have calmed down a bit in the past couple of years (to a certain degree), I'm still keen to move into the next decade of my life, which I hope will ultimately be a much more stable and enjoyable one.

Big hugs & oodles of happy weekend wishes,
      ♥ Jessica

  12. Your 30s are a good decade I think easier then your twenties. I'll be 36 in 2 months and I'm a little sad to be getting older just because my early 30s were such a good time.
    Also those gloves are lovely

  13. I have never thought about a half birthday before, but what a great opportunity for reflection! Happy half- birthday to you, and as one who has been there, my thirties were awesome (actually so much better than my twenties!) so you have a lot to look forward to! Enjoy every minute, and P.S. Those green shoes are awesome!!

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Philippa. You should celebrate your half-birthday, too, from here on out. It really is a fun excuse to whip up (or go out for) a special meal, reflect on your life as it is right now in the moment, and plan for the next six months of your year.

      Tons of gentle hugs,
      ♥ Jessica

  14. Happy half-birthday, Jessica! One of my grade-school teachers was always quite enthusiastic about celebrating these, which meant she brought cookies or some other treat in on her half-birthday. Hope yours is fun and wonderful!

    1. Thank you very much, dear Jen! That's really cool! I can distantly recall at least a couple of teachers who asked us (in the earliest of grades) when our half-birthdays were, but I don't remember any who went out their way to celebrate their own with the class. How awesome that you had such a fun, celebration loving teacher.

Big hugs & tons of happy weekend wishes,

  16. What a nice idea to celebrate half-birthday! You are a wonderful young lady, and 30 means a lot of time to enjoy life! I wish you a joyful, happy half-birthday!!

  17. I have a two strand crystal necklace which belonged to my mother but alas I haven't worn it even though I love it. It always seemed too dressy but perhaps I should, as part of my goal to glam myself up this year.

I love the idea of a half-birthday especially when you reflect on the events of the previous 6 months. Happy half-birthday dear Jessica!! :)

  19. happy half birthday, dear. :) I have never thought about my half birthday, but it seams like a great idea to stop and make a status, I will will do so in May. I remember DH's grandma told about half birthday presents, but it has never been used in my family. Hope the cake was good. :)

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Sanne! It really is a fabulous "out of the blue" reason to celebrate an otherwise seemingly random day (assuming, of course, that your half-birthday didn't fall on another important day, such as Christmas or Easter). I love that your DH grandma discussed half-birthday presents with you. It makes me wonder, looking much further back in time, who was the first person to do anything to observe this day in their lives? (And what did they do to celebrate? We'll likely never know!).

      Have a fantastic weekend!!!

  20. The 30s are fantastic-you will love it! My bday is in 13 days...I will be 38 and nearer to 40. So I decided to attempt my 40th bday in a big way-find a vintagey restaurant in Manhattan somewhere and do an old hollywood theme. Very me, huh? hehe But I think its so imp to celebrate. I used to do half bdays with my babies when they turned 6M. I would make them half a cake heheeh I know its fun and silly but they can look back one day and see us celebrating them even on their half way mark!!! Happy half bday!! xox

  24. Happy Halfie! We do half birthdays for the wee one, but I bake a whole cake. My mother would buy me a lemon cake (always, because I liked it)cut it in half, and freeze the remainder. We never saw the remainder, and I suspect my Dad would eat it when no one was looking.

I can't remember my 30's...so I must have had one heck of a time! I kinda remember 40...must have been less fun.

Oh, if only I could squeeze my big feet into those green shoes.

  25. Although I usually love my autumn/winter vintage wardrobe inspiration a bit more, I have been thinking a lot about what I would like to do for a spring/summer vintsperation. I love all the blue and green.

I have a friend who celebrates every 6 months :) calls it the ".5 " celebration.
I have a birthday coming up too... however i think i will skip it this year.

    1. That's a fab name for half-birthdays! Rolls off the tongue a little easier, too. How exciting that your birthday is coming up soon. I love birthdays of all kinds, be they my own or other peoples'. Even if you're keen to skip it, please know that I wish you the very happiest of days and years ahead, sweet Lorena.
