The best of Chronically Vintage's past Halloween posts


Humble sort that I try to be, I'm always a touch leery of using the word "best" in reference to my own work, but that descriptor does serve well in the context of a roundup post like this and so after some humming and hawing, I went with it.

Given that October 31st is my favourite holiday, hands (or would that be werewolf paws) down, I've certainly referenced All Hallows Eve more times than I could ever remember in the course of my blog posts, but today's roundup - a first actually in terms of gathering up and shining the spotlight on several of my own posts here - is one where the entries featured within have a strong emphasis on Halloween itself.

This is my first entry for October 2015 and as seasonal/festive posts often serve folks best when they have time to read and enjoy and/or make or cook things featured in them, I couldn't think of a better way to kick off my favourite month of the year (which, for the record, I'm ridiculously giddy about the fact that it's here again) than highlighting some of the fun Halloween themed posts from the past 6.5 years of my blog's life.

Please bear in mind that in certain instances, products featured within these posts may no longer be available or that websites (or videos) may have been taken down.  In general however, their advice and suggestions still prove helpful and most of them are still as applicable today as when they they first appeared here.

Naturally, given my affinity for the last day of October, you can count on some new Halloween themed posts here as October continues and, hopefully, an outfit post at the start of November highlighting what I wore this year for the big night.

As usual, I'm keeping my costume plans under wraps, as I love to surprise everyone with my choice of festive garb each year (here's what Tony and I, as well as my mom and sister, sported for Halloween 2014).


There is a powerful energy in the air come October. The last embers of summer's heat mingle with the first icy winds of winter. The sky, trees, and even the ground itself is decked out in golden finery and an intrinsic desire to nest and savour the bounties of hearth, home, and harvest alike comes out in full force.


I hope that this post helps you to get even more in the spirit of the season and that this October proves to be a resplendently lovely month of all of us. Happy Halloween countdown, everybody!!!

Boo!!! Did I scare you? I hope not, because I've always been more of a fan of the cute and charming side of Halloween than the nightmare inducing horror filled one. That isn't to say I don't enjoy a bit of a startle under the right circumstances (say like a haunted house), but overall, I'm more apt to carve a smiling face on my jack-o-lantern than a grimacing, frightening one.

If, like me, you're a massive fan of all things Halloween, you're probably on the edge of your (rickety antique) seat for next Friday! At less than a week away now, there's so much to see and do and enjoy before the big day gets here. Much like as with Christmas, Halloween has never, and will never just be a one day event for me. Yes, technically, the big day is the 31st, but prior to that I genuinely love the anticipation, the planning, the sweet treats (candy apples! caramel corn! pumpkin pie!), and the excited thrill of anticipation that fills the ever chillier autumn air.

I wait for these last few beautiful, exciting days of fall each year in a way that I can honestly say, as much as I love certain other holidays and special events, any other. They make me feel like a child again, bursting with wide-eyed wonder, a shiver running up my spine with each creak in the floor boards, every ghost story told, and the each little sound that went bump in the night.

There is a magical merriment to this time of the year, regardless of if you observe Halloween on not. Fall is at its zenith, decked out in a regal gown as rich as any brocade ever woven, of jewel toned leaves and fields so golden they rival the sun. The nights are getting shorter, but the days haven't been reduced to mere hours quite yet. The world smells of damp earth and apple cider, straw and root vegetables. We can still feel warmth in the light, but there's that distinct nip of winter's impending arrival in the air as well and the two swirl about like miniature candy bar wrappers waltzing merrily in the air.

If I had the incredible power to control the seasons, this period would be at least a couple of months, instead of a few brief weeks, if we're lucky, long. And yet, just as quickly as I write that, I can't help but wonder, isn't part of the inherent appeal, charm, and deeply embed beauty of mid-autumn the fact that it is, like sighting a ghostly apparition, such a fleeting moment?

It might just be, you know, and that's the all the more reason to savour it, like you would your favourite Halloween treat, while it's here. Soon, all too soon, we'll be up to our eyeballs and earlobes in sweaters, down parkas, and Christmas decorations once again. Let's take a moment today, and every day for the next little while, to stop and smell the pumpkins, so to speak, while they're still here and give thanks for the all of the fun, fancifulness, and truly wonderful elements that make the Halloween season one that is so appealingly unlike any other.

It seriously is.

Those who go wild for, eat, breath and sleep, fashion are, by their very nature, fans of dressing up, pulling out all the stops, trying new things, taking sartorial risks, amassing magnificent wardrobes, and, unquestionably most important of all, brining a profound sense of happiness into our lives via our style choices.

As such, when a reason to dress up like Halloween comes along, we rarely limit ourselves "just" to our costume for the big night on October 31st ourselves. No we - myself very much included - love to start sporting the colours of the season early on. If not in September (*shots hand up in the air*), then October itself. Out come the inky, bat wing blacks, the warm, earthy oranges, the crisp Bartlett pair and sunflower petal yellows, the dusty, muted olives and sages, the straight from a vineyard in France burgundies, the slate greys, midnight navy blues, aged wood browns, and gentle, sweet vanilla ice cream worthy creams and ivories. These colours speak not only of Halloween, but of autumn itself, and we're keen to pay their unmatched beauty homage via the outfits we don.

This fall, I've been busy as bumblebee stocking the shelves of my Etsy shop with dozens of new vintage clothing, accessory, handbag, jewelry, and ephemera listings, many of which, intentionally, fit sublimely into in autumn's colour palette and a good many of which can be used as part of outfits that celebrate Halloween - and of course, which can be worn on the big day itself.

Today's Vintage Fashionista Friday post takes some of those pieces, such as a stop-you-in-your-tracks cool 1960/1970s airy chiffon tired skirt dress that channels both a late Edwardian and 1930s vibe (if was my size, I don't know if I could have brought myself to list it, but alas, it's not, so it's endlessly Halloween perfect orange and black polka dot awesomeness gets to go live in some other vintage adoring lady's wardrobe) and partners them with other marvelous October 31st appropriate offerings from across Etsy and elsewhere on the web.

Halloween, my favourite holiday of the year, is only twenty-four hours long, but you'd never know it if you saw what I wore everyday in the weeks leading up to it. I reach for the colours at work in today's post, as well as those of fall itself, for weeks in advance and well into November, too, and encourage you to do the same. Let's dress up, have a blast, and celebrate this short, gorgeous, eerily fantastic time of the year - before we know it we'll be up to our eyeballs in snow and freezing temps again, which is almost a scarier thought than any Halloween costume or outfit could ever be! :D
