Before we delve into the heart of today's post, I must say for the record, that this outfit had gloves - elegant olive green gloves, to be exact - but after a very long day of driving (these snaps were taken right after we got back to Penticton on the day we returned home from our recent trip to the Kootenays), I completely forgot to put them on before the camera made an appearance. C'est la vie!

This outfit is very, very characteristic of the type that I tend to wear when reaching for separates while on a holiday, road trip, or other jaunt away from home - as well, naturally, as while I'm on local turf, too. It's comprised of a fabulous 1940s/1950s style “Paula Skirt” from Hell Bunny that I picked up in early 2015, I believe it was, from Blame Betty, one of Canada's few online vintage/pinup girl/rockabilly clothing sellers.

From the first wearing onward, it became one of my favourite skirts I've ever owned and I absolutely live in it now any time I want a fuller black skirt (as opposed, to more of a pencil or a-line style). It's comfortable, swishy and can be partnered with a crinoline of the correct length, if so desired, but I tend to let it hang au naturel, which generally helps to lend it even more of a forties vibe.

My love of muted vintage colours, which I've touched on in a couple of posts here recently, is only growing stronger with each passing day. Thus, I packed a wardrobe largely comprised of such for our fun long weekend getaway in April and opted to sport this charming dark earth toned blouse for the day that we headed back to Penticton from Nelson.

It's one of three vintage blouses that I bought (along with some other items, including an amazing mid-century vintage red winter coat, that I haven't debuted here yet, but plan to next fall or winter) from Used House of Vintage in Vancouver, while we were in that gorgeous city at the end of last autumn.

Though my collection of such might not win any awards for the biggest size ever, I actually have an incredibly huge love for vintage blouses and have been diligently working to expand the selection in my wardrobe in recent years. Adding three to it in one fell swoop a few months ago definitely helped big time and I'm sure that the other two - one of which is an original c. 1950s Levi Straus paisley print blouse - will appear here on the blog as time goes on, too.

When vintage blouses pair with muted hues, as they do here, well, let's just say it's all I can to to keep my legs from turning to complete and total Jell-O!

I was in a major mood for all things wilderness related, too, while we were bopping around the gorgeous evergreen bedecked Kootenays, so I decided to pair this darling mid-century blouse with a very cute little vintage black fox brooch that I picked up a few months ago from Dutch Etsy seller Broesj.

It's such a fun, sweet piece of costume jewelry and I just love that its combination of black plastic and clear rhinestones will make it a snap to sport the whole year through (much, really, like this 3/4 sleeve vintage blouse itself).

These snaps were taken, as mentioned above, right after we got back to Penticton on one of the sunnier days that we've had this (rainy/windy/often usually nippy) spring. We wanted to share the highlights of our travels with my folks while they were still bracingly fresh in our minds, so we quite literally drove straight to their house after returning to our town.

Over the years, you've seen outfit shoots taken in my parents backyard and on their deck (also on the back of the house), but I don't believe we've done one in their driveway before and in the interest of keeping the background scenery here fresh on a frequent basis, it seemed like a lovely spot to grab some snaps.

And you know, even though I forgot to slip on my olive hued gloves, I still love the the over all look of this outfit - perhaps even, given the sunny weather that day, all the more so - without them.

It's hard to believe that nearly two months have passed since these photos were taken. It's fitting that they were nabbed in mid-spring, as this will be last outfit post of the season before we jump head first into an exciting bevy of summertime outfits starting next week.

I've greatly enjoyed the fun assortment of looks that I was able to share with you guys here this spring and am genuinely excited to launch into another summer's worth of diverse vintage, reproduction, and vintage appropriate looks - including (hopefully!) what I'll be sporting for Canada Day, my birthday, Tony's birthday, the August long weekend, Labour Day, and plenty of other fun events and delightful everyday outfits alike.

Here's to the last lovely week of spring 2016 and everything - fashion related and otherwise - that summer promises to hold in store for each of us, my dear friends!

    1. Thank you very much, my dear friend. I truly love greens and find I'm gravitating more and more towards them with each passing year. I have another (considerably different) outfit with a (different) green top coming down the pipeline here soon and wouldn't be the least bit surprised if further verdant outfits follow this summer. Green and summer go together like July and ice cream! :)

  6. What a fabulous outfit, it may be muted in tone but still manages to draw the eye from the verdant backdrop.
The blouse is gorgeous, I thought it may have been by Liberty, the print and colour are so typical of some of their vintage fabrics. xxx

    1. Thank you sweetly, dear Vix. Great eye! It definitely has a Liberty look, I completely agree. The tag is from a Canadian brand however, if memory serves me right. I'd love to stumble upon a mid-century Liberty piece around these days. That would be so cool! It's entirely possible. I seem to find quite a fair bit of jewelry from the UK here (most of which lands in my Etsy shop), so perhaps a Liberty blouse will come my way one of these days, too.

    1. Thank you so very much, lovely Denise. Gosh, am I glad we grabbed these snaps, even being a bit road worn, that day. Little did we know that mere days later, it would start raining and scarcely stop since. Green as the plants were then, they're doubly (or more) so now, after such a copious amount of precipitation. I've never experienced a wetter spring in this area before and really hope we dry out by the time summer officially starts.

  9. Hello dear Jessica,

That is indeed a lovely skirt. I love the fullness. In general, I prefer full skirts - they make me feel so feminine, and they are easy to move in. I love the look of pencil skirts, but do not feel so at ease in them; they are fine for posing and sitting (going out to dinner).

Love your blouse as well. I too love muted shades.

  11. Dear Jessica, what a lovely outfit. I love the colours in your blouse and the fox brooch too. Do your parents live very far from you? How useful to have a skirt that you can wear with a petticoat or not. I have not yet tried one, but they do look very good. This year is really going by very fast. We are half way through already. I am looking forward to seeing all your outfits for the special days ahead. best wishes and big hugs, Elizabeth xx

  12. Those rich tones are so pretty! And I am loving that cute brooch. This one of my absolute favorite styles- The high waist long flowing skirt, a button down floral patterned top and a few lovely vintage accessories. I am always hoping to find skirts like this among my thrift store travels but rarely have any luck. Have a great last week of spring! :)

    1. Thank you very much, honey. I agree, fuller skirt styles are getting hard to find at thrift stores days, especially as garments as "new" as the 80s are becoming rarer and rarer there (at least around these parts). I typically tend to spot the highest concentration of such around the end of the summer. Perhaps people are swapping in their cold weather wardrobes and parting ways with summer pieces that they no longer want/fit/like?

      Have a fantastic weekend!

  14. Lovely combination of skirt and blouse: the solid skirt allows the print on that lovely blouse to shine as the focal point! And, the outfit looks wonderful even without the gloves- but isn't that the most annoying thing? (Planning out the perfect outfit, and then forgetting, or circumstances not allowing for a certain element!)

    1. Yes, so totally, yes! Though, I must say, for me personally, perhaps a bigger "ugh" realization, is when I'm reviewing outfit photos on the computer after a shoot and notice something out of place/wonky/visible that shouldn't be, such as my buckle belt being askew or a bra strap showing. Oh well! That's real life and as I've long maintained here, it's better to document the moment, however it may unfold, than not at all (or to overly sweat that sort of inconsequential small stuff).

Dear students of art, a hint on proper color choices:
Like you see in this stellar example, Mrs. Cangiano has chosen to put an emphasis on her outfit by standing in front of mute-color wall, yet she gave the definition to the overall image by giving it a color-boosting greenery in the corner (not to overwhelm the center piece).

This is how I would teach a group of art students.

    1. Hello my fellow Jess, thank you very much for your lovely comment. It is getting harder and harder to find vintage (especially pre-1960s) hats in the wild, as they say, these days, I agree. For that, and other reasons (including high shipping costs on most hats due to their size when shopping online from the States and elsewhere abroad), they are one of the key things I hunt for while vintage shopping during a vacation or business trip. Still no guarantee I'll hit upon on, but there's usually a better chance of such happening in a big city with multiple vintage, antique, thrift, consignment, etc shops. I hope a great chapeau or two comes your way soon, my dear.

And, YAY for Used! I went there when I visited Vancouver. It was amazing!

    1. Foxes are so awesome! They're one of my favourite critters ever. When I worked up in (the historic living ghost town of) Bakerville, I'd often see them in the very early morning hours before the workday began, which is a standout memory of my time there for sure.

That's awesome! I adore Used and readily admit that I went on a bit of a spree there last year. I'm so looking forward to sharing snaps of the gorgeous red vintage winter coat I picked up from them. It was definitely the pièce de résistance of that visit.

Big hugs & happy start of summer wishes,

    1. That's awesome! I have (also thrifted) this same bracelet in yellow, too. I wonder what other colours it was created in and if either of us will ever come across them.

Big hugs & many thanks for your lovely comments today,
      ♥ Jessica

    1. Thank you sweetly, lovely Laura. It's a big time favourite of mine, too. Were I a seamstress with the skills to do so (which, sadly, I am not), I know that I would try to replicate its design in scads of other fun, vintage appropriate fabrics.

Huge thanks for all of your awesome blog comments this week!

  42. I see a trend here - Jess is doing autumn in spring. I suppose because she cannot wait for Halloween. Haha! :) Lovely outfit which becomes you and your hair colour so perfectly. And if you ever get tired of that gorgeous fox brooch, do send it to me. I will look forward to seeing your vintage red coat, what a fabulous find. Today the rain is pouring down in Denmark, which is perfect weather for working on photos for my Etsy shop update. Wishing you a lovely day, dear. :)

    1. You know, sweet Sanne, you are 100% correct. I've long known that fall brings me a certain type of joy that no other season can match and that I'm happiest when it's fall or focusing on fall related things, so I've been looking for more ways to weave elements of that season into my life throughout the rest of the year - while still, of course, appreciating and trying to get the most out of spring, summer and winter, too. I find that I'm feeling really at home in muted and dark colours this year, too - which may very well tie into what I just said. So for a fellow autumn fan like me, I hope you'll enjoy seeing earthy hues here throughout the rest of the year. :)

Great job for looking for the silver lining in a grey day (I try to do that as well). We've had so many of them lately here, too, and while a hindrance in some ways (such as for taking photos outdoors), they've been very helpful on the productivity front. I hope you had a wonderful Etsy listing session and that all is well on your end as June wraps up.

Tons of hugs & happy start of summer wishes,
      ♥ Jessica
