Photography by Tony Cangiano

In the last month or so, we have had numerous rainy days, many of which were accompanied by thunder and lightning storms, and which inevitably - and much to our viewing pleasure - resulted in tons of flat out stunning rainbows. In fact, at one point, Tony and I started sarcastically joking each time one popped up by saying, "Ooooh, how original Penticton, another rainbow!" :D Of course we were totally kidding and adored seeing all of these majestic meteorological phenomena added an incredible vibrancy to our skies.

Inspired by the plethora of 'bows, I felt that it was high time I shared one of my very favourite warm weather dresses with all of you, as its palette takes a serious cue from rainbows everywhere and also suits the sizzling hot season that we're heading into so nicely.

This is, there's no ifs, ands, or buts about it, a boldly hued frock and as such, it’s wise to keep accessory colours both in the same tonal range and to something of a minimum. One red and two gold bangles on my wrists, a cute c. 1960s berry brooch, a red snood, and a blue cross body/shoulder bag, plus red patent heels were it, save for my coral hued cardigan.

As a massive fan of celebrating the importance of colour in your wardrobe, this is a fun, cheerful outfit that embraces that concept head on, and while it might brighten the day big time, it would be  apt to feel rather out of place in the fall, winter, or early spring. It screams late spring or summer and is instantly reminiscent of not only a rainbow's symphony of hues, but of those found in the sort of glorious, heat baked sunrises and sets that usually only appear during this chapter of the year as well.

These snaps were taken right here in downtown Penticton on a small foot bridge that connects Ellis Street with the back of Main Street. As two of the oldest and most historically riches streets in the town, this is spot that always seems especially natural to me for a vintage outfit photo shoot (we've shot here once before, as you may recall from this 2013 outfit post), even if the wee bridge itself is quite modern.

As I'd touched on briefly in this post earlier in the month, Tony is going to the States for work this summer. In fact, he left yesterday and will be gone until the first week of September. That means it's just me and the adorable pets for the next few weeks and as such, this summer is going to be very different in some respects.

All though the prospect of Tony heading south for the summer came about relatively quickly, in a matter of just a few weeks during the second half of the spring, in that time, as much as my health would permit, we scrambled to get as many outfit photo shoots in as we could before he left.

While I may have posted a few more between June and September had Tony been here all summer like usual, over all we were still, fortunately, able to nab several and thus I'll be able to continue to share new vintage outfits with you all summer long (yippee!), even though my darling photographer will be over 1,500 kilometers away.

Without Tony home to help with certain aspects of daily life, and because I don't drive (though thankfully my parents do and can give me lifts sometimes for things like grocery shopping and doctors appointments; I'll use a taxi or public transportation for those when they're not able to), I know that his absence will have a deep impact not only on my heart (as in, I'll miss him dearly!), but significantly on the state of my health at times throughout the next 2.5 months, too.

I can only guess as to how big of an impact that will be and how it will play into my day-to-day life, including blogging and running my Etsy shop, but as always, I'll hope for the best, think positively, and do as much as I realistically can. Though this time apart will be a hard on both of us (prior to this, the longest we've ever been apart since tying the knot in 2004, was 8 or 9 days), thanks to the fact that summer passes at the speed of light no matter what, I bet it won't feel like long until we're back in each other's arms again.

In the meantime though, there will be lots keeping me busy this summer on top of work. From my birthday next month on the 10th to Peachfest in August, time spent with family and friends to hitting as many yard sales on foot as I possibly can, I know I'll be on my toes all summer long and I think that's a very good thing when one is missing the love of their life something fierce.

So, my dears, while this summer isn't likely to unfold quite how I'd envisioned earlier in the year, I have no doubt that it will still be plenty of fun, full of hard work, and perhaps, who knows, maybe even include another rainbow or two. If not, there's always this fab sunrise hued dress to keep me covered in that department! :)

    1. Thank you very much for your understanding, sweet dear. Tony travels periodically for work, but usually it's just 2 - 7 days. I'll miss him massively, but we'll certainly both manage and at the speed summer always seems to whiz by, I'm sure it won't feel like too long until we're happily back under the same roof again.

      Big hugs,

  2. Lovely dress Jessica! It reminds me of a dress my mum had when I was a child, but more a pastel rainbow hue. It was pastel pink, blue and yellow, it was so pretty and I always wished it was my dress lol.
I hope your not too lonely over the summer and your pets keep you company, which of course is what pets are great for! Sounds like you have some interesting post lined up, can't wait to see them x

  3. Jessica, you are like some mouthwatering fruit salad in those gorgeous colours! I had to do a bit of a double-take because in my feed I didn't realise it was you at first. Love this outfit so much, it's one of my favourites of yours!

Hang in there this summer without Tony, that sounds tough to be apart for so long, so I wish you lots of fun with all the good things coming up to keep you occupied.

    1. What a deliciously lovely description of how I look here, sweet dear, thank you so much!!!

True, this colour palette casts something of a yellowish tone on my skin, which objectively is why I don't wear it all that often, and in a way it does look less like me than usual - especially with the pulled back hair factored in, too.

Thank you. I'll get by for sure - between my independent spirit and the mountain of work I plan to accomplish this summer, I should keep loneliness at bay and thankfully do have friends and family in town to visit, which helps ensure I'm not just talking to the pets all summer! :D

Big hugs & the happiest start of summer wishes!

  5. Oh no! I can relate on many levels. My husband has been away a lot especially when he was in the military. It was especially rough when the kids were little. My now college age daughter is having trouble learning how to drive so my days are full driving her between college and work. Busy, busy, but as you say we make the best of it. =) I have had several health issues myself recently and a few medical procedures in the last month. All of these things have hindered my historical and vintage sewing. Oh well. Rooting for you and your health and all to go well! =)
I enjoy your blog a lot!

    1. Hi lovely Laurie, thank you very much for your understanding and for sharing about some of your own similar experiences with me. I am certain that time apart from one's spouse would be all the more difficult with children at home. I'm truly sorry to hear that you battle chronic health issues, too, and that you've had to have some procedures as of late. My heart and healing wishes are with you - and I am always, always here if you ever need someone to talk to about anything.

    1. That really and truly would be amazing!!! I've never been to California and have actually only spent a few hours in the States ever (a single day trip just into Washington state back in early 2013), so getting a chance to spend more time there and see my sweet hubby again before September would truly be spectacular.

That's really neat! Orange is Tony's favourite colour, too, and I usually wear it on his birthday in celebration of that fact and him alike.

Big hugs & many thanks for your lovely comment,

I am sorry to hear that Tony won't be around for the summer, it certainly does change everything.

  8. I just adore your way with colours, Jessica, and this outfit is the epitome of what's so fantastic about how you put things together and bring out the best in them! This is one of my favourite outfits of yours, I think, as while it's hard to choose the colours are so cheerful and the balance between the dress and the accessories is so spot on. Gorgeous! I can't believe Tony has gone already - I feel like you were telling me it was a potential on the horizon about a week ago! Ever your friend if you want someone to chat to, of course, but it sounds like you've got lots to keep you occupied and have an incredibly positive approach to something that's quite a change. You're inspiring like that :) x

I know, eh?! Despite the individual days themselves often feeling very long, the few brief weeks we had between when we first found out about him possibly going and when he actually left yesterday flew past so quickly. I'm not sure if it's even fully kicked in for me yet that he's in the States - it just feels more like he's going overnight or for the week.

You're the sweetest and I love talking to you anytime, so I will definitely take you up on that offer, honey. Thank you so much (for everything)!!!

What a lovely combination of colors you are wearing, Jessica! It sounds like you will face some challenges this summer, but with your never-give-up attitude you will be fine. (I hope!) It would be worse if you didn't have pets to keep you company, I would think. There are times I'd rather talk to our cats than talk to my husband. :)

    1. Thank you very much, dear Denise. In all likelihood, I will ultimately be fine for sure, especially since I do have some family members very close by to help out with some of the things that Tony usually does or that we do together by car (for example, I don't drive - so not having someone to do so just about anytime will definitely be one of the biggest temporary changes in my life). I'm still very excited for this summer and look forward to it hopefully being a very productive, fun filled, lovely one all the same.

Many thanks again & have a stellar season yourself!

  16. Totally loving the rainbow look, and the red snood is a great addition! I know you're going to really miss your man, though--good thing for all this technology for staying in touch! Angel and I haven't ever been separated too long since marriage--usually 2 or 3 weeks at most, but phone calls and emails are the best!

  17. Wow! I really like the rainbow dress with those accessories! I always struggle to accessorize when it comes to colourful frocks because there are so many colours to choose from and how do I know they're the right ones etc. I think the time will pass very quickly. The weeks are going so fast lately. It might be a bit difficult not having him there for a couple of months, but I think those months will be over before you know it :)

    1. Thank you very much, honey! Though I'm not calling this a hard and fast rule, one approach when it comes to accessorizing a garment or outfit (skirt and blouse, jeans and a sweater, etc) that has a lot of colour in it is to pick out one or more hue(s) from the pattern that are not very dominate. By highlighting that/those colour(s) you help them to stand out more in the pattern itself and great a fabulous depth of visual interest with your outfit.

I'm sure they will and am still very much looking forward to summer and all the fun, festivities and work I'm sure it will house.

  18. Let me write this (allow me): he is your rock. :)
It is might good to have a "rock" you can lean onto when you need it, knowing that he will not move 'till you're better, happer and/or healthier. You are blessed in a way many only dream of.
    I am glad for you.
Yeah, being away for over 2 months (when you were never apart) might sound intimidating - but I can feel that you two will find this to be a new and amazing chapter of your story. You'll both learn new things, and all that "long distance" you might have windered about.. now you will learnb that too.. I can tell you: if you're as kind and loving as I know you to be - you'll make this time-apart an adventure.

    ...
I hope your health won't put you in much trouble and your summer will be amazing.

    1. Hello my darling friend, thank you very much for your wise, wonderfully nice comment. Tony is my rock is countless ways for sure and if though I'll cope and get by well on my own, I will miss him to no end every day that he's away.

Absolutely! Time apart, I firmly believe, is important for individual growth and strengthening a relationship alike. We've been under the same roof nearly every day since I was 20 (and he 24) so getting to experience life on own for a little bit must surely stand to have some positives - though I do of course feel so grateful for the fact that we get to be reunited again in a few short weeks. I would never want to go through life in long run without my beloved husband by my side, if I had any choice in the matter.

My deepest thanks for your beautiful words,

  22. Oh, dear. That's a long time your love is gone. I wish I could be near you and help you and drive you. But I can only send you lots of good thoughts, and hopes that you do take it easy, now that you are alone. Do take your health serious, so you are OK when Tony returns. I am sure he has told you the same, but I gladly do it again. Horray for Skype and the like. I know you cannot hug and kiss him, but it is so much easier in our time than in the fifties. You have simply stocked up on outfit photos. ;) You are so very thoughtful. But even without them, your blog will survive, since your posts always are so well written, inspiring and charming. And what a charming dress! I am a bit envious, and you must have many bags, since you always have one that matches perfectly. Such a well put together look your have created. We have lots of rain in Denmark too, but very rarely rainbows, so do ship some of those too. I am working on updating my Etsy shop today on my day off. Last Wednesday I took a lot of photos, so on this cold and gray day I will work on a major update. Wishing you a lovely day, dear. And do remember all the good things the love of your life does to others. He is definately a "good boy". :)

    1. Hi sweet Sanne, thank you so very much for your caring, wonderfully kind comment. I too wish that you lived nearby - not just for the summer, but always. It would be such a blast to hang out together in person and talk about vintage, nails, history, movies, and so much more.

I tried to stock up on outfit photos, but I was going through quite a bad spell with my health recently and was bedridden for almost three weeks, which was such awful timing, as it meant I wasn't able to do outfit photos for any of those days. Thankfully though we did get a few "ahead of time" shoots in before then and even a couple this past weekend, right before Tony left, so by spacing them out a little more than my usual summer average, I should be able to make it through to around the time that Tony gets back.

That's really sweet of you to say and notice. I do have a decent amount of handbags at this point, but such was not always the case, as my pesky nickel allergy means that I need to avoid those with much metal (hardware, straps, etc) on the outside. That said, because I've spent about twenty years now looking for those with little to no metal and trying to make them last for as long as possible when I did find them, I have amassed a good sized collection of purses now. I'm always on the prowl though, especially for those in colours and sizes I don't have. My latest purse buy earlier this year was a brown c. early 60s handbag that I'll be sharing here this summer (I don't think I've done so already?). I actually find vintage brown purses to be really hard to come by, especially offline, so scoring this classic gem was a major win in my books! :)

He truly is a fantastic, inspiring, incredibly hard working man, you're spot on there. I couldn't be prouder of him and think that this experience is going to be an excellent one for him and all the students he'll be leading.

From the bottom of my heart, thank you again for your beautiful comment.

      Tons of hugs!!!

I think the strangest part might be not having Tony there for my birthday in July, as we've been together for all of one another's b-days since 2004. I'm all too familiar with time spent away from one's spouse. One one hand, time apart is never easy, but on the other, I'm always appreciative of the change of pace and for time that is entirely my own. I usually use the time to undertake a big project, be it redecorating or crafting, and to watch plenty of old movies (and do all those things I know aren't exactly my beau's cup of tea). I have no doubt that you will make the best of this time apart as you are such a positive person!

It's neat that you should mention that, because I've already found myself watching more Netflix (we don't have cable) than usual and am excited to launch into some shows this summer that I've not had the time to previously start watching and/or which aren't, as you said, Tony's cup of tea.

Nice that you posed on the bridge of historic streets! And also nice that you could store some pictures for the summer, although your husband won't be there. I know it will be hard and you and the pets will miss him, but time flies... and you will be busy, so it will really fly. I stay more than 6 months far from my partner and I don't like, but it's bearable - of course, each person is different. I hope your health improves and one more point we have in common - I get rides (I don't like driving) and I am glad you will count on your parents to drive you (or the usual taxi-bus-tram). 1. Thank you very much, sweet Lorena. That's awesome to hear you say, because they really are one of my favourite accessories and also one of the best ways to give my wig a different style (and, like most wigs, there's a rather limited number of ways it can be successfully styled).

I love this brooch, too. It marries elegance with cuteness and splash of whimsy as well.

Big hugs & tons of happy Thursday/Friday wishes,

  34. Your outfit reminds me of rainbow sherbet so a very delicious outfit indeed!
My husband also leaves for work for long periods of time ( he's got a possible 8 week stint coming up).As much as I throw myself into a project to pass the time, I'm still not a fan of him leaving as I'm sure is any one who's loved ones leaves for work. To be honest sometimes time stands still and sometimes it flys by. Sometimes I throw my hands in the air when trying to accomplish something without him, and sometimes I dance around like Tom Hanks is Castaway when I've done it all by myself. I also have to remind myself that things could be worse. He could be gone 6 to 8 months like some other people I know need to do and then I think how very short those 8 weeks are.

    1. Rainbow sherbet is soooo good! I haven't had it in years and totally want a big bowlful now. I'm going to see if I can find a brand that's GF this summer. Thank you for the reminder of this scrumptious summer treat, and also for your wonderfully nice comment. I really appreciate you sharing about your own experiences with your husband being away for long periods of time with me. I share your stance that eight weeks (or closer around 11 weeks in our case) is really not that long in the grander scheme of things and that compared to what many couples have had to endure, we should count our lucky stars that's it just 2 - 3 months, not the better part of a year or longer.

So far this week seems to be flying past, which I take to be a good sign. I don't want summer itself to go by in a blink, but it will be nice if it doesn't seem like very long until Tony's home again.

Many heartfelt thanks again. Have a beautiful week!
      ♥ Jessica

*PS* If your DH does leave for work for a while, too, I hope that the time passes quickly for you as well.

    1. Hi sweet Brigid, thank you very much for your lovely compliment and vote of confidence. I'm certain I will as well, it's just a big change of pace, especially this week, with his leaving for the States being such a fresh occurrence. I'm determined to make the best of the summer no matter what though and look forward to all the fun and excitement I hope it holds in store for me.

Big hugs & happy end of spring wishes to you and your lovely sisters,

    1. It so is! You could create a dozen or more outfits around this dress, including partnering it with both mostly white or black - each would take it in such a different direction (black would make this a lot more autumn-y, I think).

Thank you very much for both of your wonderfully nice comments today - big hugs!

  37. This outfit is completely stunning! That peach of a dress looks perfectly divine on you lovely Jessica, the bold coloring really suits you. I'm absolutely drooling over the dress, but wow, you also nailed the accessories! Everything from the shoes, to your brooch and purse are just too fabulous. It's one of those outfits that I'd love to replicate but never could because how on earth you find another dress quite as marvelous?

Anyway, I am sending you my best hugs for the time that Tony is away from you. I haven't had to be apart from my Mister for any where near that length of time, and honestly have no idea how I'd cope if I had too! I hope everything goes well for you both though, and that time slips by until you see him again. Best wishes for everything! ❤

You have done well to choose the accessories of the same color, red is great!
You are a woman really stylish, baby!

    1. They really are reminiscent of that delicious warm weather dessert classic, I agree. And I am beyond craving a bowlful now - too bad we don't have any at the moment. If I can track down some Chapman's (a Canadian frozen dessert brand that makes GF sherbets), I'll have to indulge later this summer.

Speaking of which, happiest first day of the season wishes, my dear friend!

  43. This is easily the best things i've read/seen in a long time. the colors and lines and light are so perfect. The importance of color and light in my everyday life is something i am coming to notice and rely on often these days. How wonderful it is, that a color or mix of them, can be so appealing and spread a little joy into our lives. That blue is perfect. like a spotless, fresh and bold autumn sky, and complementing the red and pink hues perfectly. I can imagine every head passing turned to your wonderful ensemble as you passed, i'm sure you spread a little light into their day as well, for you have in mine :)

    1. You're immensely sweet, dear Abigail, thank you very much. I do definitely find that this dress is one that garners a fair number of comments/compliments - interestingly, from both genders. I've really found - and this could be the basis for a post unto itself, come to think of it - that some vintage looks or even just single items (such as hats) get more compliments/comments from one gender more than the other, but this dress is one that brings lots of nice words from both. Tony really likes it, too, as do I, so it's a win-win all around! :)

Wishing you a joyful, gorgeous, serenity and adventure alike filled summer ahead!

  44. I really have missed out on a lot in the past couple of weeks! My dear, I see why this dress is such a favorite of yours - you look absolutely amazing in it! The colors, of course, are lovely, and give you any number of possible accessory choices, but I can also just see how much you like it. The pleasure is so clear on your face, it's lovely to see.
I'm sorry you're going to be parted from your husband for so long, but I hope that you have a lovely summer regardless. I'll have my fingers crossed that your health holds up and that you get the really enjoy the long and lovely days.

    1. Hi sweet dear, thank you so much for your awesomely nice comment. I really appreciate it and totally agree with you about the versatility of dress. I usually sport it with plenty of (additional) colour, but I want to give it a spin next with all white, black or grey (I'll probably try all of them) and see how it looks with each of those. I suspect that it will be quite different in each colour way.

I'm missing Tony like crazy, but thankfully this first week has already gone by quickly and chatting/IMing/calling daily helps big time. Plus, knowing that he's doing amazing work and getting to enjoy spending time in the States makes me happy and so thankful that he's having this wonderful experience.

Huge hugs & joyful start of summer wishes!

    1. Thank you very much, my sweet friend. It is challenging for sure and I find that the sense of longing (for him) sets in most strongly at night usually, which I think stems from the fact that usually, even when we've been super busy with our respective work days, we'll hang out, chat, maybe watch Netflix, or go out together in the evening and it's a part of each day that I really look forward to. Thankfully though he won't be gone that terribly long and come early September, I'll have my darling hubby home again and all should be back to normal.

Big hugs & tons of happy weekend wishes,
      ♥ Jessica

    2. I agree, I often think the evenings are harder because they are often the time when you sit together and get to connect after a busy day! Mark has been away this week on a work trip to Paris, I am enjoying seeing the photos he is sending me as I would love to go there one day.
