While the title of today's new vintage outfit post might sound like the beginning of a very delectable summer recipe (perhaps a cobbler, buckle, or shortcake – yum!), it in fact refers, as you may have guessed, to the colours in my outfit.

Peach is one of those hues that I love. A lot. But which does not always look the best on me, especially if it has yellow undertones. I need a true peach or one with pink/red undertones usually (which tends to push it into coral or salmon territory), unless the quantity of the colour being worn is modest and it's not not right beside my face in large doses.

This timelessly pretty vintage dress, which I recently purchased from fellow vintage blogger and Etsy shop owner Helen Mae Green's Etsy shop,Lovebirds Vintage, delivers just the right about of peach and is so, so, soooo darling for these fun days of mid-spring.

Another hue that I'm wild about, but don't necessarily wear as often as I'd like, even though it's kinder to me than peach, is royal blue. As such I loved that this outfit - sported at the gorgeous little creek right across the street from our house prior to running errands recently - combined both in hearty doses.

Now that we're finally done with winter, I'm all about spring's palette, straw accessories (like the vintage hat and purse here), light layers, the return of white shoes, and dresses like this that let you pull from their colour scheme while accessorizing, which given that I was in a peachy mood, I did here with my gloves, earrings, and pearl jewelry.

I love this dress! It's likely from the 1970s or 80s, but goodness does it look the mid-century part. Where it not for the presence of serged/overlocked stitching inside, it could pass for the real deal no problem. It's comfy as the day is long, well made, cheerful, and very cute, to boot. Helen had owned and worn it herself for a while, but felt that it didn't work quite as she would have liked for her, so she added it to her Etsy shop and I'm so very glad that she did, because I snapped it up in a heartbeat!

Plaid is perennial favourite of mine, no matter the season, and it's been a while since I last added a frock in this classic pattern to my closet, so I was excited about this lovely vintage offering all the more. I've worn it at least three times now since it arrived and know that it will see plenty of play throughout the these roasty-toasty months. It's so comfortable actually, that were I hopping on a plane or train somewhere, I'd have no qualms wearing it for a lengthy journey (no such plans at present, but it's great to have garments like this in your wardrobe that you can turn to if the need arises).

As you can see here, the sun is out again and I'm one seriously happy camper about that. In fact, knock wood, May has been going a lot better than April in many respects and I have a good feeling about the rest of the spring and summer. If it's as upbeat as the colours at work in this outfit, it stands to be a memorable and highly enjoyable one for sure. Fingers crossed! :)

    1. Thank you sweetly, dear Beverly. I'm very happy as well. Once the sunny season kicks in here, we truly are spoiled by Mother Nature until about late September (sometimes early October, if we're really lucky) and I can hardly wait to take advantage of that beautiful weather for plenty of new photo shoots this year.

Sending oodles of hugs & happy Thursday wishes your way,

  2. Lovely out! I totally agree with your ideas on peach-it's a colour I have avoided like the plague until recently- it seems to the be the colour of the season at the moment, and I agree it is acceptable in small doses.

The way you'v incorporated it into your outfit is very clever :)

    1. Thank you very much, lovely lady. Peach can be so tricky for a lot of us, but as with any potentially tricky hue, the solution is small, strategic doses and that's what I aimed for here. Plus, these gloves don't get near enough wear, so it was high time they saw the (sun)light of day! :)

      Have a fantastic day,

    1. Thank you sweetly, dear Laurence. We've been getting some rain in recent days, too, but that's quite normal this time of the year and will likely rap up nearly until the fall in a matter of days - then it's on to another long, hot, wonderful Okanagan summer.

I hope the coming months are sunny and splendid for you guys as well!

  6. I love this color combination on you! But maybe I'm biased because royal blue is my color (like red is yours). I also love rose earrings -- I have a pair in red and a pair in pink and they're probably my most-worn earrings. Of course, now I'm craving fresh fruit and cream...

    1. Royal blue is swiftly becoming a major favourite of mine, too. I've long liked it (I think I first fell for it when I was a Girl Guide thanks to it being the colour of our uniforms), but in recent months I've come to appreciate it all the more and am actively looking for new royal blue pieces this year (and beyond). In fact, I'm planning another outfit for June that involve it, so you'll get to see your favourite colour again here soon, my dear.

    1. Thank you, honey! It so does, I agree. Seriously, were it not for serging inside, this dress could 100% be from the 1930s, 40s or 50s. It is by far one of the most authentic vintage looking later 20th century frocks I own.

      Have a fabulous Thursday!

  12. What a cute outfit and the colour pallet is lovely. I have nothing peach in my wardrobe, maybe because of the horrendous bridesmaid dress I had to wear as a child, it was alarmingly peach! The overskirt though was a lovely chiffon with rosebuds but it was the awful vibrant peach underskirt which poked down a good few inches beneath the ruched up over skirt which gives me the shivers!

I hope you are well xx

    1. Thank you, my dear. Very good point regarding peach being something of bridal colour, particularly, I'd say, in the 80s and 90s. I wonder if that's part of the reason we don't see more of it - too many scary bridesmaid dress flashbacks for a lot of folks.

      Have a beautiful weekend!

    1. Isn't it interesting how there are certain items, even after years (or decades) of wearing vintage, that escape our wardrobes like that? I have a number myself and find that new entries make it onto the list of MIA pieces with each passing year, as my style changes subtly and/or I develop a new found interest in a particular type of garment or accessory. I hope that you're able to find a great natural straw hat and bag soon (I had one such hat in my shop, but it sold, perhaps not surprisingly given the season, a few days ago).

I also love peach and all shades of blue, and I feel I could wear this lovely dress every day! I absolutely love its shape and colours. I recently retrieved vintage clothes at my parent's house, adjusted some to my size and now wear them at work! Among those clothes a nice 1970s navy blue dress quite similar to yours, I wore it for the first time recently and loved it!

  31. Jessica, I love, love, love that color combination. And it does look to be 40s or very early 50s. Sergers have actually been in use since the 1920s and I have owned casual cotton dresses from the 1940s with serged seams. Also that fabric covered buckle is something you see on older vintage clothing as well. So it is possible that it is older than you think. Either way, it is a super darling dress!!! 1. Hi Theresa, thank you very much for your lovely comment and for sharing that link. The Vintage Fashion Guild is a truly unending source of invaluable information. I've been turning to their resources for years now and always enjoy learning more on any topic they write about.

Knowing that serging, while not as common, does pre-date the 50s, made me pause even more on dating this piece and I'm still not completely convinced as to its birthday, so to speak. The fabric is in great shape and feels newer than, say, a 30s, 40s, o4 50 dress, but I'm not ruling it out entirely at all. If it is a latter piece, be it 60s, 70s or 80s, I think it might have been made with a vintage sewing pattern, because it's that authentically detailed and fitted.

Many thanks again & have a beautiful weekend,

    1. You're so very sweet, my dear friend. Thank you!!! Isn't the wee gold buckle (it's plastic, not metal - all the better for those who are allergic to nickel, which is commonly found in buckles and many other fashion elements involving metal) a great touch? I love that it instantly sets the metal choice for an outfit and can then be picked up, if so desired, in things like belt buckles, purse hardware, and jewelry.

Honestly, on most days, if I'm well enough to be dressed, and especially if I'm just staying home or running basic errands, no matter the season, there's a very good chance I have a shirtwaist dress on. They're comfy as a cloud, a cinch to dress up or down, and not too hard to find (especially online) still to this day (in vintage form, I mean). Plus, they just look so pulled together right off the bat, so it's impossible for me not to adore them.

    1. Hi sweet dear, thank you very much for your great comment. Absolutely! I'm a massive proponent of 1970s and 80s does 1940s and 50s dresses and other garments (see this post for more on this love: http://www.chronicallyvintage.com/2013/10/why-i-love-and-wear-1980s-does-40s-and.html) and adore that a lot of the time, these frocks are more affordable and often more durable, but no less attractive or classic looking than their mid-century peers. I could't imagine my wardrobe at this point without its selection of 80s does 40s and 50s garments. I'd certainly have a lot less shirtwaist dresses if it were to vanish (scary thought!).

  43. you look beautiful as always! :) i never really find myself wearing peach or nude shades because i'm so pale sometimes when i've tried clothes on in those colours they look too close to my skin tone and it doesn't look right, but in small doses and/or with enough warmth behind it to push it into coral then it's just fine, and those gloves are a perfect example. also for some reason i really don't own much in royal blue, though it looks good on just about everyone i've seen! i tend to stick to navy or pale blue but it'd be nice to add some bright blue into my wardrobe one of these days.

  48. The dress looks super on you. This is such a pretty, everyday outfit, I really like how you have accessorised it. Nice to see plaid in a spring colour way and to be reminded that it doesn't just have to be for winter wear.

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Kate. True, granted plaid is pretty much the unofficial official pattern of Canada (if such were an actual thing), but so often plaid is relegated to the colder half the year, which is a shame, because it really is a pattern for all seasons. I usually bring out my lighter ones like this dress (and a beloved purple and white plaid top) now, as they're just as easygoing as gingham (a more common summer staple). I'd totally rock a plaid swimsuit even, if I found a cute vintage or vintage looking one. :)

I hope you're having a great week, honey. Big hugs from sometimes sunny, sometimes rainy Penticton.

  49. Love the color palette of this outfit, and that's one lovely vintage dress. Also loving the accessories, especially the fine details of the gloves and your dainty jewelry. Looking fabulously gorgeous, like always. Hope you get some more of the warmer weather <3.

  50. This dress fits so nicely, shows your waist and you've matched it subtly to perfection.

  51. You have done it again, dear. I would never have paired blue and peach, I don't even like peach, but seeing you styling it - wow! I simply love it. :) What a cute dress, and I adore your straw accessories, and your peach gloves. And you have a new lipstick colour! I have been thinking about if I can wish for an outfit post? I would love to see how you look in your everyday style. When you just get out of bed and throw something on in the morning to work on e.g. your shop or blogging. It was just an idea, and I am sure you can inspire so many that would just hop into a pair of yoga pants and an old tee. :)

    1. You're so sweet and kind to me, dear Sanne, thank you very much for your wonderfully nice comments, compliments, and question/request, too, on this post.

Honestly, due to my health, if I'm at home and not having people over to visit, chances are, I'm in my pajamas or some contemporary loungewear, or perhaps a loose fitting shirtwaist dress. That said, if I am feeling well enough to get dressed more extensively that day, an outfit like this (minus the hat and gloves indoors) would be a perfect representation of my daily attire. It's comfy, classic, feminine, and fun - just as I adore my outfits to be as often as possible. :)

Great eye! This is actually an old shade. So old, that I don't know if MAC makes it any more (I looked for it on their Canadian site a couple of weeks ago and didn't see it there). I think I got it in 2010, but I haven't worn it much and it's still in good shape (aka, none of those telltale old makeup funky odours or colour changes), so I figured a peach outfit would be the perfect place to give it a spin. I forgot how nice it was and will certainly be wearing it more often now, especially during the summer months.

All that said, I did however recently purchase a new lippy shade (also from MAC - what can I say, I love them to bits and I've never run into gluten issues with their lipsticks, which is so important!), and will be debuting it here in the near future.

Thank you much for all of your fantastic comments today. Huge hugs!

    1. You are seriously making me blush over here, honey, thank you soooo much!!! I adore the fit of this dress. It's not only flattering, but mind-blowingly comfortable (like, pajama level comfy). At the risk of sounding like a broken record, if I was a sewer, I would replicate its design in a heartbeat!

Your comment put a huge smile on my face. Thank you again so much! I hope that you're doing well and enjoying a lovely second of the spring.

      Huge hugs,
      ♥ Jessica

    1. Thank you very much, honey! I am still completely smitten with this dress. It's become one of my most frequently worn this year and I love that it's proving to be very cool and equally comfy still now that we're into the dog days of summer.

Big hugs & tons of happy weekend wishes,
      ♥ Jessica
