Every cold weather season, I vow to myself that I will wear the classic combination of a dress and a blazer/suit jacket more often, then almost always promptly forget, burying myself in a sea of cardigans, turtlenecks, sweaters, and skirts or trousers + blazers instead. This year though, I've been working especially hard to remember to sport this stylish pairing and kicked off the chilly season by doing so with the outfit snaps above, which were taken on the second to last Saturday in November.

That was a jam packed busy day, let me tell you! Not only was it the day before we headed off to Vancouver for a lovely spur of the moment work related getaway, but that afternoon I also had the great pleasure of going to see my lovely online friend and published novelist Elinor Florence (whom you may remember from this 2014 interview + giveaway post that we shared here on my blog) speak in person at our town's public library.

Elinor let me know well in advance of her speaking date that she would be headed through Penticton to give a presentation on both her book and some of the fascinating Canadian history surrounding the time frame (WW2) that it centers on, and I instantly set about trying to ensure that I could attend.

Luckily my health was in a cooperative mood that day and I was indeed able to make a beeline for the Penticton Public Library on November 21st and watch Elinor give a very, very lovely, informative talk and slide presentation on those very topics (which also included photos and stores about her own childhood and parents in relation to the subject matter at hand).

Elinor's novel (her first to date) is set in the 1940s, so I knew that I wanted an outfit that looked the part and to that end, opted to for the above mentioned dress (in this case a lovely dark dusty rose hued 1980s does 1940s/50s shirtwaist dress) and blazer combo. To that duo, I added a 1930s/40s black felt hat, 1940s telephone cord bag, and a smattering of complimentary accessories.

The talk lasted for about an hour and had a really nice turnout. After she had finished presenting, Elinor set aside a bit of time to sell and sign copies of her fantastic novel, A Bird's Eye View, and to chat with audience members as well.

Once the crowd had largely dissipated, Tony and I made our way over to formally introduce ourselves (Elinor and I had been talking online for the better part of a couple of years, but this was our first in-person meeting) where we shared a few minutes of enjoyable conversation, during which Tony grabbed a few quick cell phone photos to further help commemorate the day (including the two above).

As I've said here before many a time, Penticton is not exactly chock-a-block full of vintage (let alone WW2) related events, for I'm all the more grateful that I had the opportunity to see Elinor's engaging talk and to meet a fellow British Columbia with an unending passion for the past.

Whether here in the Okanagan or in the small East Kootney town of Invermere that Elinor calls home, I really hope that we get a chance to hang out again one day. And if we do, chances are you can bank on another photo filled post like today's following close on its heels. :)

  1. Both of you ladies: TWO THUMBS UP!
You are a lucky one, Jessica.
And, you are among those active individuals (despite of ALL the drama in your life), so no wonder you have had a "few minutes of enjoyable conversation" with the author! That is great.
Ohhh - to admit is hard. I have been lazy this past month or even more. After work load is done, I prefer to take the rest of the day off and just lounge (yeah, when the weather allows, I do take Ĺ arka for a walk). Other than walking and reading, there's just some sewing done - but I must mingle more.
    Much more.
People will forget my face (except those few friends I do visit). I must become more socially active, and force myself, so to say "If JESS ca do it - you can, too!". :)

    Do inspire me.
..and make me move out the door and into world. :)

I definitely was lucky to get to meet Elinor. Her passion for the past knows no bounds and to her speak about certain elements of that love in person was a true honour.

Many hugs and again, truly, thank you.

  2. It's so nice when you get to meet folks in person that you admire. She's adorable in her little hat, too! I love this outfit on you - love the two different pink shades matched together. I also forget blazers all the time!!! Why is that??

    1. Thank you sweetly, dear gal. Very good question! Perhaps because we tend to reach for cardigans far more often? I'm good with partnering blazers and trousers or skirts, but with dresses, as touched on above, I can go whole seasons (or even years) without remembering to wear them together. Perhaps if more of post snaps, like these, of ourselves in them we'll inspire and remind our fellow vintage wearers of just how lovely the combination is.

Big hugs & happy mid-January wishes,

There are so few of us vintage wearers/bloggers (and in her case, authors) in Canada, let alone in BC, so getting the chance to interact with those that do exist is an almost surreal-y cool - and incredibly memorable - experience.

I always love how you bring all of your colours together - and the corded bag and other monochrome touches with the shades of fuschia is just so lovely. 1. It really, really is, especially during these icy winter months. I love that a blazer over a dress can usually do the trick for quick "in and out" errand running, too, if you're expose to elements is to be brief and one has a hearty constitution. That way, you can dash into the store and not be sweating buckets (and/or being encumbered) due to a heavy winter coat. Definite win-win, and stylish as all get out to boot. :)

Like you I've been wanting to add suit jackets to my wardrobe but when ever I walk into a thrift store all set to buy a suit jacket I become so over whelmed and don't know where to began as nothing so far screams out to be worn by me. Fingers crossed before the winter is over I will add a suit jacket to my collection.

    1. What an awesomely lovely compliment, thank you so much. Vintage hats are an incredible wardrobe element and one that I hope you'll enjoy sporting every bit as much as I do.

Granted such will vary from body type to body type, but in general, my top tips for thrifting (or otherwise buying) blazers, be they vintage or modern, is to look for classic silhouettes and colours (so much easier to mix and match with items that are already in your closet), try to find ones that fit really well in the shoulders (a fairly hard place to have most blazers tailored, if need be - especially if they're full lined), that don't have garish buttons that could be hard to weave into the look of a total outfit, that are at least slightly fitted to highlight your shape, and that give off an instant sense of vintage style-ness even on the hanger. Best of luck with your hunt!

    1. Thank you very much, honey. I'm delighted to know that I helped turn you on to a new way to sport a blazer. I think that photographing this outfit really did the trick for me because I'm happy to report that I've (finally!) been pairing blazers and dresses together on a regular basis ever since.

Big hugs & happy Thursday wishes,
      ♥ Jessica

  41. How wonderful that you got to meet Elinor in person and I can only imagine that her talk would have been fascinating. I've read her novel myself and thoroughly enjoyed it, as I do her blog.

I love both of your outfits and your hat is just divine!

    1. Elinor's blog is such a history rich delight. I adore it as well and try to catch every fascinating post that she shares there.

Thank you so much! I just adore this hat as well. It's a bit time worn, but still intact and with TLC, I suspect I'll get many more years of enjoyment out of it.

Oodles of hugs, my lovely friend!

  42. You look so lovely. I love how you pair the burgundy blazer with a pink dress, and how your lipstick precisely matches your blazer. The telephone cord purse is fabulous. And how nice to meet an online friend IRL, and hear her speech about her book. I wish I could meet you in person, but one never knows. Have a lovely day, dear. :) PS: I ADORE the first photo with your charming teeth smile, do tell Tony.

    1. Thank you sweetly, dear Sanne. I really hope that we get a chance to meet in person one day, too. I definitely want to see (much!) more of Europe, definitely including Denmark, so a "face-to-face" could possibly happen at some point (I get giddy with happiness just thinking about it!).

I will definitely pass your lovely compliment on to Tony. Thank you! He has quickly become quite the master of capturing angles that hide the worst issues with my teeth and I wholeheartedly appreciate it.

Many hugs & joyful weekend wishes,
      ♥ Jessica
