Celebrate Canada Day with a scrumptious 1950s maple syrup and bacon French toast sandwich

To be perfectly clear up front, today's vintage recipe is not exactly the world's healthiest one, but it's the sort of easy-peasy, deeply appealing dish that's warranted in the name of great celebrations and holidays, and so as we barrel towards Canada Day on July 1st, it seemed like the most fitting time of the year to share it with you.

Less a detailed recipe, as an add featuring a thoroughly delicious way to use maple syrup, this 1950s breakfast idea sees crisp slices of bacon sandwiched between two slices of homemade French toast, all of which is doused liberally in maple syrup.

Yep, told you it wasn't exactly as healthy as an apple. That's ok though, most of us can squeeze a special meal into our lives every once in a blue moon, and if you're like me, you tend to hold onto those kinds of treats for the most important days of the years.

Not the least of which, I'm sure, is because I'm a born and breed Canadian, I positively adore Canada Day! As a youngster it fell right after the school year ended and ten days before my birthday, making it the absolute marker of the start of summer vacation. There on July 1st with so much of the season still ahead of us, Canada Day made it seem, if only as briefly as a celebratory firework's burst of luminous colour, that summer was going to last forever.

As we'd gather for a picnic, backyard barbeque or beach party, donned in red and white, often with maple leaves painted on our cheeks, there was an unmistakable sense of patriotic pride, enthusiasm, and joy that spread like wildfire across the population, and which - then as now - I could never get enough.

We sorely lack holidays in this country, if you ask me, and loving special events as I do, it's no wonder that July 1st has always been one of my favourite holidays of the year. Whether with a breakfast such as this fabulously tasty 1950s one, or a plethora of other wholeheartedly Canadian culinary options (salmon steaks, buffalo burgers, butter tarts, Nanaimo bars, Saskatoon berry jam, Okanagan peach pie - you name it!), I always go to town (or sea, farm, orchard, etc!) in the kitchen for this marvelous summer celebration.

  1. Wow that is just wow. My brother and sister would probably love this recipe. They love dipping their sausage in syrup. I can't do it. I'd feel really grossed out.

  2. Happy Canada Day (well, a bit early)! I hope you have a great weekend. I am actually going to be making my way back up to Montreal from Boston Friday 'til Monday night, and I'm so excited to be able to be up for the holiday. This looks like something the (both male) former roommates I'm staying with would scarf with enthusiasm, so maybe...?

    I think that I can fit this lovely one into my Canada Day menu! It cant hurt once a year!

    1. Hi fellow July born gal, how completely cool that our birthdays are back to back (I'm July 10th). Once a year really can't hurt in the long run...even twice a year, if you get a wild craving for bacon, say, around December and just have to whip up a batch half way until next Canada Day :)

  4. I'm a big fan of Canada. I work for a Canadian family run buisness and I have many Canadian friends. I'm so sad to say I have never been myself but i'm hoping that will change next year.I think it's great that you have a special day to celebrate such a lovely and beautiful country. Hope you have a wonderful time and even to vegetarian that sandwich looks appealing! Anything with Maple Syrup looks appealing to me. xx

    1. I agree, making this sandwich vegetarian wouldn't take away from it's spirit in the least. You could even go vegan, if you had a good vegan French toast recipe on hand and (of course) dropped the pork bacon.

      I really hope you get to visit Canada one day, dear girl, there are so many fantastic corners, big and small, to explore, and even if one traveled night and day for a lifetime, there would still be countless places and sights to visit and take in. I've been to parts of five different provinces (and have lived in three of those), and hope to see all ten (and the three territories, too, of course) in my lifetime, hopefully returning to some more than once.

  6. Is Canada day equivalent to America's celebration of Independence Day? I don't know a lot about Canada, though I am a huge Anne Shirley fan, that's about the extent of my knowledge.

    1. Hi Sean, great question! Canada Day is somewhat akin to the 4th of July in America (both are marked by many with things such as fireworks displays and yummy barbeque feasts), but is not a carbon copy by any means. It's an annual celebration of the date, back in 1867, when the founding provinces of Canada joined forces to officially become the nation of Canada.   10. I have a friend who is coming to visit the weekend after Canada Day, and he LOVES bacon, so I was going to surprise him with a bacon filled meal, and I can't wait to add this to the menu! Thanks for the idea!
