Corset Story review and giveaway

While February might be seen by many as the most romantic month of the year by many, and indeed there's no denying its connections to all things amour, since 2004, October has held the title of the most romantic month of the year for me. The reason for this, as you may be wondering, is that it just happens to house mine and Tony’s wedding anniversary.

Nearly eight years ago, in an incredibly small, intimate (less than ten people) ceremony held in my parent's living room, Tony and I were married after a whirlwind courtship of about seven months. Skip ahead nearly a decade and we're every bit - and more - in love and happy with our decision to be wed today. In the celebration of this joyful event, I'm happy to announce that I have a fantastic giveaway to offer all of you.

When one thinks of romantic garments, few come to mind quicker - or with more timelessness behind it - than the corset. Though their popularity has certainly waxed and waned over the centuries, for hundreds of years corsets have been one of the most commonplace elements of a woman's underpinings.

Though corsets began to fall out of widespread us as the Edwardian era drew to a close and the 1920s ushered in a whole new mode of fashion, and have never regained their widespread use to the same degree that they did in centuries past, they have certainly never fallen completely out of use or favour either (certainly corsets or girdles with lacing were virtually required wearing for ladies looking to get the much beloved post-WW2 wasp waist and ultra shapely hourglass figures).

Today however corsets are no longer just viewed (primarily) as a foundation garment or something worn by women in the showgirl and burlesque industries, indeed corsets can be, and are, worn as part of daywear, cosplay, fancy dress party outfits, bedroom attire, and of course, by some still, for their original intended waistline shirking purposes.

Loving historical fashions of all types as I do, I've been drawn to corsets since I was a little girl (who was mildly obsessed with the Victorians), yet can honestly say I never owned one until this fall.

Recently I was contacted by the lovely folks at corsetstory.com who were curious to know if I'd be interested in reviewing one of their fashion corsets. I jumped at the chance at about the speed of light and set about picking my corset (I went with the classily pretty Victorian Cream Corset) from amongst their thoroughly terrific array of offerings.

Once selected, the corset was mailed to me promptly and securely, and the sizing was just as stated (Fashion Corset has a handy sizing chart that makes picking the right size a breeze), which is always hugely appreciated.

Unlike a tradition steal or heavily boned corset, fashion corsets are not intended or designed to whittle inches off of your figure, instead they provide the general look of a classic corset, but offer the wearer a lot of flexibility in terms of how long they can comfortably wear the corset, what they can pair it with, and how tight they want to do the laces up in the back.

Having never worn a boned (aka, waist training) corset before, I cannot compare the two, but I can tell you that the corset I received is well made, a cinch to put on (I'm lucky enough to be able to touch anywhere on my own back, so with a little work I was able to lace it tightly on my own), and breath-takingly beautiful in person.

As few gals outside of the entertainment field wore corsets as outer wear during the mid-twentieth century, for my corset debut, I didn't try go for an inherently 40s or 50s look. If anything, it was cancan dancers of the late Victorian and early Edwardian eras that I most had in mind when I was putting together my look.

Again though, my outfit was not intended in the least to channel a specific time period, but instead to be feminine, beguiling (but not too revealing - modesty is always a must for me when in public or on camera), and thoroughly romantic. Tony assures me that my finished costume certainly hit the mark in that regard!

In addition to showing you the gorgeous corset I received from Corset Story, you also get to see some of our burgundy walled master bedroom for the first time, my partially unclothed shoulders, and a one very lopsided shot of my chest that was caused by the position I was leaning in while on our bed.

I adored the feeling of wearing this corset, it hugged me gently, felt very comfortable, and certainly conjured up thoughts of days - and fashions - long gone.

While it's not the kind of piece I'll be sporting every day, it's certainly not going to be relegated to the back of a drawer either. I could easily see putting this atop a classic button down blouse - or even a long peasant style top - and partnering it with a pencil skirt or two piece skirt suit for a captivating daywear look. Of course, it also lends itself sublimely to all manner of Halloween costumes - from a fairy princess to a wild west saloon girl - just as all of the items that Corset Story offers up do.

Whether you own a dozen corsets already or nary a one, but have always wanted to, there's something for just about everyone on amongst Corset Story's products, and today I'm thrilled to let you know that one lucky winner has the chance to pick the Fashion Corset of their choice from Corset Story.

How to enter:

1.) Go to Corset Story's Fashion Corset section and select the fashion corset (please note, only fashion corsets are eligible as the prize for this giveaway) that you like best, then let me know which one you picked and why you like it in the comment section of this post.

For up to four more additional entries:

2.) Like Corset Story on Facebook.

3.) Tweet about this giveaway on Twitter, including @corsetsUK and a link back to this post in your tweet (include a link to tweet in your comment).

4.) Pin any of the photos in this post, directly from this post itself, to any Pinterest board you'd like (include a link back to the pin in your comment).

5.) Be a Google Connect Friend follower of this blog (let me know what name/alias you're following Chronically vintage with in the comment section).

***Please be sure that you leave a separate comment for each entry method that you enter with, this way you increase your odds of winning because you have multiple entries.***

As per the request of the company, this giveaway is open to readers from around the world, excluding India and the continent of Africa. Participants from all other locations are permitted.

This contest will run from today until Thursday October 11, 2012 at 11:59 PST, with the winner being drawn by use of a random number generator the next day. The winner will be contacted by email and/or announced here on Chronically Vintage shortly thereafter.

I frequently receive offers for products to review and/or giveaway, but am quite selective in what I choose, as the item needs to have a certain vintage or vintage appropriate feeling to it in most circumstances.

I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt that I felt Corset Story's offerings held just that. Though Corset Story’s products are modern garments, the ageless quality that corsets posses ensures my new fashion corset fits right at home in my day-to-day vintage wardrobe, where it will definitely be making a showing again on October 14th when Tony and I toast to eight resplendent years together.

Best of luck to everyone who enters this giveaway - I can't wait to hear about which fashion corset you'd love to win!

  1. You look amazing! Wow! I was a bit surprised when I went to the website and saw how affordable they are. I love the black and white polka dotted one - it goes with the image of myself that exists in my head. I don't have the coloring to pull off what you have on. You look classic. I would look like a zombie. And - thank you for the chicken pot pie recipe yesterday. My family and I were just talking about making one!

    1. i used to have good experience with this website but the last one was innacceptable

in the 20 of june, i've commendes 2 corsets on sale, said that it was sent.
2 days after i recieved a note about canadian fees, i awnser that i didn't mind.
2 weeks after, as the corsets were supposed to arrive, i ask the customer service what was hapenning and they told me it wasn't sent yet because i didn't sent the "ok " note about canadian fees. so i sent it again and "oops" the corset you orderes is not more expensive that it was so they cancelled the order and asked me to choose another one even tough the corset was still on the website but more expensive. i would have paid it but since im a student and i already was insulted of the service i asked for a refund... end up they asked me for my pay pal account for a refund and since i don't have one i was forced to choose another corcet under 20$ ( were all large and i do small) i commend one of thiers large corset and they sent the order to the mall on today, we are the 15 of july, im in this bullhit for 25 days now and i have to wait another 5 to 14 days to revieve my corset AND pay additional fees

pure bullshit, never order anything from them

    2. Dear Karine,

I'm sincerely sorry to hear about the troubles that you encountered while ordering from Corset Story. I had only the most pleasant and professional experiences in dealing with them for this post, and have not ordered or dealt with them since, so all is well with Corset Story in my books. I fully understand the kinds of situations that you described however, and have found myself in similar ones with various companies over the years (most recently, with the website eShakti last December - though, I should say, I've had further dealings with them since and things have been much better). Buying clothing online is always a gamble, and unfortunately sometimes we lose. Again, I'm sorry that such happened to you with Corset Story and appreciate that you shared your experience here. Fingers crossed that you have better luck with any and all other websites you order from in the future.

      ♥ Jessica

  2. Hello Jessica,

First off - Happy weeks and days up to that special day and throughout the coming year!

    What a generous offer!

Your bedspread of lovely roses complements your corset perfectly, a very lovely choice.

Well, I have looked over the Fashion Corsets, and my choice would be: A3000 - Black Corset Top
I like the way the dainty lace extends over the top and around the lower edge of the corset, very elegant. Oh, yes, I almost forgot...that would be in size 8.

    Thanks for holding the giveaway.

  3. Hello Jessica,

Signed into my other account... I wanted to respond to the comment that you left for me at "Women Then".

~about that lovely coat your were gushing over, it would be a wonderful find!

I had a 1950s dark navy blue coat much like this one when I was 15, but the fabric was different... a light-weight, fabric with a bit of a sheen to it.

  4. I like the Black Sweetheart Corset. It's my favorite out of them all because of the shape and design. I love the shape of the bust. Also, the little details, like the bow and frills on the edges.

  6. Loving the underbust corset in red brocade- http://www.corset-story.com/a3328-red-brocade-pattern-underbust.html Because I am quite small busted I think the effect of under the bust would be more flattering... would look great with a simple white peasant blouse!

  12. It's funny that you posted this today; my friend and I were ooh-ing and ahh-ing over the Corset Story site a week or two ago. I tried to make one recently to go with my Halloween costume, and I now have a whole new respect for people who make corsets by hand - it's NOT easy! Anyway, yours looks gorgeous on you. I'm interested to see how you incorporate it into outfits in the future.

If I could choose, I'd go with this black embroidered one (http://www.corset-story.com/a3308-dark-grey-corset-with-feather-embroidery.html) and hope for lots of costumed events in my life so I could wear it many times!

  13. Jessica....thank you for reviewing this company's lovely corsets. I'm going to be browsing for hours. I would love to win A2039 Silver corset; its so lovely.

I love corsets, but haven't het had the courage to wear one in public as part of an outfit; only costumes. The one corset I do have has made the rounds in many different costume iterations. I think the one I chose would be versatile and I would create an outfit around it.

The corset you modeled is so perfect for you! Every picture is lovely and I'm glad that you gave us a peek at the beautiful lacing on the back.

  14. Oh my gosh! What a great post and how beautiful are all of those corsets?
In the end, I plumped for the black and white corset number A3115. It's got a bit of a 'I've run away to the circus' thing going on and had I been the bareback rider I wanted to be, I'd wear that!

  15. Jessica you look fabulous:)) The corset look has a certain wild west girl quality to it:) Maybe you'll be showing us the can can next? Love it:)) I'm glad it's more comfortable than a bone corset. I have been wanting to try a vintage one but I've heard of all the classic tales of how uncomfortable they are.

  16. Hello Jessica!

Firstly, I wished to remark upon your lovely and ladylike choice of corset. In the past I have worn more traditional, boned corsets (as undergarments) but over time they've become impractical with my office job and my active life chasing after three large, energetic dogs.

Secondly, I took some time to peruse the Corset Story website and was immediately drawn to the dark blue corset with fabric rosettes and pleated trim. It's certainly more dramatic than the utilitarian undergarments I used to wear and I think that is part of the appeal! http://www.corset-story.com/a3351-blue-corset-with-floral-detail.html

Thank you so much for both the charming giveaway and for your dedicated blogging... each post brightens my otherwise busy and often tedious work-days. :)

I have yet to really try a corset. I wore one once, with the help of a friend, but got light headed half way through the night. I guess I should learn how to properly wear one. :)

  41. I think I would choose this one:
    http://www.corset-story.com/red-corset-with-black-lace-details-a3015.html

Because red is a flattering color on me, while black and white are NOT (much to my black-loving chagrin). I always fancied that black would be accenting to my pale skin, giving me a 'snow white' look, but no---upon getting my color analysis done, turns out that black is a huge no-no. Just like white. *pout*I don't know whether the black lace on this corset would make it oulawed for me, but it's the prettiest one on there that I think is close to my color pallette. :D

Prices have definatley changed, I paid about 300 for mine in a Chicago boutique, because of it's price I incorporated that corset into about 5 different Halloween costumes to get my moneys worth. PS. you've got to lace that one up tighter and show off your little waste.

  94. My fave? A3304 - Black and Nude Coloured Chiffon Style Corset with Lace Panel It carries an aura of being a genuine undergarment, something hidden away to be unwrapped, and there is something so sensual and erotic about that.

  110. I picked the A3091 - Underbust Corset. I like it the best because I enjoy going to Rocky Horror Picture Show-themed events and believe this one to be most appropriate to the theme :D

  115. Oh wowzer! These photos do have a sensual quality to them, your wallpaper was the perfect backdrop to this ensemble. I do love the corset choice, it does remind me of a sort of Edwardian look, and I think that suits you to perfection.

You should get one of these pics framed and put on your wall at home!!

    1. Hi sweet dear, it was wonderfully nice of you to come find this post of mine when I mentioned on your recent one that I'd also worked with Corset Story. I really enjoyed partnering with them and found their customer service team to be great - much like this fashion corset themselves.

That's not a bad idea at all - and I'm sure it would find favour with the mister! :) Agreed, there is a bit of an Edwardian vibe going on here. I didn't really style it in after any specific decade though - I just needed a way to model the corset but still remain relatively dressed. I adore how you styled yours in your post. It made me think that one day I should sport mine under a suit with a wee bit poking out from the of the jacket.

Thank you for your great comment - have a beautiful Sunday!
      ♥ Jessica
