If you've been reading this blog for any amount of time, chances are you will have picked up on the fact that I'm not exactly wild about so-called fashion rules. That isn’t to say that I don't think there is merit to applying certain principles to how you dress, but I'm not a fan of woefully outdated concepts that bar the wearing of particular colour pairings, for example, and absolutely love it when I get the chance to quash one of those for, I hope, good (at least amongst my audience).

Today's vintage outfit post highlights what I wore recently on the very first day of spring (I know, you wouldn't necessarily know that it was such based on the overcast, windy, nearly rainy weather) and stars none other than the serene colour palette of green and blue - royal blue, to be exact in this case.

I've always adored these two colours together and wear them many times throughout the year. While few people bat an eye if someone sports blue jeans and a green shirt, there is an endearing concept (much as with brown and black) that one should not wear blue and green together lest they clash (due to being so similar in tone).

Just exactly where and when this concept came amount is up for debate. Some feel that colours that touch on the colour wheel are best left out of the same outfit, but you're doing yourself a great disservice if you following this notion, which is far less rigidly enforced for other similar pairs like orange and yellow or blue and purple.

At the end of the day, what matters far more than a completely arbitrary rule is how well a colour, or colour combo, as the case may be, looks on you personally. If you enjoy blue and green together (and eschew the old notion that states they should never be seen together), then rock them - especially during spring and summer, when they suit the vibrancy of the world around us so superbly.

I opted to usher in spring with this very palette and made the star of the show this elegantly beautiful mid-century vintage style Nancy V-Neck Dress from the terrific Australian clothing e-tailer 1950s Glam.

A new and exciting player on the vintage reproduction and pinup girl clothing scene, 1950s Glam was recently launched in Sydney by two ladies who adore the classic glamour of Old Hollywood and wanted to bring more of such to the online fashion world.

1950s Glam recently contacted me about working together and after I scoped out their site - which, I should mention, recently got some splendid revamping and saw the addition of an even greater number of products on offer - I agreed immediately. At present, they're focusing on vintage and pinup style dresses, which suits me just fine, as I'm one of those gals who can never, have too many timelessly pretty frocks in their closet.

I opted for the Nancy dress in the hue that I did because I'm both wild about this colour and also because I didn't, prior to it, have any solid royal blue dresses and had been wanting to change that for ages. My order was securely packaged in a sturdy flat plastic mailing envelope (with the dress itself being further protected by clear plastic packaging inside) and arrived in a very reasonable amount of time to this side of the world.

Made from a wonderfully comfortable, light to medium weight polyester - which is, at least for this time of the year - very breathable, this elegant mid-century style frock sports a becoming v-neckline, pleated bust, high waisted full skirt, and a hem that will hit many wearers at or below the knee (I'm just barely 5'2", for a sense of scale from a height perspective, and this dress comes a little past my knees).

I found navigating 1950s Glam's website and listings to be a breeze. Each listing includes a clear, easy to understand size chart and key details about the garment itself.

In addition, while I received this sophisticated dress for gratis (thank you so much for this great gift, ladies, I'm in love with it!), if you wish to order anything at all from their online shop, 1950s Glam not only provides free worldwide shipping on all orders, but provides a 10% off coupon code to put towards your first order when you signup for their newsletter (that will inform you of sales and special offers).

Their prices are entirely reasonable in the vintage reproduction/rockabilly/pinup girl clothing online marketplace of 2016 and when you factor in the free worldwide shipping, they become even more so.

I'm very impressed with this comfortable, chic, delightfully pretty royal blue dress (which I just know will get ample year round wear thanks to its solid colour and awesome mid-century design) and definitely expect that I'll be ordering from them in the future.

And speaking of 1950s Glam and the future, keep your eyes peeled here later in the spring, as I'm going to be holding a truly awesome giveaway with this company in June that will provide one lucky winner the chance to land any dress (seriously!) that they wish from this new vintage style clothing website's completely covetable inventory.

As touched on in Monday's post, flare-ups with some of my chronic medical conditions in recent weeks has meant that I've only been able to leave the house twice in more than six weeks. Luckily, one of those days was the first one of spring and though the weather wasn't all that specular, it wasn't snowing - nor was so cold that a jacket was a must when shooting near the water, as we did that day down at the beach in the nearby community of Okanagan Falls.

Thankfully this week has been smoother for me on the health front and I hope to make up for lost time on the outfit shoot front this coming weekend, especially since the weather has perked up a lot and we're now experiencing spring in all of its wondrous beauty - very much including plenty of blue skies and fresh green grass.

And you know, it is for that reason - that blue and green are Mother Nature's favourite colour pairing - above all else that I will always enjoy, appreciate, and periodically wear these two tranquil hues in the same ensemble.

If you're a fan, I highly encourage you to do the same. There's a shade of each out there for just about everyone under the the sun and chances are, they'll look breathtaking together on you!

Big time! Fashion is at its best when one marches to the beat of their own drum.

  3. Hi Jessica. This dress is such a wonderfully vivid shade of blue, it suits you beautifully! I appreciate your sentiments on non-traditional colour matches, I enjoy how you have incorporated green with blue and I admit to often pairing brown with black! I'm sorry to hear you have been feeling unwell of late, I hope you feel better soon and you can enjoy Spring.

    1. Thank you so much, lovely lady. Three huge cheers, as I'm finally getting over these recent flare-ups this week. I'm really thankful about that and about the fact that I didn't miss too much of the spring due to them. If one has to be bedridden, winter is a good time for it! ;)

Black and brown are brilliant together. I'm heading out later today and the outfit I have planned with incorporate both of those colours in it.

Many thanks again. I hope that you're having a sunny, terrific week.

    1. Hear, hear! That's my mantra, too - big time. I had a lot of these so-called fashion rules drilled into my head at a young age, but they always felt way to confining for my tastes and I started eschewing them as soon as I could.

Thank you very much, honey. I'm really happy to report that I'm doing considerably better on the health front so far this week - so much so in fact that Tony and I have planned a fun little weekend getaway to celebrate both early spring and my flare-ups having calmed down at the moment. So looking forward to getting out of town for a little while.

    1. Yes, that is another one that many people mistakenly think can't work well together, yet those colours are amazing in the same outfit. I especially like baby or sky blue and black, but often sport turquoise, aqua, teal, or navy with black as well. They're very harmonious and have a great nighttime sky quality to them.

Big hugs & many thanks for your lovely comment,

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Kate. I'm wildly anti-fashion rule as well. A lot of these antiquated notions were drilled into my head when I was growing up, but none of them sit right with me. From white after Labour day to blue + green together, as shown here, if I want to wear something, I'm going to take advantage of the freedom that I have as adult and just do so. It's fantastic that you feel the same way, too.

You are truly a caring, kindhearted person and I hope that I'll be able to brighten your day by sharing that I'm presently doing a lot better on the health front this month. I've long noticed (though can't say for sure why such is the case) that I often get hit with flare-ups of various conditions as one season ends and the next begins, and that, coupled with an incredibly busy, physically intense weekend in late February, is what, I believe, triggered this latest round. Now that we're into spring, I hope that I'll get treated to calmer waters on the health front.

What makes me feel good. I like blue and green together, I like blue and black, I even don't dislike brown and black. For the "fashion patrol" out there I always say that of course clothes show are era, we can trace history through fashion, and fashion gives jobs and so on, so on, but basically clothes should be meant to protect us from snow, sun, etc. Should. Who dictates fashion rules? Anyway, I loved your dress and gloves, and hat, you look so sweet and beautiful! I hope your health improves and that you can leave the house more often! Hugs and kisses!

  32. I agree with you fashion rules often make no sense. And of course they become redundant as times change. Having grown up in the 60s and 70s when everything was a riot of colour and then lived in Paris, home of the little black dress in the mono 90s I know only too well that you must follow what you feel is right for yourself. 1. Exactly! What might have been quite sound and logical in, say, 1840 or 1900, does not necessarily ring true today for most people and it is doing fashion, and colours themselves, a disservice to (potentially) trap them behind "rules" that are now largely antiquated and/or no longer relevant to the lives of fashion fans in today's world.

  35. I don't understand the blue-green rule any more than I do why some people won't put pink and red together... I actually think blue is one of the most versatile colours for matching out there; there's little it doesn't go with, in my eyes. You are rocking blue and green here - I love those gloves especially! A very classy, very beautiful outfit xx

    1. Thank you very much, sweet CiCi - knowing our mutual passion (which, I should mention, Tony shares as well) for mint green, I had a distinct feeling that you'd be a big fan of these elegant ruched gloves, too. :)

Agreed! Many shades of blue (beyond "just" navy and classic denim) are pseudo neutrals in my books and they really do, as you so wisely pointed out, go with countless other colours. Blue is a strong backbone in my wardrobe and I can't imagine it ever not being such.

Many hugs & happy Monday wishes,
      ♥ Jessica

  36. I've really never understood the rule against blue and green together and, like you, tend ignore it. To me, they're both such fresh pretty colors that there's no reason for them not to go together provided the shades you choose don't clash...speaking of which, I love the varying shades of greens you have with this outfit, you look splendid!

    Hope you are feeling better!

    1. Same here! You'd think given how often they occur in nature together that this would be one of the most common and popular colour combos, but no dice. It's really strange! Thankfully us fashionistas can do our own part to help change the tides there. :)

Thank you very much. I'm thrilled to report that my flare-ups really calmed down last week at long last. So much so, in fact, that Tony and I were able to get out of town on a quick, much needed weekend road trip (we returned on Sunday night) - which I'll be blogging about here in the near future. A couple of days to recoup now from that, and hopefully I'll still be doing well and able to (keep) get(ting) out more this spring.

Tons of hugs coming your way,
      ♥ Jessica

  37. I completely agree! While I love wearing season colors, it really comes down to you and what you are comfortable with and what you like!

Also, the photos are gorgeous and perhaps some of my favorite! The setting is so gorgeous!

    1. It totally does, I agree. The importance of confidence in dressing cannot be understated and goes such a long way towards how successful just about any outfit looks. Thank you for raising that important point, sweet Janey.

I love these snaps - and this outfit - as well. The light was so grey and flat that day, but as usual Tony still managed to weave his magic and create a deeply beautiful set of images (props to him for such! :)).

Big hugs & happy second half of April wishes to you, my dear friend,

  39. Those vibrant colours in your dress and hat really sing out in these photos. Such a lovely outfit. The minty green of your gloves matches the roofs of the buildings in the background which may be unintentional accessorising but I rather loved it! Hope your flare ups are improving so that you can get out and about again.

    1. Fantastic spotting! That wan't intentional, but it was certainly a cool coincidence. I just love it when random locations end up working out like that. :)

Thank you very much. Things have calmed down a fair bit, and while this week isn't quite as good on that front than the last, they're still considerably better than late Feb - early April, so I can't complain in the slightest.

I hope that you're having a sunny, terrific weekend. After a week of scorching, for this time of the year especially, hot temps, we're getting cooler weather and rain again here at the moment - which, really, is much more in keeping with the spirit of April (than new 30C temps!).

Tons of hugs & happy Sunday wishes,
      ♥ Jessica

  40. You look adorable in that dress, dear. You are very lucky to get such lovely additions to your wardrobe. And you are so absolutely right about all those completely outdated fashion rules. I've always loved red and pink together and often got comments about it, but I think it looks great together. And so does your pairing of green and blue. And I'm officially behind with your blog! Gardening, the green house project, sewing and life got in the way. So sorry. I will catch up a bit tonight. Have a lovely day, dear. :)

    1. Thank you sweetly, dear Sanne. I am very fortunate to be able to work so many stellar sponsors around the world. I never take this for granted and value every person or company that I have a working relationship with. They benefit my blog and I benefit their company, so it's a stellar arrangement for all involved.

Red and pink are marvelous together! I've always been especially drawn to that pairing in the context of floral prints - particularly dresses. The first truly adult looking frock that I had as a young teenager was a curve hugging pink and red rose print on a white background. It wasn't vintage, but it had a 50s-esque quality and I wore it until it was ready for the rag bag.

Please don't worry for the tiniest of moment. I truly appreciate your visits and comments anytime. It's so touch that you pop by here on the very frequent basis that you do.

I hope that things are going swimmingly with the greenhouse, gardening and everything else. We're well on this end as May kicks off and are getting treated to just about the most perfect springtime weather one could ever ask for.

Huge hugs & joyful May wishes!
      ♥ Jessica
