Photography by Tony Cangiano

{Epic stocking bunching throughout, I know now after the fact - the result of trudging a few hundred feet through the snow, my shoes completely full of the icy white stuff, to reach the spot in which these photos were taken.}

No, I'm not speaking metaphorically here with the title of today's outfit post, in this instance, I mean literal hiccups. Fortunately, I'm not prone to such on a regular basis, but when they do strike they last for hours and hours (usually no matter what trick/technique I try to make them vanish).

On the icy, overcast, snowy day not too long ago when Tony and I grabbed these photos down near the shores of Okanagan Lake (in West Kelowna), the hiccups were out in full force for me. I'd had them for about 90 minutes already that morning, then they returned in the afternoon and proceeded to hang around for about three hours. In all the years I've been photographed for my blog, I can confidently say that such was a first (hiccups on camera, I mean).

As such, if I look a touch somber in some of these shots, I assure that I wasn't - I was just trying to keep from the whole shoot being nothing but terribly unflattering outtakes, so I was pursing my lips a lot of the time.

You may recall back in January when I mentioned (in this giveaway post) that I had a super fun flamingo print skirt from the brand Violet Vixen to share here with all of you, which the company very kindly sent me for review (thank you!!!).

Now, as much as I love punchy colours in the winter, I'm the first to admit that I don't usually rock a garment that is this heavily tropical print centered when there's snow up to my knees. Sometimes through, it's fun to break with tradition and so on a day that was well below freezing and that boasted some of the most slate grey skies imaginable, I did just that.

This skirt is such a charmer! Similar in price ($63 USD) to brands such as Hell Bunny, this delightful Violet Vixen flamingo print skirt channels the 1950s, right down to the pair of slanted hip pockets that feature lovely black fold-over tops.

I opted for the size small and am extremely pleased with the fit. On me, at barely 5'2", this skirt hits mid-calf, which is my absolute favourite point for any skirt or dress hem to land. Depending on your height and how far up your torso you opt to wear it, it may hit you a bit lower or higher, but on many folks, midi length is wildly flattering, so the fact that it will end up being such on a lot of people, is a big point in this skirt's favour.

Another is the comfortable cotton fabric that it's made of. Though it is more on the spring/summer weight side of things, I've certainly sported other skirts over the years that left me far chillier in the winter. One could probably get a thin, not-very-poufy crinoline under this skirt, but as it is closer to a-line than circle in shape, you'll want to leave your more voluminous pettiskirts in the closet when rocking this darling novelty print skirt.

Its colour palette is certainly evocative of the warmer months as well, as is the design on the fabric - a riot of coral pink birds, yellow and black palm fronds, plus coral pink and white tropical (hibiscus style) flowers, but that certainly doesn't mean that you have to reserve this skirt just for the dog days of the year.

While punchy, its colours are not full on neon light bright and can certainly be tempered, if so desired, by wearing black (shirt, tights, coat, etc) or another dark hue, such as grey, that would compliment the shades at work here nicely.

I always genuinely enjoy thinking - and styling - outside of the box and I love that wearing this skirt during the freezing cold days of winter made me do just that.

Instead of a breezy blouse, flirty halter top, or lightweight cardigan, I reached for crisp black button front shirt and turquoise blazer, to which I added vintage wrist length pink gloves, a beloved black 1940s/50s platter hat, my use-it-at-least-once-a-week black 50s/60s patent purse, and a classic pair of black pumps, plus some gold and yellow hued jewelry to tie into the palette of the skirt itself.

Actual physical hiccups are not usually fun (mine eventually vanished that day and thankfully have stayed at bay since then), but those of the more figurative sort like styling a flamingo print fifties style skirt in the dead of winter can be. They serve, in the process, as important reminders that the overwhelming majority of garments can - if so desired - be styled successfully all year round.

A point that my flamingo skirt and I will raise raise a paper umbrella adorned tropical drink to even on the dreariest days of winter! :)

  5. Beautiful as always. I love the way you match colours and make them work even with a landscape that have "nothing in common" with them! I never thought of seeing flamingos in the snow, it is per se a very tropical, jamaican, florida´s fabric. Easy to find on the beach but a big surprise to see it sorrounded by the wite blanket mother´s nature offers us in winter.
I also hope that you already received your new computer and that Tony is feeling better (how´s its back doing)?
Please do, have an alcohol free coctail with paper umbrella on it at home. Enjoy it! cheers! Eva from Luxembourg/Germany

    1. It was definitely fun to bring a hit of the tropics to this corner of the snow clad world for a little while, especially because it helped to perk up a rather heavy month.

I'm very (!!!) happy to report that at long last I do indeed have a new computer (I'll be announcing as much here on my blog very shortly) and that I'm typing these words to you on it. While there are pros to being computer-less, there are also many cons, and ultimately, especially given how much time I typically spend online, I'm very glad to have my new laptop and look forward to all the fun things I'll create on it. :)

Thank you for asking about Tony's back. That's really sweet of you. He started physiotherapy this week and we're wholeheartedly hoping that such will help him.

It's such a bright burst of colour on my screen, I love it! The blazer is particularly nice with the skirt, and I hope kept you cosy enough for this shoot.

Find after a while, hiccups literally make you feel worn out and they certainly aren't conducive to having lengthy conversations. 21. Hiccups during a photoshoot - how irritating!! It's not happened to me yet, but I bet it's only a matter of time... Although lasting for hours, wow. I'm very lucky mine usually go after 30 minutes! James, strangely, gets hiccups pretty frequently. He once tripped over and gave himself hiccups. Last weekend I made him laugh and it triggered at least 20 minutes' worth. Isn't it funny how they manifest so differently in people! Anyway, this is such a fun, bright look - how can you not be cheered up by it even in the depths of winter?! I haven't worn anything tropical at this time of year either, but I'm planning to change that next weekend for my friend's hen do :D xx

    1. Definitely! Flamingos, and in some ways the whole colour palette of this outfit, has a total Miami Vice vibe (I love that show so much - ditto for Don Johnson's 1990s TV series Nash Bridges). Interestingly, despite flamingos being very popular in the vintage/retro/pinup world, prior to this skirt, I (unintentionally) owned almost nothing flamingo themed. I'm delighted that I could rectify that with this charming skirt.

  30. Ooh this is such a fun tropical outfit! Makes me want to hang out by the seaside and sip on fruity drinks. :) Arg hiccups are so frustrating! I have found that if I get them once, I am bound to get them about five more times that day, so strange. The only way I can get rid of them is if I take a huge breath in, and take tiny breaths in and out while pressing really hard below my lungs until they disappear. Which probably makes me look completely insane. Haha! It's literally the only thing that will make them go away but it doesn't always work.

That's one of the tricks I like to try as well and it does sometimes work, but not that day. I remember having woken up quite suddenly that morning and suspect that I may have taken in excess air in the process, so maybe that's why the hiccups for so stubborn for me that time around. 1. Thank you very much, sweet dear. It's an invigorating experience to say the least, but I do love shooting in a the snow at least a couple of times each winter. It just feels like the natural thing to do for a Canadian blogger like me. :)

Many hugs & thanks for your lovely comment,

    1. Thank you sweetly, Kayla honey. I really do as well. This shoot plus one I did back in December with the red 50s style dress from The House of Foxy (also in the snow) are some of my favourite shoots in recent months. It's cold as all get out for sure, but goodness, does shooting in the snow result in fabulous photos! :)

Big hugs & happy mid-March wishes,

  39. I LOVE the contrast of your flamingo skirt with the snowy background! It definitely helps brighten up my mood to pretend it's spring/summer and wear really bright clothes in the middle of winter, and there's no better example of it than this. It's a shame about your hiccups though! I get them sometimes too but they don't usually last more than 10 mins, I can't imagine what I'd do if they hung around for 3 hours and I couldn't get rid of them with any of the usual methods, you poor thing!

    1. You're so sweet and caring, thank you very much, Jessica. I think the thing that I dislike the most about prolonged periods of having the hiccups is that they start to make my stomach and throat both hurt after a while. I wonder if others run into this too?

Three big cheers for vibrant hues on winter days. They are like a shot of vitamin D for your eyes and (sun starved) soul alike.

Oodles of hugs & thanks for your great blog comments today,
      ♥ Jessica

  40. Oh how cute you are. You are a flower in the middle of the snow, dear. Such a cute skirt, I can imagine it will be fabulous when the sun shines mid summer. I visited the first Danish vintage fair yesterday and got THREE fantastic fifties dresses. I'm SO happy. :) Have a lovely day, dear. :)

    1. I swear, I just said "wow" out loud as I read your last line. Super awesome finds, sweet Sanne. I can't even begin to remember the last time I added three 1950s dresses to my closet on the same day (or even in the same month). That' so cool! I bet you're floating on cloud nine right now over this awesome score.

Thank you sweetly! I'm looking forward to styling this skirt in the summer, too. It will suit our town's beaches and luxurious sunshine so nicely. :)

Many thanks, too, for all of your terrific recent blog comments. It genuinely means a lot to me that you comment on so many of my posts.

      Scores of hugs,
      ♥ Jessica
