Vintage collegiate style is amongst my favourite looks ever. It's typically a classy, fairly structured, youthful approach to dressing that one can continue to take a styling cue from long after they've graduated. At my age, I'm not passing for a college freshman any more and am certainly not trying to pretend that I am. Luckily many elements of the mid-century collegiate look - pencil skirts, tweeds, corduroy, knee socks, sweaters, twin sets, penny loafers, leather satchels, basic pearl jewelry, jaunty little caps, and numerous other elements work wonders as one advances in life, too.

Today's outfit used the gorgeous Joy Statement Necklace in Navy that I recently received as a very lovely review gift from the stellar European jewelry, accessories and clothing brand, Happiness Boutique, as its jumping off point. Made of aged brass and lustrous blue stones, this elegant necklace telegraphs the spirit of the past, but could just as easily work wonders in the context of a more contemporary ensemble, too.

I'm wild about this necklace and about Happiness Boutique (which I want to sincerely thank for this awesome review gift). Not only are many of their offerings old school appropriate, but some of their jewelry is also nickel-free. If, like myself, you happen to be allergic to this far-too-commonplace base metal, then you'll definitely know what a substantial struggle it is to find jewelry, let alone pieces other than earrings, that made from metal and actually nickel-free.

The moment I learned that many of Happiness Boutique's were/are, they had an instant fan in me. A spin around this well stocked, frequently updated website - which offers the option to shop in various currencies - only cemented my adoration for this thriving European online jewelry and fashion shop all the more.

Their prices, even when converted from Euros into Canadian, American, etc dollars, are quite reasonable in my opinion, especially for well made, stylish, trendy and/or timeless looking nickel-free jewelry and I have every intention to purchase from Happiness Boutique as time goes on (I need to grow the nickel-free necklace section of my jewelry box something fierce and their chic offerings could certainly help there!).

Now, I fully realize that such a glam necklace would not have been part of one's usual mid-century collegiate fashion look, but I wasn't going for an absolutely true to form ensemble. Instead I wanted to marry elements of that look with some that were of a more sophisticated nature as well - chiefly that stunning midnight blue 1940s/1950s platter hat and the fabulous necklace from Happiness Boutique.

I love this tweed blazer (that boasts faux leather elbow pads for an extra dose of university approved style), which was a thrift find (that originally hailed from Suzy Shier), but rarely wear it because it's a bit tight in the upper arms for me. It’s an extra small and I know that were it a small, it would fit perfectly (in the arms at least).

As much as I adore it, I think it might get the axe the next time I purge my closet, as I don't like to hang on to ill fitting garments, if I can avoid it. The main reason I haven't done so thus far is that it's my own brown tweed jacket and I as I'm a huge tweet fan, I'm rather partial to this blazer - tight sleeves and all. Maybe I'll thrift a similar piece this fall and then I'll have no qualms parting ways with this classic looking topper.

The sun was out in full force on the recent day when Tony and I captured these outfit snaps in the nearby community of Okanagan Falls. As such, I decided to try an experiment and see if I would squint less (something longtime readers will know that I'm fairly prone to doing) if I didn't smile much, but honestly, in reviewing these snaps, I see little difference and as I don't really have the sort of face that can usually pull off a solemn expression without looking sad/mad/blue/worried, I think I'll stick to smiling no matter if the sun is out or not - especially since I was a in a great mood that day, thanks in no small part to this fabulous Happiness Boutique necklace.

In fact, I was even chuckling to myself a little at one point, because it occurred to me that I might have accidentally channeled a Boy George-esque look with my fully buttoned up shirt and wide brim hat. Thankfully in reviewing these photos, I don't really see that, but it was fun to laugh about in the moment all the same.

There's no time of the year, to my mind, that suits a vintage collegiate look better than fall, no matter if one follows it to the letter or just borrows inspiration, as I did with this outfit. The textured fabrics, handy layers, sensible shoes, and warm jackets take to autumn like a duck to water and definitely work well whether one is 18, 38, 58 or beyond. This is a very good thing because at the age of 31, I find my love of this look only deepens with each passing year and I'm sure you'll see me continue to channel this classic style for many an autumn to come!

  1. Ha, no, there's no Boy George here, Jessica, just your usual fabulous, impeccably-dressed self! I love the deep blues in this outfit; it's both smart and seriously pretty. I've got a kind of collegiate look in the works myself, although I hadn't really twigged that was almost what it was until reading your post here - now I think I should perhaps take it more in that direction, as why not ;) xx

    1. Ooohh, I'm super excited to see your take on this classic style, too. This outfit reminded me of just how much I adore the collegiate look and that I should reach for it more often. If only I could find more tweed that actually fit me well while thrifting. It just hasn't been worn much in most parts of Canada for decades now, so there isn't a ton floating around, especially in women's wear.

Thank you very much for your great comment and splendidly sweet words.

      Giant hugs,
      ♥ Jessica

  2. I love this style, classic yet always has something that attracts! In Italy (in fact, in Italy we have nothing ..hehehehhe) we do not have uniforms for schools or universities. Your jacket is beautiful, I love this fabric and fantasy "Prince of Wales", I have a pair of pants, which I loved, but now they are a bit 'too close for me ... for this are on a diet!
My mom is allergic to nickel, then you understand .. Fortunately now there are lines of jewelry like the ones wearing them! Ah, this hat is delicious!

    1. Thank you very much, dear Serena. I'm sorry that your mom is allergic to nickel as well. Given that rather commonplace occurrence of this allergy, it's surprisingly that nickle is still so common in tons of things, from shoe buckles to bra hooks, the buttons and rivets on jeans to, of course, jewelry. Perhaps as time goes on, more and more brands will take Happiness Boutique's lead and offer at least some nickel-free options.

      Have a beautiful week!

    1. Thank you ever so much, lovely Stephanie. Seeing these photos reminds me that I need to try all the more to find other tweed pieces (I do have a few, but not many) for my wardrobe. It's one of my favourite fabrics ever and it has the added bonus of being a true classic that works so well with vintage styles.

Wishing you a fantastic tail end of October!

  5. Classy lady, this is such a great look for you - I love that lip colour on you too, and it matches your glasses! I have a couple of tweedy jackets that I haven't worn yet this season, so I am feeling inspired by you to get them out of the wardrobe and give them a spin with a pencil skirt. Your accessories are always impeccable, such a grown-up and sophisticated look. xx

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Porcelina. I noticed that about this shade early on (I started wearing it around the end of the spring) and wondered if others would, too. You have a great eye and I'm delighted that you saw that match as well.

I eagerly look forward to seeing your own tweed + pencil skirt look(s), if you share it/them with us. You're very fortunate to live in the Motherland of tweed - it's quite the rarity usually, especially with women's wear, here in Canada these days.

Tons of hugs & happy mid-week wishes,

    2. I did wear a tweed jacket! I wore a purpley-pinky one to work with a black pencil skirt, pinky red heels and a bright pink scarf. No photos this time around, so I'll just have to wear my tweedy jacket again soon! I love that description of the 'Motherland' of tweed! Here in Wales we also have lovely Welsh tapestry, though it's skyrocketed in price in recent years. Hope you have a good Monday xx

  6. Love your look here! And, stupid question, I see you know how to use hat pins. I've always wondered. Does it go through hat and hair to hold the hat on? Put on very delicately to avoid stabbing yourself? Or is it decorative?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Karen, thank you very much for your lovely comment and question. Though very small hat pins and brooches of all sizes can be used purely decoratively, in general they do indeed go through both the hat and one's hair to help ensure the chapeau stays put no matter the weather. They're very easy to use and I've never seriously poked myself in all the years (about sixteen and counting now) that I've been wearing them.

Thanks again & have a beautiful week!

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Daphne. Sometimes, I find, the weight of a piece can be a big factor there. If a necklace is too light, it isn't as apt to stay put. This one isn't heavy, thankfully, but it does have a nice, even heft to it and that helps it to drape really well.

Big hugs & happy Wednesday wishes,

  8. Beautiful lighting in these shots Jessica - I absolutely love your jacket, its fits wonderfully.
And of course one of the things that first caught my eye was the gorgeous necklace.
I have been wondering if you have any vintage Trompe l'oleil garments in your wardrobe.

    Replies
    1. Thank you very much, sweet Lorena. Save for this jacket being a bit too tight in the upper arms, it does fit marvelously - which makes the facts that the arms aren't perfect all the more of a shame. During my next purge (I'm taking your lead and doing them all the more frequently these days), it will most likely get the axe, despite how much I love it.

You know, come to think of it, I don't believe that I have trompe l'oleil garments at present. They're super charming and I'm not opposed to adding those with a vintage flare to my closet. I'll have to keep my eyes peeled now for one. Thanks for the lovely reminder.

      Tons of hugs,

    1. Thank you very much, my darling friend. I had a feeling you'd been quite keen on this look, too. Usually I'm not an extra small myself, but sometimes I am with blazers. Were the arms just an inch or two more generous (there's no seam allowance for such, I've checked), it would be a perfect fit. Oh well! I guess that just means there's something better (fitting) out there waiting for me to thrift. :)

  15. I can definitely agree with everything you've stated here! Every autumn I pull out my fitted, brown tweed jacket (very lucky fabric was woven in Yorkshire UK) and create classic Autumn ensembles with many of the features you mention. I don't think I will ever fall out of love with it, or this particular look, and I am older than you ;) You look very elegant xx

    1. Thank you very much, my darling friend. You're so lucky to live in the Motherland of tweed, as I like to playfully think of the UK. It's not the easiest pattern to find here, let alone in budget friend, vintage appropriate pieces. Were it, I think I'd have a whole closet full of this hearty, timeless fabric, as I really do adore it.

How fabulous that you're a fan, too, and that you look to classic American styles for some of your own fall looks as well. That's wonderful!

  18. I've always been a fan of navy, it goes so well with whatever one is feeling at the moment, silver or gold, dark or classy, patriotic or dressed up.
Also your lip color is rocking!! Maybe a fall lipsticks post is in order someday? You certainly know your way around those!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Absolutely!!! That was a good chunk of the driving force behind the post that I penned earlier this year all about the value and fun of wearing navy blue. It's just as versatile as black, grey or brown, but can often be warmer and, to some folks, more flattering than some or even all of those other dark neutrals.

That's a lovely idea, thank you for suggesting. I have a rather small roster of lipsticks that I wear at the best of times, but perhaps such a topic could be woven into something like a "my favourite new beauty finds of 2015" post towards the end of the year. The ol' wheels are turning - thanks again!

  20. I just love the tweed jacket Jessica. Here in Sicily it's not easy to find tweed for women, but I had a piece of cloth that my daughter had ordered from abroad for me and I had a jacket made out of it. Your whole outfit is really fabulous and you look so pretty. Here in Sicily it is just getting cooler, yesterday it was hot and sunny but today it's cloudy, windy and rainy.

    1. Hi lovely lady, thank you very much for your great comment. You might think that in a country like Canada, where winter reigns for at least half the year in most places, tweed would abound in spades, but by and large, especially in terms of classic looking women's wear, it really doesn't. I'm always on the prowl for it while thrifting, but haven't found much that worked for me over the years - so hence why I bought this blazer (years ago now) even though it's a bit too tight in the upper arms. As soon as I find a similar one some day, I'll be donating this back to the thrift shop (I don't like to hold onto ill fitting garments). Shame though, it really is a classic stunner!

How fabulous that you were able to make a similar jacket from some fabric that your daughter ordered from overseas. I hope you get many years of enjoyment and wear out of it.

      Have a beautiful Thursday,

  21. Jess,
What a perfect way to tackle the issue of "what to wear to a business meeting without giving up vintage look". For many girls, that is the obstacle, and they chose to be "weekend vintage wear" ladies - simply because they shy away from considering that, with some clever tricks (shown here, by you my dear) one CAN look amazing in vintage.
Offices are having strict rules. They have them for a reason - believe it or not, unless regulated, some gals might show up wearing "here's everything" cleavage and leggings. Nothing against them - but there's time and place for it. Unless there's a uniform required, one can let her imagination go.. black blazer, black skirt and pressed white button-up are NOT the only way. :)
You are showing a perfect example of stylish, office-friendly, even power-woman attire.
Yes, I'd wear something like that. I do wear something like that. :)

I suppose because I work from home and don't have to put on corporate type attire all that often, even for meetings, I didn't think about it from that viewpoint. Thank you so much for bringing it up and also for rocking vintage in the business realm, dear Marija. You rock!!!

Congrats on your own similar jacket. I look forward to seeing it anytime. I wish this one fit better in the upper arms. Were it not for that, I'd be keeping it for many years to come, but as it is a touch too tight there, I plan to replace it when I finally find (aka, thrift) a similar jacket again.

I don't see any problems with the fitting of the jacket, so I suppose it is more of a feeling and that's not nice. Now you have something to hunt for in charity shops and it is always nice. Wishing you a lovely day, dear. :)

    1. Thank you sweetly, dear Sanne. It was the buttoned up shirt + wide brimmed hat that made me wonder if I was channeling that 1980s superstar, but once I saw the outfit in pictures, I was glad to see I didn't really look the part. :)

Indeed! I have a big list of things I'm always on the prowl for, but more tweed will be topping it. What are some of the items you're hunting for yourself this fall and winter?

Tons of hugs & super happy Halloween week wishes!

    2. Plaids! I adore plaids, and have for long been on the hunt for a dark green (preferably) plaid, pleeted skirt, but haven't found the perfect one yet. And I can never get too many dresses. Imagine we lived in the same city and went hunting together, then went home to one of us and drank tea together! :) We could easily go' hunting together since we don't wear the same size. Aah, dreaming. Have a lovely day, dear. XOXO

  35. Wonderful! The electric blue and the fall coloured pieces go so perfectly together. The modern blazer does a great job in a vintage look. Love it!

    1. Thank you very much, my lovely friend! Tweed is so inherently classic. I just adore the way many modern pieces made from it look the old school part to a tee.

Wishing you a beautiful last week of October!
