Fabulous 1940s Fall Fashion Inspiration

This year, the fall equinox falls on September 23rd, which means that we're just eight (seven if you don't count the one that we're on) days away from the return of autumn. Yippee!!!

While part of me would love nothing more than to cling to summer's warmth for many, many more months, the seasons will come and go as they please, and I've long learned that it's best to just smile and go along for the ride.

There's no prodding needed to get me to grin up a storm this month though, as I adore autumn to no end and elated that it's upon us once more. As much as I enjoy all of summer's pretty, practical fashions - from straw hats to sundresses, wedge heels to capri pants - there is something deeply comforting about the return of heavier fabrics, warm layers, and longer sleeve and hem lengths, too.

Nearly three years ago now, I debated the pros and cons of dressing for each half of the year in a post called Summer vs Winter Wardrobe, as I felt then that my preference was shifting from fall/winter to spring/summer fashions. Honestly, the more time that goes on though, the greater I adore and just try to make the best of each season's fashions, no matter how far on the extreme side of the thermostat the temperature might be.

Autumn, especially its early weeks, is a particularly lovely time of the year to dress for. We're usually free of heavy snow boots and wool coats, and don't yet risk getting frostbite or hypothermia while outdoors taking outfit photos for our blogs. Yet by the same token, we aren't melting faster than a popsicle dropped on the tarmac in July under the sweltering summer sun any longer either.

Much like its springtime counterpart (late April to early June), these weeks are a glorious time for fashion bloggers and the whole world alike. Just about every vintage wearer out there adores seeing beautiful images of each season's sartorial offerings, so with autumn just a handful of days away from officially beginning and the weathers starting to turn a little nippy again already in many areas, I thought that today would be a great time to share some of my favourite vintage autumn style ideas and images with you guys.

So slip on a cozy cardigan, curl up with a pumpkin spice latte, and let that gorgeously golden mid-September sunlight bath over you as you take a gander at the following selection of 15 fabulous vintage fall fashions, each of which suits the coming season wonderfully well (ditto for winter and early spring).

1. A pert, nipped waist jacket the colour of a frost tinged apple combines with serene shades of beige and brown in this elegant look that graced the cover of the August 1949 edition of Harper's Bazaar magazine. I'd add some gold, brass, or champagne pearl jewelry to mix, myself, and call it a (stylish) day.

2. Neither straw hats nor polkas dots need be reserved strictly for spring and summer, especially when a solid black coat is involved, as this cute meets sophisticated outfit from 1947 does a great job of highlighting.

3. From the streets and fashion houses of Paris that same year, comes this appealing trio of autumn perfect dress, suit, coat, and hat looks - those good sized, classic mid-century handbags aren't too shabby either!

4. From the stylish pocket square to the thoroughly awesome pocket watch on the belt (love that idea!!!) to the dark fox brown hued, over sized pocket adorned dress itself, this is one 1940s fall look that we would all be especially wise to take a styling cue from.

5. Tartan and cold weather go hand-in-hand like Thanksgiving and pumpkin pie. Follow this stylish gal's lead and draw on one of the main colours in your plaid or tartan garments for your accessories. Here she's sporting green, which is utterly gorgeous, but in this case, red would be terrific, too, especially come Christmastime.

6. Rouse your knits from their long summer slumber and put them to work with a classic a-line or circle skirt, as in this great late 40s look that draws its colour palette inspiration from the earth. Extra style bonus points if you use an oversized safety pin for as a fun finishing touch on your ensemble.

7. The seasonal appropriateness of mustard/saffron cannot be overstated on the fall fashion front. Whether you opt for a small hit or a big dose (say a skirt or dress in this warm shade of yellow), it plays superbly with the season's darker tones of brown, rust, grey, camel, black, navy, pumpkin, pine green, burgundy, and red currant, and really deserves to be a part of everyone's autumn wardrobe.

8. Looking for some great fall colour ideas? Search no further than this 1949 Milliken fabric ad, which houses several shades that suit the season to a tee and which combine marvelously with one another to boot.

9. The notion of layering a fall/winter coat over a skirt suit is almost unheard of in today's fashion world, but thankfully us vintage sporting folks know how incredibly chic and sophisticated - not to mention roasty-toasty warm - this timeless look can be. Plus, there's fall's pet colour, mustard, again - and just see how fabulously it works with this dark checkered fabric. Dreamy!

10. Bar none, one of my top five favourite fabrics ever, corduroy is worth loving autumn for alone! Warm, cozy and versatile, this awesome fabric looks amazing in everything from coats (as shown here) to slacks to vests, and is one of the first materials I reach for after Labour Day.

11. No need to completely retire spring worthy pale hues just because September comes a calling. Partner them with darker shades and lush fabrics, such as the deep brown fur, gloves and hat shown here and you've got an fall time worthy vintage look that will turn heads and garner compliments far and wide.

12. Pussy bow blouses and dresses are a smart, practical choice when autumn's winds start blowing again, as they help to keep the chill at bay much like a scarf. For extra warmth, top a look such as this classy red dress with a blazer and/or knit shawl.

13. Colour blocking and cold weather have always gone together wonderfully, and if you happen to have a knit, boucle, or wool crepe dress in two or three blocked hues (such as the super chic one shown here), all the better to help fend off those returning frosty temps. Note also the sheer celery green scarf tucked in around her neck for additional warmth.

14. Take a style note from the make-do-and-mend years of the early 40s and embellish plain, solid coloured separates with lace, crochet, studs, decorative buttons, sequins, rickrack or other fun trims and help ensure your vintage wardrobe looks as pretty as a harvest moon this fall.

15. While I certainly wear hats all year long, like many folks, I tend to sport hair flowers, scarves and snoods more often when summer's heat is out in full force. Now that it's retreating, I'm jumping with joy to don my favourite 1930s, 40s, and 50s hats again, including a couple of new ones that I've acquired this year. Borrow an idea or two for this lovely 1940s image and jazz up your vintage chapeaus with flowers, netting, feathers and anything else your heart desires.

Of all the seasonal colour palettes of the year, there is not that I love more - or which I've been told by numerous people over the years works better on me - that of autumn. I've already started to trade out my punchy pinks, purples, turquoises, corals, baby chick yellows, and light blues for earthy shades of amber, moss, oak, forest green, pumpkin, cranberry, slate, eggplant, and marigold, to name but a few.

Likewise, my fall and winter wardrobe is coming out of hibernation. Soon, sturdy leather, suede and velvet bags with replace breezy wicker and cloth options, closed toed shoes will become a must, and tights will take over for bare legs or sheer seamed stockings (when outdoors at least!).

There is a beautiful sense of natural order to this shifting of our seasonal wardrobes and I'm excited to embrace fall's fashion offerings again. Inspired by many different memories, ideas, and sources, very much including the fifteen 1940s autumn fashion images highlighted here today, in the process.

Tell, my dears, are you likewise eager to slip into tweeds, wools, corduroy, and more layers than Greek phyllo pastry once more or do you wish that summer would linger on for another century or so?

    1. That sounds gorgeous! I've always wanted corset back coat myself. How wonderful that the warm weather is lingering on your end, by and large, it's getting chillier here almost everyday and you can tell that summer is definitely on its way out the door. I'll miss it (big time), but am elated to welcome my favourite season back again.

Wishing you a beautiful end of summer/start of fall, dear lady.

    1. Don't they though? I utterly adore that about vintage fashion. There was often such a graceful ease to it that seemed to spring forth from a lifetime of being well dressed and beautifully colour coordinated (of course, though magazines like those that images came from would have had professionals on hand to help style the shoots, which went a long way to creating a super polished finished look, too).

Big hugs & many thanks for your great comment,

  6. What an inspiring post! I always feel sad to see summer pass, there is something warm and comforting about fall though. I love taking walks in the autumn woods. The crisp air and the beautiful foliage with a warm cup of pumpkin coffee or cider! As always, looking forward to your next post my friend!

    1. That there most certainly is - it's like a hug from a treasured friend that you haven't seen in, oh, about nine months. :) I adore taking walks in the woods in the fall too and feel so blessed to live directly across the street from some wooded hills and a peaceful, babbling creek (that leads down a few miles on to Okanagan Lake), which gives me (us) instant immersion in nature anytime I (we) want.

That's so sweet of you to say! Coming down the pipeline next is an outfit post taken at our town's public rose garden.

  7. Some fabulous inspiration here! I am so excited to haul my lovely suits and fall colours out of storage (not to mention, my boots!) in a couple of weeks. Thank you for the gorgeous images!

    1. Same here, big time!!! Most of my suits (not that I have a ton, I don't - they're a hard to fit garment for me, but when I do find one that works, it's pure fashion nirvana! :)) are made from cold weather weight fabrics, so I rarely wear a suit from about May to early September. Slipping into one again is like a rite that celebrates the start of autumn for me as well.

  8. I am totally with you Jessica in longing for Autumn. However much the biting winds of the later months may bother my sensitive skin, I absolutely love the delights of donning my woolen skirts and sweaters. And the colors of autumn are among my favorites as well.
Before I sign off, I must say, both that first image you shared, with the expertly tailored jacket, and the "large safety pin" skirted outfit are positively perfect! I am going to pin them straight away to my Autumn Pinterest board, if that is alright with you!

    1. Absolutely, dear Brigid, please feel free to pin anything from my blog to your heart's content. It's very thoughtful of you to double check first with me though. Thank you!

I'm sorry that the harsh winter winds can trouble your skin. I have sensitive skin as well and have experienced that, too, especially when I lived in even colder parts of the country (like Toronto). We're quite fortunate here in that our winters rarely dip below -25C and aren't uber windy as a general rule (one of the perks of living so far south in Canada).

Wishing you and your sisters a beautiful last week of summer and a truly fantastic autumn!

  9. Spring are better colors for me but I'm ready for mild weather! I miss petticoats. I'm hoping winter waits awhile because I'm not ready for tights or boots!

    ReplyDelete

    1. Spring's hues are definitely gorgeous, too. They can play really nicely with autumn's as well, I find. For example, a lilac or pale aqua dress can look gorgeous with brown accessories or a peach sweater would rock with a mustard yellow skirt. So if you like them (fall's shades), I would suggest trying that route and keeping the autumn ones to small percentages, that way the other more flattering colours are the star of the show. I use this approach to colour myself in general and feel like there is just about no hue that I can't wear, if so desired, thanks to it.

Big hugs & happy last week of summer wishes,

  10. You know I wouldn't complain if we had year-long summer! I would happily embrace Christmas Day bbqs, as a trade for warmth all the time! Saying that, I like to rotate my wardrobe or I'd probably get bored of wearing the same things all the time, so every wintry cloud has a silver lining... I'd love to add more of these earthy colours to my cold weather wardrobe. I've got a bit too much black at the moment! Our weather here has turned so fast that I'm already snapping autumn outfits... 2 down! xx

    1. Some years, as much as I do adore fall (and winter - yes, I'm a dyed-in-the-wool Canadian there, I know :)), I'm with you entirely. I wouldn't have minded many more months of it this time around, especially since I didn't get to experience it in many of the same ways as I have in other recent years because Tony was away. It was still lovely and enjoyable, but again, differed from what I'm used to and as such I'll be all the more eager for next year's to roll around.

Happy autumn shopping - I utterly adore buying clothes for this season!

Out of all the seasons, autumn is by far the most colorful, most smelling, most versatile.. and just the sight of fallen chestnuts on the ground makes me stop, pick one up and put it in my pocket.. I will not lie if I say this is indeed my favorite time of the year.
The fashion, the choices, the change in season looks so amazing when you line in a continental climate.. oh, you should ride a bike with me one day - glorious time!

    1. That's great to hear, Suzanne. Luckily accessories in autumnal hues are a cinch to add to your wardrobe, as gold, brass, copper, brown (wood, plastic, etc), and cream/ivory/natural pearl are super common for jewelry and darker hues like (again) brown, pine green, golds, oxblood, navy blue, grey and black are frequent players on the accessories front.

    1. Thank you very much, lovely Jill! There is (at least in my corner of the globe) a lot of overlap between autumn and spring styles. 1. No way, that's really cool! I know that you can find some pretty big ones still from some alt clothing sellers and also, on a different end of the fashion spectrum, from sites that sell traditional Scottish kilts and all the accouterments for such.

I'm not sure if such is true in Australia, but here in Canada there are a fair number of similarities weather and wardrobe wise between spring and autumn fashion, so many of these outfits, especially if the colour palette was more on the pastel side of the spectrum, would work well for both seasons.

Finding good true vintage winter clothes is so horrible!!!! The main issue is, if you finally find a jacket, blazer or coat most of them have super smelly armpits! 1. It can be tricky to find good vintage clothes for winter, you're spot on there. I've been lucky in that I've not encountered that often with the coats I've bought for myself (torn linings tend to be more common here), but of course I'm aware of it and have passed up coats and other vintage garments in shops before because I really doubted that their pungent odours could ever be fully removed. I'm sorry that it's something you run into frequently with coats, dear gal. I'm sure that's frustrating. Fingers crossed you find some scent-free ones for this year that you just adore.

  24. I love fall and how beautifully you capture the feeling of the season in this post. I live in Miami and we don't have 'fall' as it's always warm here. But I do begin to notice the change of light this time of year, how the afternoon sun gets more golden, softer, and that's how I know 'fall' is here. Although it doesn't mean a major warddrobe change for me, I do celebrate the season by wearing fall colors, which I LOVE, in my make-up routine. I also wear my heavier fragrances, like Shalimar, Angel, Black Orchid. It's a small change for those of us in Miami, but we enjoy it too. :-) (I wish I could wear my vintage wool 40's suit with a fur stole!)

    1. Hi Tania, thank you very much for your wonderfully nice comment. Excellent point about heavier/more heady fragrances suiting this time of the year better. I wear a signature scent all year round (which has been Dior's Hypnotic Poison - a perfume that is so much more gorgeous than its rather aggressive name would suggestion - for numerous years now), but enjoy shaking things up with other scents, too, and reach for my deeper ones in the fall and winter, too. I don't currently own Black Orchid, but that's one that I'm a fan of as well. Lately I've also been digging Marc Jabob's Honey, which does a rather excellent job of working well for both summer and fall, IMO.

Many thanks again & have a stellar start of autumn!

It gives us a chance to play around with layers, thicker fabrics and the like, furs/faux furs, sport gloves and thicker hats (and tights) without melting, and connect with a deeper colour palette, too. What's not to adore and find inspiration in if you're keen on style?

    1. So true - that's a terrific way to look at things, sweet Sanne. I just put together an outfit two days ago that is one, of if not my very favourite, of the year so far and it likely wouldn't have happened during the dog days of summer. It's great to reconnect with old favourites and newly acquired autumn/winter appropriate pieces alike and now that summer is mere hours from being over, my desire to embrace autumn is stronger than ever.

Wow, you've got me beat in the cardigan camp. I did prune out a few this summer, but I think I'm still in the range of about 40 (give or take a few). They're a staple garment for me the whole year 'round, so I try to have a wide range of colours, styles and weighs to hand. :)

It was vintage, but it had a certain collegiate early 60s feel to it for sure. I wore that thing into the ground and would happily sport it still if I ever found another. I love corduroy sooo much and wish it was a more common fabric still.

Thank you very much, my darling friend. I hope that autumn kicks off on a fun filled, marvelous note for you and continues as such all season long.

    Tons of hugs,
    ♥ Jessica
