Introducing a new post series: 25 vintage deals under $100

Recently I started work on a post that will appear here a little later in the spring devoted to how to wear vintage clothing on a budget, as it's a topic I both have a wealth (monetary related pun intended) of experience with and which I receive scores on emails pertaining to every month. This post won't be the first time I've delved into this important subject (2012's Five ways to make your vintage wardrobe dollars go further, for example), nor, I'm sure, will it be the last.

The economy is not what it used to be, my sweet friends. Even if you were blessed to make it through the massive recent recession relatively unscathed, chances are you no longer feel like your money goes anywhere near as far as it used to. The prices (at least here in my corner of Canada) on groceries and toiletry and beauty basics such as shampoo, toilet paper, and drug store makeup alone have climbed so high in recent years (with a noticable spike in the last year alone yet again) that for many, the idea of simply making ends meet is beginning to feel like a luxury unto its own right.

Of course, isn't the case for everyone, and I'm not implying as much, but it's more than fair to say that the world has been dragged through the wringer on the financial front in the past several years and that, by and large, it hasn't even remotely begun to dry out and spring back to life (one need only look at numerous European nations, such as Greece and Spain, and the tragic state of their economy for ample proof of that fact). Most of us though, even those who bring in a comfortable income and are getting by just fine, haven't felt the effects of this depression (I'm sorry World Bank and leading economists, I don't care that you won't elevate it from a recession to a full on depression, I think is was/is and have zero qualms calling it such!) to at least some degree.

I'm an eternal optimist, but I'm also an unbridled realist, and I know that even if things do improve somewhat in the coming years, they'll likely not return to anywhere near their pre-recession/depression levels anytime soon, if ever again. It's a sad, sad reality and one that we'll all be reeling from for a very long time to come.

Miss Doom and Gloom I'm not however, nor am I out to send anyone rushing to check the couch cushions for spare change. In fact, this post - and all others that will follow in its footsteps in this brand new series - is about the absolute opposite of sad, heavy subjects!

As title succinctly eludes, this new post series is going to  feature a selection of 25 vintage finds that I've come across online which I feel are well priced (if not flat out bargain basement deals), or (less commonly) are items of a more splurge-worthy nature that I feel will ultimately pay off as very worthwhile investments. As it's a number I very often set as the absolute cap for what I'll pay for a vintage item myself (yes, there are exceptions there of course, such as with winter coats, but by and large I like my price tags to be in the single or double digit range), as well as an amount that a fair number of us could pay for an item, I've decided to limit the maximum price that any one item that appears in such a post can cost at $100. Nearly all will be less than that however, and I'll try to keep a fair number of them below $75.00 even.

With exceptions made perhaps for certain big holidays like Halloween and Christmas, I'm planning to make these themed posts necessarily, but you never know - some of those could come along as well. By the same token, the items listed here are entirely random in the sense that you might find a pair of book ends sandwiches between some 1940s shoes and killer fifties circle skirt, all atop a dazzling art deco brooch and some swanky 1960s throw pillows. The only rule at work here really is that all the entries come in at, or under, one hundred US dollars (based on the price of their listing at the time I wrote this post, as well as, if applicable, the current conversion rate from one country's currency to American dollars).

As I’m a firm believer in that one of the best ways to help the economy is to support small businesses and independent retailers, a substantial number of the listings included in this posts will likely hail from etsy (and perhaps eBay, Ruby Lane, Art Fire, and other similar community marketplace sites), where scores of everyday folks just like you and me are trying to bolster, or completely generate, their income from their etsy shops. It’s unendingly important to support those small business owners, be they in your own community or online. Doing so is one of the best ways we as everyday, average citizens (aka, not the industrial tycoons, multi-millionaires, or the government) can help in our own small, but collectively substantial, way to bolster the economy.

No matter if you're a college student on a razor thin budget, a SAH with three little ones and a mortgage to cover the costs of every month, a well-to-do homemaker, a successful professional in their 40s, an intrepid self-employed store owner, a retiree who is enjoying their golden years on a fixed income, or absolutely any other type of person out there, regardless of your financial situation, I bet you adore saving money and getting a great deal whenever possible and that is the precise aim of this brand new series!

I love, love, love (!) saving money and feeling like I'm getting a solid bang for my buck, while discovering new online shops and reconnecting with old favourites alike and that is what 25 vintage deals under $100 is here to help you do as well. So without further ado, may I present to the first cherry picked selection of items to appear in this new series.

Unlike, say, Vintage Fashionista Friday or Saturday Snapshots, this budding new series will not be tied to a particular day of the week, nor will it reappear at a set date, though ideally I'd like to aim for a new edition ever month or so.

This is in no small part because a lot of bargains to do lot stick around for long online, especially when they're one of a kind of vintage items or small production runs of vintage reproduction pieces, and I want all of you be able to avail of as many of the fabulous deals housed with in these posts as possible (and on that note, I may sometimes post coupon codes in these posts for various online stores if I catch wind of one or more that relates to our vintage/fashion/crafting/lifestyle interests).

Perfect for stretching your budget dollars further, giving you a great excuse to treat yourself to a fabulous little "just because" splurge, or perhaps even help deliver that certain vintage item you'd been on the prowl for ages, but couldn't yet find in your price range, I sincerely hope that 25 vintage deals under $100 will provide something worthwhile and enjoyable to every one of you.

And who knows, every now and then I might just "have" to add an item or two from it to my own shopping cart as well! For the sake of helping out the economy, of course! :)

  1. I like the sound of this series of blog posts... vintage prices have escalated over the years but it's good to know that there are still some bargains to be had :)

  2. What an absolutely wonderful selection, it must have taken you ages to trawl online and find these beauties! My top picks would be the Spring tablecloth, and the pink buttons. All too often I find myself lusting after vintage pieces that are far beyond the ability of my purse - I think this is timely advice to look elsewhere, and that there are indeed bargains to be had if you put the effort in to find them.

    1. Thank you very much! The idea hit me like a ton of bricks and I couldn't begin work on it fast enough when it did. It took three days to source the items and write the post, with an average of six to eight hours of work on it per day. That's by now means the most work I've ever put into a single post, but it up there for sure. I didn't, and don't, mind at all though. It was a sincere pleasure to put together and I'm really, really looking forward to the second edition (which I'll likely space out over a larger number of days to cut down on the amount of work needed per day).

I'm really happy to know that this post resonated strongly with you, honey, and hope you'll enjoy all future editions every bit as much.

  3. Love that last scarf/hanky.

It is true that prices have mounted and it seems that salaries have shrunk.

I look forward to the next post in this series.

  4. what a fantastic idea for a series I definitely invest a good amount in my vintage wardrobe but I am working hard to be more mindful of what I spend. Keeping track, only buying what I love, and looking for bargains. I rember when I was in high school 20 years ago that vintage could be bought up for bargain prices, which is sadly no longer the case

  5. This is such a greet idea Jessica! My favourite item is that sweet little vintage basket/handbag. It would go with any spring or summer look. I can't wait for the new season to roll around!

    1. Hi sweet Daffny, thank you very much, that means a lot to me. We (as a society) have been through the ringer in an epic way over the past few years, yet (by and large) it's as though most people try to act like little to nothing has happened, a view that I feel the mainstream media has largely held too after the worst of the early crash subsided. There's no New Deal for this generation though, no (by and large) wage increases to keep up with the rampant inflation, and often not even two pennies to rub together and make ends meet, even when one works around the clock. The economy is not in a good state in the largest and I don't see it improving significantly anytime soon (and I say that as a hardcore optimist). I've always, generally speaking, tried to highlight a lot of budget friendly items in my posts and love that this new series gives me an opportunity to just that in one highly concentrated spot every few weeks.

I'll definitely let you know if I spot the navy Collectif cape anywhere - there's a riding style jacket from them that I would flat out love to find (likely on eBay now) myself. Unlike the cape though, unless I lucked out big time on the second hand market, it would be an investment piece, not quite as wallet friendly a buy as the 25 items in today's post.

  7. Those dainty blue gloves are sorely tempting me! You're right: I like to support the economy by supporting small businesses and I love truly unique fashion, but sometimes the cost can definitely seem prohibitive! But these items certainly seem affordable!

So much so in fact, that I'm already hopping with excitement at the thought of hopefully getting the second edition up in April. I've already started tucking the links for prospective finds away and if they're still available next month, many of them will land in that post.

  11. This is great, I love seeing all the different varieties of gems you have uncovered. It is increasingly difficult to find nice things at practical prices. I find that I don't want to pay a great deal of money for things I can't return or feel comfortable with. It always feels better when you feel like you've gotten a reasonable deal. It's amazing how much vintage can be overpriced. It really is tricky buying over the internet. Thank you for your lovely post! I hope many of these items sell because you've highlighted them.

    1. That's a really good point, dear Joanna, regarding how one can (rightfully so!) be leery of splashing out big time on items that you've not been able to inspect, and if applicable, try on in person. I really love shopping online and generally enjoy the experience immensely, but certainly doesn't mean that I don't approach it haphazardly or with blind faith for one tiny moment. It pays, quite literally! :), to proceed with caution, do your homework, and be very realistic regarding the fact that a given item might not work out well for you once it actually arrives.

Thank you very much for your insightful comment - big hugs!

    1. Oooh, I hear you loud and clear, my dear! Our condo doesn't have a great deal of storage space and the closets are very tiny (yes, I can technically stand in mine, but I can only walk about three or four steps in before hitting the back wall), so I'm always looking for ways to maximize my space. You may have been kidding, but I actually think that's a great idea for a post and may very well do one of that nature down the road. Thank you for planting the seed of inspiration there.

  23. A fun post, on a topic that is near and dear to my heart. My family was definitely one that was tremendously affected by the recession! We are slowly working on a recovery, but clothing is one area where we do not have a lot to play with...so I am always on the hunt for a deal! One of the things I have always loved about vintage is the deals you can find. They may not be as plentiful as they once were but they are still out there if you are willing to hunt them down.

This types of post are great for many reasons, not only as a "money saver" (that we all need). Take me, for example, I can't buy them, since I live far away.. but, they provide massive inspiration.

    Thank you for sharing.

    1. That is a touching and very lovely term for the items highlighted in this new post series, thank you my dear. Many sellers on etsy will ship internationally, so it's possible that some of the items highlighted here and in future editions could become yours, if so desired. I understand though of course about currency conversions, shipping costs and import fees, all of which I get hit with usually when buying anything outside of Canada (and of course there's still shipping costs when buying at a national level).

Thank you, yes, please comment your father on an excellent job of creating that wall. My parents run a decking and renovation business, so it sounds like skilled builders run in both of our families.

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Kate. I did debate what to include or not, but thankfully the problem wasn't compounded by lack of choices. Quite the opposite, there were so many stellar finds that it was tricky to cap the list at "just" 25. I've got most of the others saved still on etsy, so if they haven't sold by the time I put together the second edition in a few weeks, then they may wind up there.

  30. What a fine list—I especially enjoyed seeing the international flair. ;) Also, it is nice to see you including home goods as well; our environment has such an effect on us, and it's important that it be pleasant and enjoyable. I think the same goes for workplaces, too (as former bosses could tell you).

BTW, I peeked in at Spellbound Bows and she has a great deal on four chiffon scarves—$28! A gal could pick up a scarf for each season, or at least four different holidays! And those turquoise gloves...hmmm...

Lovely post, it was fun just to look, to say nothing of adding things to my list.

    1. Hi sweet Jen, I agree so incredibly much with you regarding the impact that our home environment has on our well being and happiness. When there's an area of my own that needs work, organizing, or something to bring it back up to snuff and that isn't able to happen immediately, I always feel a genuine level of stress about it that can even go so far as to put me out of sorts at times. Ideally I want my house to be perfectly organized and to look lovely, too. It doesn't always happen, but that's the goal! :)

That is a really terrific deal for sure! All of her prices are refreshingly low and within the means of most people, which is why I definitely wanted to include one of her items and her shop here.

      Oodles of hugs,

  31. Jessica, I really like how you're finding your vintage deals from small businesses. I'm lucky to live in a town that has some small family owned businesses but for most folks their only choices are the big box stores or the same big box internet sites. Without smaller stores (who have more variety in their merchandise) we are left with only the mass produced items the big boxes contract to have manufactured.

Anyway, I love the items you've posted. The skirt and sunglasses are my favorites!

    1. Hi lovely Sarah, thank you very much for your comment. I'm an ardant supporter of small business, online and off, and completely agree with that we must keep as many of them as possible alive lest the whole world (or at least the bulk of it) become nothing more than lackluster, impersonal big box store chains. I'm not opposed to such chains existing in general (and readily admit to shopping at some of them sometimes, especially since I live in a small town that doesn't have a lot of local shopping options for certain things), but I don't ever want them to ever overshadow and destroy all those who are on lower rungs of the retail ladder.

I loved that skirt and those sunnies, too! Lucky ladies who get to add each one to their warm weather wardrobe!

  32. Of course I went straight to look at more vintage buttons when the last thing I need is more buttons!

Some beautiful and tempting items, and wise words about money (both in this post and your 2012 one). How we choose to manage our money is so much more important than how much of it we have (once our basic needs are met) and affordable treats are good happiness builders. I just have to often remind myself to stick to things I can actually use more of (not buttons, and not a non-working organ from the Salvos, even if it was only $60!).

  33. Jessica, thank you for all your hard work in uncovering these little beauties. I have always tried to shop small and local where possible. Looking forward to seeing more little treats.

  34. What a lovely idea, and since I've just started working part time (I'm having Wednesday off, and it's FABULOUS!!!) I also have to watch my money more closely, so deals are just what I need. :) Having a day off means you roughly earn about 20% less than full time, but son has moved and I consider it a gift to myself. I have never been happier. There were several shops in you wonderful list that I will check out later today. Thank you for taking your time to make this lovely list for us, I cannot wait for the next round. Have a lovely day, dear. :)

    1. It's my sincere pleasure, sweet Sanne! Your shop, with it's awesomely reasonable prices, will certainly be one I'll be checking for future editions and highly recommend everyone check out anytime.

      Oodles of hugs,

    1. I echo your comment, sweet dear! They might just do a number on my wallet, too! I was certainly swooning up a storm and whipping out mighty amounts of will power while putting this inaugural edition together. Perhaps I should set aside a few dollars in my budget specifically to treat myself to a little something special each time I write one of these posts, that way I won't risk feeling left out of all the great bargain shopping to be had in them.

Big hugs & many thanks for your lovely comment,

    1. Thank you very much, honey!!! You bet, while I won't go so far as to say that a new one will appear ever month without fail (it took three days of six to eight hours solid each day to put together; in the future I'll be starting sooner and spacing the work out over more days hopefully), I will be aiming for such, so they'll definitely be lots more great find bargains for you to shop! :) If there's ever anything in particular that I can help you find online (bargain priced or otherwise), please don't hesitate to ask. I'm super happy to help!

  37. Ooooh, I adore this new series! I'm a big fan of keeping a sense of style even while living frugally, and you've chosen a fantastic selection of items. I'm particularly smitten with that circle skirt and the beautiful salt and pepper shakers.

  38. First off I cannot 'amen' you enough about the heart of this post!! This is a depression, even if a minor one compared to that of the 1930s, and it feels like everyone has their head in the sand about it. We're a family on a budget and we're frugal, but thankfully I think we've gone through this so far unscathed. However, at least in the US things haven't improved much and our debt is so freakin' ridiculous. Ugh, I'm going to stop here before I just ramble on and annoy myself even further.

Second, I adore some of these pieces so much. I think my favorite has to be the puppy dog scarf. So adorable. I am adding it and a few other pieces to my watch list. :D I look forward to more on this series. I love how you so openly address the economy with vintage enthusiasts because the price of vintage hasn't changed {except in some cases has raised because of gas prices, etc...} and it can be difficult for us to keep building our collection as our dollars {or whatever your currency is} has been drastically changed.

    1. Thank you deeply, dear Sean. It's a depression through and through - and one without any major help from the government to aid the situation and try and get things back on track. There's no no deal, no significant hikes in raises (let alone minimum wage), no epic plan to set the balances at least a little closer to right again. Nada! People are, for the most part, simply left to fend for themselves as the world's economy continues to go to pot in so many places and ours here in North American inches along, but hasn't even remotely gotten back to a pre-recession/depression level. Will it? I sure as heck hope so, but only time will tell. If it does, I think it will be a very, very long time in coming.

Absolutely! I call things as I see them and have no qualms doing so. Vintage prices have skyrocketed in recent years and affording genuine vintage items, especially if you're buying online, is becoming harder and harder for many folks to do (at least on a frequent basis and/or if you're looking to buy multiple items a month). I want to shine the spotlight on a hefty number of good deals every month, while they're still to be had with a bit of forging, and am so happy that this post (as well as certain others, such as the Vintage Fashionista Friday series), allows me to do just that. I have a great feeling about this series and am already bubbling with excitement to write the second edition.

Thank you again very much & have a stellar day, sweet dear!

  39. Indeed Jessica, in these times we have to stretch our money - it's a great idea to do this series.
    I love the puppy scarf!

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Lorena. I adore that puppy scarf so much, too! It was one of the items that I was most tempted to buy here for myself, but ultimately I didn't as it wouldn't be right to post about it for others and then snatch it up myself.

Big hugs & many heartfelt thanks for all of your awesome comments this past weekend,
      ♥ Jessica
