Celebrating Annie's 1st birthday with 25 darling black and white vintage dog photos

This past Wednesday, the 15th, marked Annie, our darling American Bullador’s first birthday. Small enough to sleep on our chests and be cradled in our hands when we first brought her home at the age of eight weeks, she's been with us now for ten of the twelve months of her young life and has impacted ours in countless ways over that time.

Incredibly smart, unendingly energetic, extremely destructive, as kindhearted as any animal who has ever lived, an amazing watchdog, and strong willed as the day is long, Annie is both a big handful and an incredible angel. Though she is very much still a puppy in certain ways, we're starting to see her mature more in recent weeks and hope that by this time next year, she'll be much closer to reaching her adult temperament and way of behaving (guided, of course, by our ongoing training, lots of exercise and affection).

Annie was the first dog either my husband or myself, whether in our years together or before we meet, ever had as an adult and raising her has certainly been an incredibly eye-opening experience. We've learned an encyclopedic amount about dog rearing and training over that the past ten months and while we didn't always get things 100% right (off the bat at least) with Annie, few new parents (be they of pets or human babies) can say that they did the first time around. Just as Annie has grown and matured, so too have we and though there have been moments since we brought Annie home when she frazzled my nerves to the point of tears, there have been countless more where she nearly made me cry from happiness, love and pride.

She is an awesome, inspiring, sweetheart of a dog and I feel honoured and blessed that we get to share our lives with her. In celebration of her first birthday (for which she was showered with an abundance of her favourite dog treats and a Kong filled with peanut butter, one of her all time favourite foods, as well as a gorgeous new pink leash that we bought her at the Home Hardware in Osoyoss last month), Annie and I have rounded up an endearingly sweet array of 25 black and white vintage real world photos of precious puppies and darling dogs, all of which are so cute and easy to relate to that they more than speak - or would that be bark - for themselves. :)

Gilda Radner once said, "I think dogs are the most amazing creatures; they give unconditional love. For me they are the role model for being alive", a sentiment which Annie has brought to light in my life every day that we've had her.

Yes, she may be a handful and a half sometimes, but she is also inspiringly upbeat, happy-go-lucky, and caring (she has an uncanny ability to sense, if we're out in public around other people, and then make a beeline for anyone who has mental, emotional or physical special needs, or seems to really be in need of some companionship, and to then shower them with kisses and affection - it's humblingly beautiful to see, especially since we've never trained her to do so, it's simply something she's inherently knows to do on her own.

Annie is 60+ pounds of pure love wrapped in a silken black and white coat, always ready to bestow an unending amount of her time and affection on you. She derives joy for the littlest things, forgives and forgets in mere minutes, never sweats the small stuff, and is powerful reminder of how we should each strive to exist as often as possible. She is our baby, our dearest canine friend, and a truly phenomenal one year old dog that we love every bit as much as she adores us.

  11. How does one say a "happy birthday" to a canine? Would a simple song suffice? (Just to be sure, I'll check my trusty etiquette books)
    Here goes:

    Dear Annie,
I don't speak dog language but please accept this "Woof Woof" as meaning Happy Birthday.
    Sincerely, Marija

Let her know I wish her all the best, and may she never have a single flea bite!

  13. "for me, the are the roll model of how to live" oh gosh that says it all, right? No matter how often we leave them or forget to feed them or anything, they just sit and smile and listen to us talk or sing or cry. Whenever I leave (even for five minutes to go get the mail) my dog sits and howls at the door and when I get back, she jumps around and barks. Sometimes its so annoying im like, dog, please, I've been gone 2 minutes, not 2 days! but my mom recently told me, "you'll never have know anyone more forgiving, more understanding and more happy to spend every single moment of their lives with you than your dog. Everyone needs some time alone except for dogs, she'll love you forever."
Thanks for this wonderful post (I kept saying "awwww")
    and tell Annie happy birthday!

Thank you very much for your wonderfully lovely comment, dear Abigail. Tons of hugs to you and your sweet pup.

    1. Annie wanted the spotlight to be on her vintage peers in this post. :)

Seriously though, she's very hard to photograph, as she rarely sits still and isn't too keen on cameras, but she's getting a little better on both counts as she gets older. You're right though, I should have included a snap of her here, too - I wrote this post, as I do so many of mine, in the wee hours of the night and she was sleeping at the time, so it didn't cross my mind to take a snap of her. To make up for it, here's a link to my favourite Instagram photo of her from back when she was a wee little puppy: http://instagram.com/p/XiC6TAGFTt/ (and here's another fave of mine: http://instagram.com/p/aQv7WqGFal/).

    1. Thank you very much, sweetheart! I thought that last snap was especially smile-inducingly adorable, too, which is why I capped off the post with it. Annie wasn't a fan of brooms or vacuums when she was younger, but she's come to make peace with them, which is great (we helped her reach that point by working with her to overcome of dislike of them using food rewards and positive reinforcement when she didn't bark at the broom/vacuum).

    1. It really is - she brings such joy into both of our lives. Yes, she's been a huge handful at times (for example, she has completely destroyed some of our furniture and done some damage to our walls with her chewing), but when all is said and done, the happiness she brings into our lives far outweighs these adolescent bad behaviour bumps in the road (all of which, of course, we try our best to correct and train her not to do!).

Thank you for the wonderfully nice birthday wishes, honey.

Big hugs from both Annie and I,

  28. I love all animals really but dogs have a special place in my heart, so you can imagine how much I love these photographs! You already love your dog, but I'm pretty sure the best is yet to come...one of my terriers was a handful until age 1, including a very destructive tendency to chew (we lost a table and chairs and she even chewed a fitted kitchen! How expensive is that?!). She's still got that mischievous streak, needs a lot of walking, and does need regularly bone destruction sessions, but to say she is my most faithful companion and lights up my days would not be an exaggeration. Happy birthday to Annie, here's wishing you lots more fun on your canine adventures in the future!

    1. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and experience regarding having a fellow destructive dog under your roof (which, I'm sure, both our pups would chew, if they could get their paws on it). I can fully understand the expense that your terrier's chewing has caused. Earlier in her life, especially before we introduced crate training (big mistake there - we should have started her with it from day one!!!), Annie wrecked (and I do mean wrecked - we've long since hauled their tattered remains to the dump) our (super comfy) couch and love seat, a reclining chair, our coffee table, a small side table, a wooden chair we used as a decorative piece, numerous blankets, some throw pillows, the dog bed we bought her as a puppy, countless dog toys, and sundry other small items (including a couple belts and and three pairs of shoes).

She's also severely chewed (one day we'll toss them when we've found replacements and she's no longer chewing everything she possibly can) the stand our TV was on, our wonderful mahogany dinning room table (legs) and all the chairs, the gorgeous quilted blanket on our bed (that's the only thing she's somehow ever managed to chew under our watch - everything else was done when we were either asleep or not home), the wooden stand/side table our vintage repro style radio is on, some record (music records), a couple of small appliances, at least three of her leashes and a dog harass, scores of tea and dish towels, and no doubt numerous other things I've all but blocked the memory of, in addition to doing serious damage to some of the walls, baseboards, cupboards, and other such items on the main floor of our house (we use a tall metal baby gate to keep her from getting upstairs unless we're there, that way there's no risk of her doing damage - unless she got through the gate without us knowing, which hasn't happened yet thankfully - we're not around).

Areas of my house are furniture less and less than ideal looking, and I would do things so differently with Annie and her chewing if I could go back in time, but I can't and ultimately everything can be replaced or fixed, but this has all certainly been a very expensive and eye-opening experience to say the lest!

We exercise her for hours a day (walks, dog park, play dates, indoor exercise as we don't have a yard of our own, etc), use crate training, and have of course always done what we could to deter her chewing (including installing a security camera with two way audio on the main floor of our house so we could see what she's up to when we're not on that floor). She doesn't give a toss about the "anti-chew" sprays (we've bought every one available for sale in our town and tried numerous online recommendations there, too, like using vinegar or various spices) and will chew anything she possible can, especially if she hasn't just been heavily exercised. That said, I think she is getting a little better on that front in very recent times, as she hasn't yet wrecked her lasted blanket (we discovered that she's much less apt to chew blankets that don't have stuffing, so we got her a knit one for just a few dollars at a local thrift store), and it's my sincere hope that she continues to improve massively on the chewing front as she gets older. I really want to have a presentable house with furniture on the main floor again, so she better! :)

Big hugs to you and your precious pets,
      ♥ Jessica

    2. We did exactly the same thing (we had never had puppies before, although my husband had dogs in the past). We just assumed they would sleep all night in their basket, not go rampaging through the kitchen chomping everything in sight! Needless to say they now sleep (on cosy beds with blankets) in their crates at night and this does no harm at all. It also means I can sleep peacefully! I think another time I would get an older dog but if I ever had a puppy again sleeping in a crate at night would definitely be on my training list.

I did see a genuine difference with age (interestingly it's my female dog that chews the most) as she learnt what was and wasn't hers to chew. We also tried what seemed like everything on the market. The only toys that I have found that can survive her jaws are made by a company called Orka. They are blue plastic, the male terrier plays with one of these balls every day and they last months (although not very cheap to start with). Another distraction is their favorite bones which are the ones you can buy filled with tripe. They smell foul but they seem to find it interesting extracting the filling as well as chewing the hide on the outside.

As for exercise the female dog (who is the healthiest) has a walk for an hour to an hour and a half a day - quite a challenge for me as you can imagine, although ultimately it does us both good. I find it more manageable to do two or more shorter walks per day than one big long one which tends to make me very tired. If I am exhausted I ask another family member to do it and on the odd occasion I am out we use a dog walker. Missing exercise isn't really an option, we have learnt over the years! I don't know anything about bulladors I am afraid, but that seems to be an OK amount of exercise for a terrier.

I too lived with chewed furniture for quite a few years so I really empathise with that whole somewhat scruffy furniture feel. I didn't replace any until I was sure that phase was over and I still bought a second hand table and chairs just in case (although I do like them). I wouldn't replace anything until you're sure Annie has stopped as it can be very disheartening. There is still some chewed skirting in our kitchen that I really need to sand and paint, then the house will be almost respectable again!

It's amazing how challenging having a new dog can be. Looking back I just saw those puppies as lovely little bundles of fur who could do no wrong and were just there for me to pet. What I needed to do was take control and learn to say NO! Well I have grown and so have they - I truly hope Annie does the same, as dogs really are worth all the (at times) pain, as you point out. You'll never have a more faithful companion than your dog!

    3. Thank you very much for sharing more of your dog rearing knowledge with me, I sincerely appreciate it and find comfort in knowing we're not the only family out there who has had a dog try to eat them out of house and home (actually, compared to some stories I've ever, even from folks at our local dog park, Annie is not the world's most destructive dog by any means).

Kong brand toys are the only one's Annie hasn't managed to destroy yet (and then, just the really thick rubber cones that they make). She doesn't really go at her toys like she wants to "kill" them, she's just so powerful that regular chewing is enough to have them in tatters in minutes. We've tried scores of brands, including those made from fire hose material, and there isn't a soft toy around she won't wreck within an hour to a day at most. I wish there was one that could stand up to her powerful jaws longer, she really loves playing with toys. Thankfully though, she does get tennis balls at the park to play with (she's awesome at playing fetch - that's the lab in her big time!).

I completely agree with you about holding off until her chew drive has subsided or at least been greatly reduced before investing in new furniture. The one exception there is that we do want to buy an inexpensive couch, as there's presently no furniture at all to sit on in our living room before of Annie and as a result we're not able to use that room, including to watch TV. We're looking for an affordable secondhand one here locally at the moment. Not much luck yet, but hopefully soon.

It is really interesting to me that your female dog chewed more. As Annie is a girl, that makes me wonder if female dogs are more prone to being chewers or if that point is determined more by breed (or other factors) than sex. Whatever the case, it certainly is a trait that seems to be quite common, whether at a small or epic sized scale.

Thank you again very much - here's to the ups, downs, and ultimate joys of being a dog owner.

      ♥ Jessica

    1. Hi sweet Emma, thank you very much for the lovely birthday wishes for Miss Annie. I can relate completely. In the first few places Tony and I lived, we weren't allowed to have any pets, then at our last apartment (in Toronto) we could have a cat, so we got our darling girl Stella (who's nearly 5.5 years old now). When we moved to Penticton and got our own little condo, it meant we could finally have a dog, too (though even here, the strata that governs all the condos in our "block" doesn't permit homeowners to have more than two cats or dogs total, so we're maxed out on that front :)). I sincerely hope that you're next home will be pet friendly and that you guys can get a darling dog of your own at long last.

      Big hugs,

  33. Happy birthday, Annie! All of these photos are so smile-inducing, but then, we're a dog person myself (as the lady at church who pointed out a tuft of collie hair on my black skirt this morning can ALSO attest).

The photo of the little girl hugging her big black dog near the top is especially adorable, and those three gals (sisters, perhaps—I've not clicked through yet) are especially charming, though the stylish gal leaning against a Cord with an Afghan hound on the leash of course caught my eye.

I'm glad to hear Annie has brought both of you such joy and, ahhh, excitement. ;) It really is amazing how deeply dogs endear themselves to us, and how much they teach us when we think we're the ones doing the work!

Hope Annie received some sort of special treat for her big day!

  34. Happy Birthday to your pup! I was honestly thinking (for some strange reason…I really don't know what brought on this thought) this morning that it had been a while since you had posted about your dog and I was going to message you and suggest you post an update! Ah…great minds…right?! haha!
I can certainly relate your puppy training woes. Dave was a handful when he was little. Thankfully he wasn't terribly destructive, mostly just energetic. He still bears some small scars from minor frostbite on each ear when he was too stubborn to come inside when he was a year old. He was too fast for me to catch him and Nick wasn't home. I stupidly tried to chase him into the house, but he thought this was the best game we could possibly play!! Silly dog…
Dave is four and a half now and he's calmed down significantly. I hope your Annie does too with age…I'm sure she will. :)

Hope you had a great weekend!
(I've still got my eye out for your snow gear! I've been busy with work, that's why I haven't replied to your email yet)

    1. That is thoroughly uncanny timing, my goodness! You and I are so often on the same wave length though, sweet Lisa, that I'm not entirely surprised (great minds for sure!). Aww, I'm happy to know that this post helped deliver juts the update you were hoping for.

Oh no, I'm very sorry that his stubborn nature resulted in him getting frostbitten, the poor little darling! Annie is super energetic and quite strong willed too, so I can certainly relate to a dog who has a mind of their own. It's great that Dave has calmed down somewhat as he's gotten older. I see subtle indications that Annie may as well, though I think we're a long ways from that point still.

You're such a sweetheart, thank you for your help on that front. I recently (night before last) ordered a cute vintage-y looking winter scarf with a Nordic style pattern on it from one of those big Asian fashion accessories sellers on eBay for just $10.00, which I think would go well with the kind of ski look(s) I'm hoping to put together.

Many thanks for everything & have an awesome Monday,

    1. Thank you very much, darling Rochelle (and Lucille). It is hard to believe that's a year old now! March 18th will mark one year since we brought this (now not so) little bundle of fury joy into our lives. Thank you very much for your concern about her health. It turned out to be a case canine papillomas virus, and thankfully the biopsy did not detect the presence of cancer in the growth she had removed. We now know that this condition is startlingly common in dogs under the age of two years (Annie was 11 months when she started showing signs of it), but had not heard of it before. Luckily if it does return (aka, new growths develop) there are certain topical ointments and natural remedies (like vitamin E) that you can use to try and help reduce/get rid of the growths if they're still on the smaller side of things. Annie bounced back at the speed of light from her surgery, had her stitches out the weekend before last and is as good (and energetic!) as ever. I truly appreciate your caring concern, my dear friend, thank you again.

    3. {{{Hugs!}}} Thank you so much! It really was fantastic news - we were both shuddering to think that something really serious might have befallen such a young pup. Luckily such was not the case, the growth was removed in surgery (and isn't cancerous), and she hasn't developed any further ones (and may not - the vet says that sometimes it's just a once off experience) and she's the picture of health once more.

I'll give her a huge snuggle and some extra treats for you - please do the same for your darling girl for me, too.

      Tons of hugs,
