(BTW, yes, I do realize that I'm on something of a fruit pun title kick this month. I knew I could only keep my love of cute puns under wraps for so long!)

Hands down, bar none, autumn is my favourite season of the year. Each of the four have their shining points, their worthwhile merits and reasons why I enjoy and treasure them, but at the end of the day, there's just no comparing (in my books) to autumn's sublime beauty, crisp temperatures, bountiful harvest, festive celebrations, and that fact that it houses our wedding anniversary.

Though the cherry growing season - which usually happens here in the Okanagan Valley throughout July - is behind us now, before the we dig too much deeper into my beloved autumn, I wanted to share these photos that were taken a while back when one could have probably found a few cherries on the branch still.

I know that some people view cherries (or at least the wearing of them) as almost being a twee, over-used way to express one's interest in vintage fashion, but I think that's flat out silly. If - like me - you just happen to love cherries (I grew up in a town with thousands of cherry trees and spent each summer picking and helping my mom can cherries, which is when I fell in love with anything depicting these juicy red fruits) and vintage, then by all means wear that combination until the cows come home, if you so desire.

Much as I adore cherries, it struck me as I was sitting down to write this post that I don't actually have too many items in my wardrobe featuring them. In fact, you're viewing the bulk of what I have in one swift go here. There are a few other accessories though, which I'm sure you'll get to see over the course of time. And while I might not have too many pieces with cherries on them at the moment, I certainly have a fair number whose hue - like this eye-catching vintage purse and pair of bright red gloves - are redolent of sun-ripened cherries.

These shots were taken in the neighbouring community of Naramata (which you may recall me chatting about in this post from last May) on a charming, itty-bitty slice of beach that's owned by a local church, but which is open to the general public when not in use for church related activities.

It's a gorgeous little spot - no matter the season - with a small pier that includes (as you can see in these snaps) a lifeguard's chair (you know, that day very may have been the first time I've ever sat in one), a few serenely pretty willow trees, and nice stretch of sand which I spent a few moments barefoot in after we'd finished shooting.

On the peaceful, sunshine filled afternoon when we were there, only two other people were at the beach, so it was almost as though we had the whole place to ourselves. A point which certainly made getting unobstructed photos as easy, and fun, as (cherry) pie! Smile

  1. Oh, gorgeous! I especially love your cheery red gloves and sparkly cherry pin. I've been lusting after apples and strawberries in a similar style...

  2. Thank you very much, hon! If you happen to find any (strawberries or apples) akin this brooch for a good price, please let me know as I'd love to pick some up, too.

  3. As someone who wears black/white/grey almost exclusively, I have to tell you that you wear colors very well! I'm envious. You also reminded me of a tiny, sparkly cherry necklace I've had for years. Maybe I'll wear it tomorrow and try some color, too.

    1. What a beautiful compliment, thank you very much! I adore colour, be it whisper soft or rainbow bright, and really do believe everyone can wear hue if they so desire.

How charming! I have a sparkly little cherry necklace, too, that I just adore and wear on a fairly frequent basis. If you post photos of it on your blog, be sure to let me know, I'd love to see your cherry necklace.

  4. Hi Jessica,

Yes, that is a very nice location. It is good for the church in allowing it to be open to the public when not in use.

I simply love your Old Navy green sweater and blue 1950 skirt! Your cherry pin is very pretty. Little details are such fun.

Are not gloves just spectacular! Gloves are one fashion that I would like to see reestablished, so graceful and elegant.

You are so right; people should wear what they love. I have always thought it silly that people marvel over famous people who do it but laugh at the average person on the street who does it. I am NOT a fan of Madonna; however, back in the 80s when she dressed with some style of the 50s and wore bright red lipstick, I decided: If she can wear whatever she wants, then I can too!

    1. Good morning Hope, thank you very much for your lovely comment. I completely agree that it would be wonderful to gloves come back into mainstream fashion again, but baring momentary trends perhaps (they had a bit of a resurgence in the 80s - and of course fingerless ones are popular with those who enjoy punk and goth fashions), I seriously doubt it's going to happen any time soon.

No worries though, I love wearing and collecting them, and search for budget-friendly pairs in hues and styles I don't have quite often etsy and eBay (I recently got burned a bit with a mixed lot I bought on eBay though, as several of the pairs, which weren't listed as being damaged, are damaged beyond repair - so I might be sticking to etsy a bit more for gloves - or perhaps just avoiding mixed lots!).

    2. Jessica, That is what makes me cautious about buying things on line. By daughter recently purchased a package of earrings, and many of them were old, tarnished, undesirable things, which was something they were careful not to show in the photo.

So, you have had good experiences on Etsy, then?

    3. Hi Hope, over all I've had very good experiences on eBay over the years (I've been using the site for about 8.5 years now), but have run into a few more issues there than on etsy (though, to be fare, I've had higher number of transactions on eBay, so that could certainly be a factor in that point, too).

I guess I just had to voice my experience with that recent glove lot, as it was a bit of a let down for sure. I think the lot had about 20 pairs of gloves, and maybe 10 of them are wearable right now or could be salvaged, the others are too far gone. I've almost never thrown away a damaged vintage item, but these are in tatters pretty much (amazingly, the eBay photos didn't show the damage and the seller didn't mention it in the listing) so I may have to part with them (unless I save them for use in craft pieces - no idea what, but at least then they'd continue to live on in some capacity).

I'm sorry to hear that your daughter recently ran into a similar experience, I'm sure she was a bit miffed by that situation, too.

I've had really good experiences on etsy, yes. There have been a couple of less than stellar sellers, but overall, I have only the utmost of positive things to say about those I've done business with so far.

    4. Thank you, Jessica, for your reply to my question. I guess you have to take a few bad hits, but overall, it is a good way to acquire vintage items.

  5. Very cute! I wore cherry this weekend. I love strawberries first and cherries are a close second. I think you look great and complemented the outfit very well. I like Autumn a lot too. It gives you a chance of wearing thicker clothing without being cooked alive.

  6. You look so beautiful, that top looks just so perfect on you, the colour really suits your skin tone! I hope gloves come back into fashion again, i'm off to ebay to see if I can get a red pair like yours! Gorgeous.

  8. Hi Jessica,
Happy October! It has benn felling like autumn finally here in PA. Very nice outfit and I love the red purse! Finding a vintage treasure is so much fun, especially at a great price. Imagine the stories these pieces would tell if they could speak!!

This lady, which I've bought from, does really great custom pieces for the frugal vintage gal. One of the items was a 40s wrap cherry print dress. You might message her and ask about it. I think it was $35???

Anyway, love your ensemble. I love cherries, too. I'm eager to wear my wooden cherry pin I got in the giveaway months ago.

  10. October!!! I am thrilled it is October as well! :D

And I simply ADORE this outfit! It is just so happy and perky and delightful in every day! Who cares if cherries are "out of season".

Regarding cherries as a chiche, I think it all depends in the way you "use" them. This is perfect with no chiches! :)

  15. I think the cherries look great, especially your brooch. Marilyn Monroe wore a wonderful white dress with cherries on it in The Misfits, and there was nothing twee about her!
I like this outfit very much, the colours work well together, and I like that your bangles always pick up the colours in the clothes.

  19. I found your cherry wardrobe outfit to be quite sharp. The deep red colors are simply perfect, and work very well with your skin tone. Each time I come here, you keep modeling a new adorable outfit! I think you need to get into vintage fashion design "on the side." You model quite well also. :)

Also, I LOVED the photo shoot location! Anything outdoors in nature is always a favorite for me. It looks like a very peaceful place to visit. Humm . . . too bad I couldn't build a house out there and live.

    Blessings!

    1. Hello dear Mara, you're exceedingly kind, thank you very much for the beautiful compliments. I'm not much of an illustrator or sewer (in the case of the later though, it's just lack of training beyond home ec basics), but would adore the chance to design vintage inspired fashions one day, and am so touched that you thought that about me.

It is a gorgeous little corner of the world for sure - where most water front reality sells for a pretty penny indeed. A house on the water (somewhere here in the Okanagan) is a dream of my angler husband though, so if one (distant day) we are ever fortunate enough to have one, please know you have an open invitation to stay with us.

  29. What a lovely setting you have there, so calm and tranquil. That little top is very sweet and looks super soft. As always the bold colours look so nice on you. What lovely memories you have of cherries, all these things from our childhood go along way to making us the people we are, don't they?
Although I have no such emotional connection with cherries I love them too and would dearly love a cherry brooch.I am waiting for the right brooch to come along...I've been waiting a while...but you can't rush it I suppose... and there are so many things on my vintage wishlist.

    1. Thank you for your lovely comment, dear gal. I completely understand what you mean regarding holding off for just the right version of your vintage wish list/holy grail items. I'm very often the same way, too, especially if my wallet stands to take a bruising from my purchase. If you don't truly love something, you're not as apt to wear it and will likely wish you'd just held off all together. So often patience is key when searching for vintage pieces.

  30. Hi completely sweet ladies,

Thank you all very much for your comments. It's funny, you know, while these colours are certainly punchy, they don't strike me as being super bright, but I can tell many of you would beg to differ (I guess that having grown up in an era of hot pink, neons, and Kool-Aid worthy brights, these colours seem fairly tame by comparison :) ).

Sending tons more thanks & oodles of cheerful Wednesday wishes out to all of you,
    ♥ Jessica

  31. Can't say no to cherries. Don't have much myself, just some earrings and heels and a half sown cherry dress but definitely an option for prints of the future. Love the Bakelite looking jewellery. Matches perfectly. I wish I could get some Bakelite. I found an amazing collection at a market once and my jaw dropped at the price. It's hard to find it genuine and not overly pricy. So yours, whether imitation or the real deal, are absolutely lovely. Oops, babbling... :)

    1. Hi sweet gal, many thanks for your lovely comment. Not babbling at all - I love to be chatting with my blog comments sometimes, too, so I'd never mind if someone else did the same thing.

No, these cute bracelets aren't Bakelite - though they do a fairly nice job of pulling off the same kind of look. Bakelite is very, very hard to find in person here in my little corner of Canada and the few pieces I've seen have been jaw-droppingly expensive, so I can fully relate. As of yet I don't have any Bakelite jewelry in my collection, but I'd completely love to and hope to add at least a piece or two at some point. Hope you're able to do the same thing, too, hon.
