If some of these photos look as though they were shot from a bit of a distance, that's because they were. :)

As discussed in this recent Heyday Twizzle Dress outfit post, Tony and I have found ourselves taking snaps on bridges a fair bit lately - the most exciting of which was this lovely suspension bridge located in the beautiful little town of Castlegar, BC.

Castlegar was one of the many places that we were able to spend some time in while on our brief, wonderfully fun weekend getaway to the Kootenays in mid-April and while there, we discovered Zuckerberg Island Park (no relation to Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg; instead it's named after a famous Russian humanitarian and pacifist, Alexander Zuckerberg, who immigrated to Canada and went on to teach school to some of the local Doukhobor children there) which included this seriously cool bridge.

We'd never shot on a suspension one before, so when this location presented itself, the camera was promptly called into action!

Given the rather wobbly nature of even the sturdiest suspension bridges, as Tony was handholding his DSLR for this shoot, he had to stand a fair ways back (on solid ground) to get these shots, but I think that they still came out really nicely and I just love having a series of snaps taken on such a unique location overlooking the beautiful confluence of both the Kootenay and the Columbia Rivers.

It was a medium warm day that partially sunny Saturday afternoon, so I couldn't resist the urge to sport my absolute favourite 1950s sundress - and yes, that is saying a lot, as I usually have a very hard time singling out faves in any category of my clothing.

It's easy as pie with this beautiful dress though (that, coincidentally, just like the great burgundy hat that I'm sporting here, came from Garb-Oh Vintage on Etsy), which I purchased in early 2015.

I'd been hunting for a dress with raspberries - my absolute all-time favourite fruit - for longer than I can recall and continually came up empty-handed, at least in terms of ones that would fit both my measurements and wallet.

In general, raspberries are a rather under represented fruit in the fashion world (past or present) and hitting upon a novelty print garment that includes them is almost like striking gold (at least for me it is! :)).

Now, objectively, I can't say with complete certainty that the berries in this print are raspberries, but they very much look the part and I'm more than willing to call them such. They're woodland berries of some sort at the very least and are partnered with other forest foliage here, such as springs of evergreen branches and various green leaves, to up their straight-from-nature factor all the more.

This vintage dress is sleeveless and includes a very pretty ruched neckline with a fun little tie detail in the center of it. It's a light, but sturdy, cotton that suits the warmer months sublimely and when you factor in the colour palette - that stars so many of my most beloved hues - it's easy to see why this dress gets top billing in my books.

There are hints of salmony orange-pink in its palette, so for an added burst of colour, I teamed this fifties frock with a coral cardigan. I pulled from the colours in the print for my hat, glove, bag and shoe choices as well, and then opted for relatively understated gold tone metal jewelry, to keep the emphasis on the garments themselves.

This hat is another truly beloved favourite of mine, which is now making it's fourth, I believe, appearance here in under a year - and I'm sure you'll continue to see it many more times as the months and years roll on. I adore, and wear a lot of, burgundy, so this wonderful c. 1930s/1940s felt hat couldn't be a more ideal fit for my wardrobe.

It's hard to believe that a month and half have already whizzed past since the lovely spring day on which these photos were captured (on what definitely stands as one of the most exciting spots we've ever shoot in before). Summer weather is barreling down on us now and as such this dress will no doubt continue to see much outfit action as the hottest days of the season envelope us.

This is the second and last of the two shoots that we took in the Kootenays, though we did grab some snaps later in the day once we'd returned to Penticton of what I wore on the drive home and those will be appearing here in the near future.

We adored our brief getaway to this rugged, mountain and river bedecked corner of the province, and as touched on in my first post about visiting the Kootenays, definitely hope to get back there together many more times throughout our life.

At the moment though, we're home in the Okanagan and continuing to contemplate where our proposed summertime road trip may lead us to.

No plans are set in stone quite yet, but we're getting closer and I can hardly wait to see where we, and our trusty camera, will land next in this gorgeous province of ours!

  1. Great photos, a bridge really does give a nice perspective for an outfit shoot! I have to say I love all of these colours you're wearing, there's something a tad Autumnal but then that peachy colour and the lime belt pulls it back into being more summery. Beautiful xx

    1. There really is - and while not intentional, such doesn't surprise me at all. Fall's hues are my favourite of the year and generally the most becoming on me, so at times it's all I can do not to sport them the whole year 'round. :)

Thank you very much for you wonderfully nice comment and compliments, sweet Porcelina.

    1. I absolutely adore the neckline here, too. I don't usually gravitate towards lower ones, yet not all styles of higher ones work well on me (square and collar-less styles, for example, can both be tricky), but scooping, boat neck, and sweetheart styles are often kind to me, so I reach for them often and just love the flattering scoop style here.

Big hugs & many thanks for your lovely comment,

  7. Absolutely amazing as always, Jessica. And I agree, raspberries are underrepresented in the novelty fruit print world. Shame really, they're cute fruit.
And aren't bridges fun to photograph!

I'm delighted to say that our June is indeed off to a good start. May was a bit of a "meh" month on a lot of fronts - super damp weather included - but June has been considerably sunnier so far and I feel like it's going to develop into a terrific start of the summer. I really hope that all is well on your end, too, honey.

  9. I can certainly see why this is your favorite summer dress. It is so sweet and it really seems like the most perfect Jessica dress ever. I love suspension bridges. They don't have them around here but there were a lot of them where I grew up in the Northwest of the US which would pretty much be the same as the Southwest of Canada which is where you are!

We really don't have many around these parts either (in the Okanagan, I mean - this charmer was in the Kootenays), though after this experience, I'm going to be looking harder for the the few that do exist and trying to get to them in due time for future outfit snaps. :)

  10. What a lovely outfit Miss Jessica! The colors are amazing and so is the floral print. What a scenic spot for a photo, but I don't know suspension bridges sound like it wouldn't be good for my unbearable fear of heights. Still love the outfit and lovely scenery.

    1. I understand that completely. Heights aren't my all-time favourite thing either, though thankfully I didn't feel any sense of trepidation in this case. The thing involving heights that turns my knees to mush the quickest actually, is when I'm standing on a glass/Plexiglas floor, such as those that some tall observations towers, such as the CN Tower in Toronto, have. Even though I know that logically they can hold many times my weight, I always have an irrational concern that they're going to break the moment I step foot on them.

    1. Thank you very much, sweet dear. Finding true vintage garments, especially dresess and skirts, in anything but microscopic sizes can be more of a challenge for sure, but doing so is definitely possible. I specifically try, for example, to source a wide range of garment sizes (plus sizes very much included, for example) for my Etsy shop and can attest that there still a fair number of pieces in bigger than "toothpick width" sizes out there. Please don't hesitate to let me know if there's anything in particular I can ever try to keep an eye out for you on the vintage fashion front, sweet dear.

  13. Hello Jessica! What a surprise, this post is adorable .. a beautiful natural setting, your dress so delicate and feminine, reminds me that today is June 2 and spring is around us (but here today is a very Feast of the Republic winter, rains and the mountains are covered by mist), the fantasy of your dress is really pretty, the color of the accessories is perfect (your gloves are beautiful, I admire you because remember to wear them "a real lady never goes out without gloves"). . and then you're brave! I'm not sure I got on the suspension bridge! I'm a real wimp !!! Thanks to this festive day I visited today the bomb shelters of Campo Tizzoro, are the largest in the world and there underneath it all is as it was in the 40s, very impressive!
    you soon and good weekend!

At one point, a man and his large dog got on it as well and passed beside me. The bridge didn't any less secure with that extra weight/movement, which was certainly nice. Whoever built it really did a great job!

What a lovely place you found to shoot these pictures. I must admit, I am extremely uncomfortable on foot bridges, especially if the move!! I can never make up my mind about suspension bridges: torn between thinking "This is fun!" and "This cable might snap and I'll plummet to the depths below!" They do make a lovely backdrop for photos though ;)

I could see such being the case if perhaps they were quite rare in the culinary world, but alas (and thankfully!) there are tons of raspberry flavoured products, from ice creams to cookies to Jell-O to (raspberry) ginger ale, so that theory doesn't hold too much ground. Whatever the reason, I really do hope that fashion world gets wise to them on a greater scale one of these days and that this lovely, humble little fruit finally gets its proper moment in the sun, too.

    1. Sooo under represented and for no good reason, IMO. They're just as cute and fun as strawberries and cherries, which are quite easy to find in a fashion context, and yet, we so rarely encounter wearable raspberries. If I'm ever in a position to design a repro line, I'm definitely going to do my part to change that.

Thank you very much for your wonderfully nice compliments. I hope that you guys had a great weekend.

Big hugs & happy Monday wishes,
      ♥ Jessica

  35. I love your outfit, truly! The combination of the two reds is gorgeous, and the dress is heavenly! (Super-envy here.:-) )
I dislike suspension bridges like this one. Many, many years ago I once had to cross the Nanaimo suspension bridge (another one in BC), and I almost died, I felt so sick - I'm terribly afraid of heights, not on mountains, but on bridges, stairs, houses...

I hope you have a splendid June - here it was very rainy and cool so far.

    Warm regards from Switzerland, Doris

    1. Sweet Doris, from the bottom of my heart, I'm truly sorry that you had such a frightening, harrowing experience on a suspension bridge. I can only imagine how unpleasant and traumatic that must have been and thank the universe that you made it through that awful ordeal.

Many hugs & thanks for your lovely compliments on this outfit,
      ♥ Jessica

  36. What a gorgeous dress, I love the print. You're so clever with your colour combinations, the burgundy and coral are an unexpected but fabulous combination.
Tony's a braver man than Jon - he'd do most things for me but standing on a suspension bridge to take a photo would be a step too far, he's terrified of them. x

    1. That is such an awesome compliment, dear Vix - and all the more so coming from you, someone that I think has an amazing eye for colour as well. Thank you so much!

I get that for sure and in general, heights aren't my favourite thing either, but this bridge was wonderfully secure and I was able to to stand on it without feeling weak in the ol' knees (as was Tony).

Many hugs & joyful June wishes,

  37. Oh Jessica! You look divine! What a pretty dress! The whole ensemble is beautiful!

I like some bridges to look at, but often times am too spooked to go on them ... incase they collapse, hehe! Irrational, yes I know!

    1. Thank you very much, dear Melanie. This was a really fun outfit and an equally enjoyable location (which found on the fly; it wasn't planned out in advance at all).

I fully understand where you're coming from and don't think that's irrational at all. Bridges can collapse and even if such is very unlikely to happen to the one that you're on a given point in time, that doesn't take away from the reality that just being in that environment can cause.

      Many hugs coming your way,
      ♥ Jessica

  38. The scenery is breathtaking, but the bridge looks a bit scary. You're a brave lady Jessica! The dress is adorable and perfect for summer. Love that fruity print and the way you've creatively styled the whole outfit.

    1. Thank you so much, sweet Theresa. I adore this dress, too, and secretly hope that other garments were made, back in the day, in the same fabric and that I might chance upon one or more of them (say, like a blouse of skirt) in the course of my vintage hunting adventures.

Tons of hugs & happy June wishes,
      ♥ Jessica

  39. You look gorgeous, as always Jessica, and special props to Tony for these stunning photos. I love the perspective lines that the bridge creates and it must have been tricky on the bridge!

    1. Thank you very much, my sweet friend. This was certainly a unique and exciting shoot for both of us (and only the second or third time I'd ever been on a suspension bridge before anywhere). Tony really do a splendid job with the photos here. Shooting on a wobbly surface is not an easy task, and yet, he still managed to get stable shots. Such a pro!

Big hugs & joyful June wishes,

  40. What a beautiful dress. I am sure it is raspberries, since they are not dark enough to be blackberries. Both sorts grown wild in the forest, at least in Denmark. And I've never seen a raspberry patterned dress before either. It is always cherries and sometimes strawberries. So many lovely colours to play with, and you've done a great job as always accessorising it. And Tony's got a great job taking the photos. I've just come home from a large indoor flea market, only great thing I found was a pair of brand new red forties style shoes, and I really needed (!) a pair of red shoes. ;) Have a lovely day, dear. :)

    1. How exciting! I love a good flea market and sincerely wish that we had a lot more of them around these parts. Congratulations on your new pair of vintage style shoes. I've had a pair of red shoes for a few years now (basic court shoes/pumps) and honestly wear them as much as I do my black, brown and white pairs. I hope that these ones give you many years of happy, frequent wear, too.

Thank you for your lovely compliments. Tony really did nail it here under these unique shooting circumstances. I always truly appreciate (and make sure to tell him as much) his help in taking photos of me, but he earned extra Brownie points that day for sure. :)

Huge hugs & happy wishes for this week, my dear friend,

  41. I use to be terrified of suspension bridges... also for some reason they remind me of Indiana Jones and his saga of movies, which BTW I love.
Glad you found your raspberry dress, it is a beautiful and unusual print.

    1. They definitely channel Indy, I get that for sure. :)

Thank you very much, lovely Lorena. I'm super stoked about this find and am really, really curious now as to if this fabric was used on other garments, say like blouses or skirts, back in the day, too. If it was, I'd love to find a piece or two more in it (in my size), if possible. I'll definitely be keeping my eyes open for sure.

I hope that you're doing well and having a splendid week!

      Big hugs,

  42. Hello dear Jessica,

I just think this lovely dress is too adorable. You are adorable in it. I can see why it is a favorite of yours.

How nice that you and Tony get to enjoy that amazing scenery while working.

I am looking forward to reading about your upcoming summertime road trip adventure. Road trips are so exciting!

    1. Hi sweet Hope, what a beautiful treat to hear from you again. It really was a blast to get away for a homemade long weekend. Tony and I just had a big chat about our summer plans yesterday and it was decided, for various reasons, that it makes more sense to take one bigger trip than a couple of small ones (like this fun jaunt to the Kootenays) this summer and will most likely be doing so towards the end of the season. I'll definitely keep everyone here informed of our plans as they become more concrete. :)

Tons of hugs & joyful summertime wishes coming your way,
      ♥ Jessica

  43. The bridge must have been a fun location for photos and Tony has down a great job with these ones. Your outfit is lovely, all those colours are glorious together and the dress and hat are beauties. I've had rather a crazy week and a bit with my sister's wedding but I do plan on replying to your lovely email over this (much calmer) weekend!

    1. Hi sweet Kate, thank you for your lovely comment and compliments. My hat really goes off to Tony. This was not an easy environment to work in, let alone while hand holding a camera, but as usual, he nailed it - and we both had a lot of fun in the process. :)

How exciting that your sister tied the knot this weekend! I'm thrilled for her and her partner, as well as your whole family, and hope that the wedding went awesomely for all involved.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate that, though of course, do sincerely welcome you to take all the time you need. Weddings can be wonderful, but extremely draining events and I know that a bit of time is often needed to recharge one's batteries afterwards.

Wishing you a great rest of the weekend, my dear friend.

      Big hugs,
      ♥ Jessica
