25 fabulous vintage rose fashions and accessories for the sunny months

At the moment Morticia Addams would be very proud of me, for you see, the three tiny roses bushes that call our wee speck of a front yard home are currently bloom-less. They have imposing thorns and richly vibrant green leaves, but their heads have all been nibbled off by our local deer.

While I do adore seeing roses in front of our home, I'm not upset at these majestic creatures for turning our yard into a salad bar. They need to eat and I feel fortunate to be able to provide them with a snack.

I realize that this attitude is not shared by all those in our town - which has been absolutely teaming with wild deer for many years now - but I appreciate these beautiful animals and love that they feel comfortable to come so very close to our house (the roses flank our outside walls).

Still, I was looking forward to seeing some red and pink blooms this month, and so to get my springtime rose fix on, I thought it would be oodles of fun to round up some of the most eye-catching and enjoyable vintage rose related fashions and accessories that have crossed my path online lately and share them here with all of you.

Roses are, hands down, my favourite flower ever. Their timeless romance, powerful beauty, and sublime scent - coupled with their rich history - all combine to create a flower that speaks to my poetic heart and soul alike, while also making for a very frequent player in my yesteryear wardrobe.

Small or big, lifelike or more abstract, sweet or sensual, I cannot get enough of roses and know that many of you feel the same way about this classic flower (which grows in over 150 different species the world over), too.

Given that roses are really popping to life again in many parts of the world right now, this cheerful Sunday morning seemed like an ideal time to shine the spotlight on vintage - and a small number of lovely vintage reproduction/inspired – wearables featuring such.

Are you keen on rose themed fashions? Which of these beautiful vintage and vintage inspired offerings appeal to you the most?

I cannot remember a time when roses didn't speak to me. I gravitated towards them in gardens as a small child, watched them provide a gorgeously scented backdrop for much of my youth, carried a blood red verging on burgundy bouquet of them down the aisle, and have spent a lifetime cultivating quite a collection of roses for my home decor and closet alike. I know that these ageless flowers will always stir something strong and wonderful deep in my spirit and I love them all the more for that.

Fortunately, even if the deer get to your roses, too, or you otherwise do not have any around your own home, you can always bring a bevy of these magnificent blooms into your house via pieces like the vintage charmers featured in today's post.

Interestingly, I've found, even those who often say they aren't fans of floral prints/imagery, often have a soft spot for roses. They're intriguing, subtly mysterious, immensely pretty flowers that play a roll in many events throughout our lives.

It's hard not to adore them, and harder still to leave your wardrobe completely rose-less. And really, why would you want to when so many stunning wearable iterations of this classic flower have been created over the years?

  1. I have been so tempted by the last dress from Garb-Oh Vintage since I spotted it a couple of weeks ago but I'm worried it might look too girly on me. At my age I have to go careful with things like that. If only I could try it on first! Great selection. xx

    1. It really is devastatingly gorgeous, I completely agree. I own a lovely assortment of vintage skirts, including numerous genuine 50s ones, but do not yet have a single hand painted Mexican skirt. Finding a gem like that in my size and price range would be a long standing vintage fashion dream/goal come true (one day, I hope!).

Big hugs & joyful start of June wishes!

  6. A lovely array of rose bedecked items. The Mexican skirt is divine! I wonder if purple rose prints for 80's does 40's/50's were common, since the skirt in 15 has a very similar print to an 80's does 40's rayon dress my mom gave me (except the print is smaller and has paisley).

    Happy weekend wishes!

    1. You know, I think you could really be on to something there. I have a gorgeous 80s does 40s/50s rose print dress with a purple background that, colour palette wise, isn't that dissimilar to that skirt (which, as a side note, has sold in the days since this post went live). What a cool observation, dear Inky. Thank you for sharing it - I will definitely be looking for more 80s purple rose garments now. :)

  10. I definitely think roses are a very elegant flower. They aren't my all time favorite (Daffodils steal the day), but they are very beautiful flowers, and as such are rightfully depicted in many ways in fashion, jewelry, and home décor.

    1. While that would be sort of cool in a way, because it would mean I was that close to a deer, it's probably better if they don't get a taste for vintage cotton. My closet could be in serious danger if they did! :D

I know just the type of pattern that you mean and really like them as well. Abstracts florals hit their sophisticated zenith in the 50s and early 60s and remain some of the most memorable patterns of that era to this day.

  15. I love roses, but sadly my own rose bushes are not looking to happy at the moment, I think they caught a disease but I am hoping they will bounce back. I have always liked the rather bold print rose floral patterns have. My favorites are the less traditional rose colors, like yellow or blue!

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh no, the poor things! Our three little bushes are the only plants, save for a tree (that was there long before we moved in) that we planted in our front yard, as it's super tiny and has almost no room to grow things on. Luckily we could squeeze in these tiny bushes though. All that to say, I don't have a lot of gardening experience at all (I didn't have gardens at the previous houses I've lived at as an adult either), so I can't even venture a guess as to what might have befallen your roses. Fingers crossed that they do indeed bounce back for you.

That's really cool! I've always loved uniquely hued roses, too, very much including both peach and purple.

Many hugs & happy start of June wishes,

  16. I think I like #11 the most, which is very fitting, since 11 is my lucky number. I'm also a big fan of the hair flowers which were popular in the 1940s, particularly among teenage girls who didn't want to wear more adult hats yet.

    1. Hair flowers are marvelous accessories for sure. I wouldn't say I've worn a ton of them in recent years, but I have a nice sized collection and find that no matter what, they get the most wardrobe play for me during the very season (summer) that we're heading into soon.

Big hugs & many thanks for your lovely comment,

I definitely love this flower too and you've picked out some lovely pieces. I love those shoes! It's a shame that buying shoes online is always such a risk for me because I'd probably find my narrow feet have their pick of vintage styles! x

    1. You are seriously lucky to have narrow feet. Mine are this weird width that falls between regular and wide - like if there was a quarter size between the two, I think that would be my ideal. 24. Jessica this is exactly why I don't grow anything at all in our garden, spacious as it is, it is also unfortunately the stomping ground for a fairly large family of deer. 25. Ooh, deer! ;) How can you not love roses!? They are classic and beautiful and come in so many colours. In fact I've just got three pots for free. Our best friend knows one who makes them and gave them to us a gift. One of them is a red climbing one. I adore the rose printed scarf, and if it wasn't that I've just ordered from your Etsy shop, I would buy it on the spot. I've also sent you a mail with photos of our green house. Thank you for making this delightful and charming list, dear. Have a lovely day. I am home alone (again) and will go out to knit. :)

    1. Roses really are a magnificent flower. They can be sweet, supportive (as in, given during difficult times), sophisticated, and seductive, just depending on their colour and context, and I really couldn't love them more than I do.

Congratulations on receiving three rose plants for free. Gardeners are such giving folks. I often go to local yard sales and see people giving away or putting super low prices on clippings, seeds, shoots, etc from their own gardens.

Thank you very much for your fantastic, photo filled email, my beautiful friend. I really look forward to replying to it soon.

Enjoy your peaceful day of knitting and having the house to yourself.

  26. You're right: it is impossible not to love the roses .. I deal (and I hope not to do too much damage) of my grandmother's rose, since she is no longer there ... Each bud is a great satisfaction for me .. in my garden there are red roses, light pink and yellow .. the yellow have the sunset shades, maybe they are my favorites, but the red ones are velvet petals and pink ones, grow up and represent the essence of beauty. . I'm rambling, I'm sorry! That your post is full of beauty, good taste and ... temptations! Black skirt with big red rose has a Gothic charm that I love so much, the long pink dress is so delicate and romantic ... Your every choice is really original and pleasant, it is diffcult to choose from! In my closet there are two dresses with this divine flower: Both blacks with red roses ..
      a big, warm hug

    1. So true! In a strange way, they almost seem like imitation roses, as they lack the heady, alluring scent of (many) grown outdoors.

I hear you there, I want the dress that wrapped up this post soooo much, but can't even consider it right now. Why must the basics of life cost so much these days - doesn't the universe know that we have vintage to buy! ;D

Big hugs & happy first week of June wishes,
      ♥ Jessica

  28. I'm so sorry the deer got your roses! As much as I love deer, I don't think I could be as understanding as you are with having to live without roses in the coming months!
This is a lovely round-up of items, and that hat, #2, is simply lovely. There is just something so fabulous about wearing an explosion of flowers on your head :)

    1. Hi sweet gal, thankfully there are many beautiful bushes around town, as well as an actual dedicated public rose garden (down near one of our town's two large lakes), so I don't have to go far to encounter other roses that the deer haven't gotten to yet. I'd certainly miss mine much more if I didn't have as much though.

Big hugs & happy start of June wishes,
      ♥ Jessica

  29. How can we be mad at adorable animals for eating our flowers? I'll admit that cuteness sways me, and I'll be furious at slugs and not even annoyed if it's a wallaby or something sweet! I would forgive deer too :)

I used to not be keen on roses when I was young, and resisted girly things, but I think they are classy and elegant now! How we change :)

    1. Don't we though? I think it's a magnificent thing that our tastes continue to evolve over the course of our lives and really, personally, adore seeing what will catch my eye next that I might not have been drawn to (at least to the same degree) previously.

Many hugs & joyful wishes for June,

  30. Every time I have to de-head the over-bloomed beauties, I struggle.
    Jessica,
There's another reason why my invitation to have you as my guest stands open. I have (and you've seen them on Instagram) vintage roses, their flowers are as big as an average salad-head :D Being an old variety, they do tend to grow tall, with strong stems. On the other hand, I have two PINK bush roses, as wild as a bush can be! They are rampant, they bloom madly, and it break me into tears (ever time) when I have to cut HUNDREDS of flowers in one go - since they are SO OLD, they fall into that "blooming twice a year in a large burst" category.
    Everything rose-related is divine.
    Thank you for sharing these.

    1. You are so very lucky to have huge, gorgeous vintage style cabbage roses in your garden. Their loveliness - and scent - is beyond compare in the rose world and really does feel like a tangible piece of the past that we're able to continue to cultivate to this very day. Should I ever have the great pleasure of visiting you, it would certainly be all the more of a treat to do so when your garden is in bloom and the mere thought of such brings me no shortage of joy.

Many hugs & joyful wishes for a great June,
      ♥ Jessica

    1. How exciting! I'm a big fan of tropical prints! We get some seriously hot weather (upwards of 40C is not uncommon at all) here during the thick of the summer months and Hawaii worthy florals seem super at home when such is the case. I hope you get a lot of wear out of your beautiful new frocks, dear Melanie.

Tons of hugs & sincere thanks for all of your awesome comments today,

  32. I am sad for your roses but I do think it is marvellous that you get deer so close to your house. I hope that you get to watch them. Great selection of rose related items. I do like a rose print and am particularly partial to 1950's blue rose prints. I love the smell of roses too, in fact, my mum just gave me a rose and peony scented soap and it is divine!

    1. Thank you sweetly, my dear friend. Excitingly, this weekend I saw two blooms on the red rose bush closest to our front steps, so there's a chance that if the deer don't come by for round two, we might get some blooms this month on that bust at least. I haven't actually seen them that close, but have spotted them only a few feet further away and it truly is a majestic sight to behold.

Same here! The smell of roses is so incredibly lovely. I just bought a small (glass jar type) rose candle a couple of weeks ago to burn throughout the summer for an extra hit of that classic scent.

Many hugs & happy Tuesday wishes,
      ♥ Jessica

    1. Over the years (and especially since becoming a fashion blogger), I've noticed that folks tend to either have tons of floral print/themed items (that's the camp I fall into) or very few. It's quite interesting! Are you a fan of them in general, my lovely friend?

      Oodles of hugs,

    1. I'm delighted to hear that, honey, thank you - and, now a couple of weeks later, I can report that one of our rose bushes has managed to grow a couple of red blooms, so I'm not quite as rose-less as things were looking in late May.

Many hugs & happy mid-June wishes,
      ♥ Jessica
