My July 2015 vintage thrift haul!!!

As I've said many times here before, and is the case for a lot of folks around the world these days, the vintage thrift scene around these parts has been pretty darn slim for the last several years. It's not uncommon for me to many months or longer, if we take super basic costume jewelry and home decor pieces out of the picture, between when I find vintage items - let alone ones for myself. As such, I haven't had a post like this up here in an age and half!

Last month however, the thrifting gods smiled on me and I found several fabulous vintage - and one vintage appropriate - item for myself, all of which I highlight in this new YouTube video (below) that I made really recently.

I've been trying to thrift a lot lately, when possible, and while the end of July yielded fewer pieces than the start, if things continue to go in my favour on the thrifting front in August and/or September, hopefully I can bring you another video with lots more cool finds down the road in a few more weeks.

♥ ♥ ♥

It's truly awesome to be filming again! I've shared two more videos between my "I'm back" one and this thrifting haul, which are 25 random fun facts about myself and a Vintage related, cookbook, and crafting book haul, respectively, so please be sure to check out both of those videos,  too, if you haven't done so already.

Thanks so much for watching this new video, dolls and gents, and again for all of support and encourage regarding my return to YouTube this summer.

Have an awesome Tuesday everyone!!!

  1. Love this type of video, so great to see you had some great thrift store luck last month! I am hoping once the stores here start bringing out the Halloween items in a few weeks I am able to pick up some gems, the past few months have been slim pickings for me.

    1. It's interesting, you know, we have so little vintage around here, that unlike many folks in other parts of the world, I rarely find any more (or less) vintage during the Halloween costume season, but I do always make a point to look for it and to "rescue" any pieces that I can from potentially being altered and even wrecked in the name of All Hallow's Eve. Fingers crossed that you have lots of luck this fall!

Big hugs & many thanks for being the first to comment on today's post,

  2. Great haul! I got a couple of vintage purses lately and a few vintage Pyrex pieces.

    1. That's awesome!!! Pyrex is so much easier (relatively speaking, of course) to find in the States (like scores of other vintage items) when thrifting or, in some cases, even in a retail setting. It's fantastic that you found not just one, but a few pieces and two new vintage purses to boot. Way to go!!!

    1. Oh no, I'm very sorry to hear that. Thank you for letting me know. So long as one the capability to play videos on their computer, it should work for you, I believe. I certainly haven't put any country restrictions on it or anything of that nature on my videos. Did you try clicking through and seeing if it would play for you on YouTube itself? Please keep me in the loop - I would hate to think that you weren't able to see them for some reason, if you wanted to do so.

      Many thanks,
      ♥ Jessica

    1. Hi Suzanne, thank you very much for your wonderfully nice comment and compliment. It truly warmed my Canadian heart to read those words.

Many happy congrats on your own recent thrifting finds. I was out today and did a bit of thrifting amongst running many errands and found one charming 50s figurine, which is the start of my next "haul pile" for whenever I've amassed enough pieces for the next video of this fun nature.

Many thanks again & have a beautiful week!

  5. All so sweet, I really love these good finds! I love dolphins as well, and bunnies, and that cute little bunny is soooo sweet! Brooches are also always on my list :) and it is so good that you got a beautiful brooch! The white belt is also nice, lost in common, because I also love belts :) And a rainbow skirt, but I thought you needed to tighten it a bit, till I hear it's a wrap skirt! That skirt is really my favorite piece and the bunny, too! Hope you go on showing us your great finds! You look lovely, by the way!

    1. You always leave such cheerful, absolutely lovely comments, dear Denise, and this one was certainly no exception. Thank you very much! Isn't that bunny just darling? I really hope that Tony likes it!

I sincerely appreciate you touching on my outfit here - thank you! With Tony gone this summer, and thus no new outfit photos taking place until his returns (the ones I've been posting in recent weeks were all taken before he left), I've been using Instagram and now (also) YouTube as a way to share new (as in, never posted before) outfits with my lovely readers/followers.

Huge thanks again - your comment was a really bright spot in my day.

      Big hugs,

Can't wait to see your new video! I haven't had as much time this year to thrift, *sad eyes*, but fall is coming and hopefully festival season will bring lots of treasures. One distinct advantage of going through and organizing all the junk I have put away is to find Lots.Of.Yummy.Junk. right here, already! However, there is always room for more...
    Off to YouTube,
    Take care , Jessica :)

    1. So true, there's always room for more treasures, especially if one periodically does a good purge of their existing ones. I don't like clutter, so that's a must for me (and Tony, who could happily live in a minimalist style home - not me, but I can appreciate the serene simplicity of it for sure).

Fingers crossed that the thrifting powers that be smile on your in the second half of summer and far beyond.

      Have a fantastic week!

It is pretty hefty indeed and I'm really looking forward to pouring over it, likely in the chillier months when the foul weather conditions suits evening spent at home with a cat on your lap and a great book in your hands so superbly well.

i gasped with delight the moment you showed the book - not for the book itself but for the amazing color-combination that appeared! the russian headscarf, the purple blouse, green brooch, yellow bangle and blue nails sang with the bright blue book - did you plan this??

    1. You have such a great eye, dear Beate! The outfit was planned entirely to colour coordinate (though the blue nails were from what I'd been wearing the day before, if memory serves me right), but the fact that it worked well with the cover of that book was simply a fun happenstance and I loved that you picked up on it (I did as well when I watched the video after it was filmed).

I hope that you're able to find a similar jacket that works well on you. They're not easy to unearth in the slightest and given their common use in the 40s, you'd think that some of the repro companies might jump on producing them. Hell Bunny did put out a small line of more letter man style jackets not too long ago, but nothing even close to the more traditional leather bomber (from them, I mean). That's another example of a true vintage garment that we don't see the brands you'd expect to be making such items actually doing as much.

Thank you for your wonderfully nice comment and for your support of my videos. It means so much to me!

      Huge hugs,

  9. Such lovely finds and how cute is the bunny! I look forward to seeing these pieces popping up in your posts.

I have barely any luck in charity shops here in town, the last time was when we found Andy some bits last summer, but we have vintage clothes shops here so that may be why xxx

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Melanie. I'm really looking forward to sharing them here in outfit posts, too - especially that 1940s style brown bomber jacket. It's my favourite jacket (not blazer or coat) in my whole wardrobe now and hands down one of my faves that I've ever owned. It was, even more than the grey suit jacket, my very favourite thrifted find of July (and the whole year to date, come to think of it).

Big hugs & happy Wednesday wishes,

    1. It's awesome that you're still able to find vintage books fairly easily were you live. I find more of them than pre-60s clothing still, too, but I wouldn't call it an abundance by any means. It's one of the first aisles I always check though. I have a particular fondness for vintage cookbooks/recipe booklets and delight in unearthing those. It's been a while now since that last happened though, come to think of it. If anything, I have more luck in that particular camp at yard sales, but their vintage offerings have been abysmal so far this summer here (last year was the same and 2013 wasn't much better). I hope that you score lots more great vintage reads as the year continues.

      Big hugs,

  11. I love posts like this particularly because I'm always curious about how thrifting is in other places. Here, too, it is hard to find genuine vintage clothing on the rack of my Salvation Army or Goodwill, so I am absolutely impressed (and a little smitten) with that embellished jacket you found and, though it is not vintage, I cannot wait to see how you style that bomber jacket.
I have to say, the best thrifting experience I've ever had was in a Value Village in Toronto, back before vintage got really popular (and expensive)-- what I wouldn't give to go back and buy up everything I found that day.

Also, it is so wonderful seeing you in these videos! It's great to hear your voice and really get a sense of your personality!

    1. That sounds like an amazing thrifting day! By the time I lived in Toronto (2006 - 2012), sites like eBay and Etsy were going strong, which coupled with all the vintage shops/flea market sellers/pro pickers there, left next to nothing pre-60s (and often even pre-90s) on the thrift store shelves. I would love have loved to have experienced the vintage thrift scene in that bustling city before it virtually vanished. I did, to a certain degree, get that when I lived in Calgary for a couple of years in my late teens, but not epicly so even back then (the popularity and collectibility of vintage was already very much on the rise in those years).

Thank you for sharing your fun memory with me and for your lovely comment. I'm chomping at the bit to share these pieces in some new outfit posts once Tony gets back and in the future in general. The bomber jacket in particular, which is my favourite thrifted find so far of this year, is a piece I can't wait to sport on camera.

Have a stellar week, lovely lady!

  12. You're on fire with your videos, Jessica! In fact, so much so I'm utterly failing to keep up right now - I don't have much opportunity to watch videos through the working week... I just about watched one on the train home around patchy Internet connection via this post, only to realise it wasn't the video you'd featured here specifically - I had no idea what the above comments were on about! I watched the one about your book haul instead - which is fine as I love books ;) you picked up some beauties - I was intrigued by the card making one but also know I'd never find the time to do any of it! I also buy recipe books even if I know I won't make everything in them - sometimes they're just too beautiful to resist :D xx

    1. Thank you very much, dearest CiCi! I think it's a combination of the absolute rush of getting back into making videos again coupled with a strong element of "making hay when the sun shines", so to speak. By that I mean, filming when I get a day where I'm feeling well enough on the health front to do so, and I'm been very fortunate to have a few of those lately. Yesterday would have been another, but I needed to run a ton of errands and go grocery shopping. It was dark by the time I got home, so a new video didn't happen, but hopefully I can make one or two this weekend and get them up for the mid to later part of August.

I'm really touched that you watched my book haul video and by all of your support of my YouTube channel. Thank you deeply! It is super hard to find time to craft (a point that never sits right with me, as crafting is so near and dear to my heart), so I hear you there big time. So true about cookbooks - I'm the very same way (ditto for crafting books). The gorgeous, enjoyable food photography alone in a lot of them these days makes them worth buying.

Tons of hugs & happy Wednesday wishes,
      ♥ Jessica

    1. Thank you very much, sweet gal! I can hardly wait to feature it in an outfit post come the chilly days of fall/winter. It's grey colour and warm wool make it the ideal mid-century blazer for the cooler months (especially since I all but live in a consistent colour palette of red/grey/black all winter long! :)).

    1. Thank you very much, sweet Linda. I'm thrilled to be making videos again and love that, by pure coincidence, I had the very best thrifting month I've encountered in ages in the very same month of July. August has been slower on the thrifting front so far, but there's still more than 2/3rd of it left and I remain optimistic. :)

  20. You are the cutest in these videos! I felt like rushing over and hugging you. :) I love the last 7 dollar jacket, very elegant. I imagine you wearing it over your dress on every winter and Christmas party. And I have an idea for the etiquette book: How about making a top ten revival of good manners (or something like that). I am thinking about emphasizing manners that are lost in modern times and which you want to remind us all about. Just an idea. And I noticed your blue nails that matched your blouse perfectly. XOXO from Denmark :)
